Photovoltaic power-system options for the manned space construction base

The function of the proposed manned Space Construction Base (SCB) is to provide a permanent manned orbital facility for the construction and operation of a variety of space experiments, ranging from a space-processing development to on-orbit-constructed microwave radiometers and antennas. A typical SCB system might reach initial operational capability in low earth orbit in 1985, have a 10-year mission duration, and have an initial power requirement of 50 kWe. A summary of the requirements imposed by the SCB on the electrical power system (EPS) is presented in a table. Attention is given to EPS options, baseline power platform system operations, an energy storage system evaluation, advanced-technology NiCd batteries and lifetime, and orbital buildup operations.

Low cost silicon solar array project: Feasibility of low-cost, high-volume production of silane and pyrolysis of silane to semiconductor-grade silicon

Silicon epitaxy analysis of silane produced in the Process Development Unit operating in a completely integrated mode consuming only hydrogen and metallurgical silicon resulted in film resistivities of up to 120 ohms cm N type. Preliminary kinetic studies of dichlorosilane disproportionation in the liquid phase have shown that 11.59% SiH4 is formed at equilibrium after 12 minutes contact time at 56 C. The fluid-bed reactor was operated continuously for 48 hours with a mixture of one percent silane in helium as the fluidizing gas. A high silane pyrolysis efficiency was obtained without the generation of excessive fines. Gas flow conditions near the base of the reactor were unfavorable for maintaining a bubbling bed with good heat transfer characteristics. Consequently, a porous agglomerate formed in the lower portion of the reactor. Dense coherent plating was obtained on the silicon seed particles which had remained fluidizied throughout the experiment.

Quality assurance of PMR-15

Controls on the PMR-15 resin and/or prepreg were established to ensure a solid base for the subsequent process development task. The effort was divided into subtasks which included evaluation of commercially available graphite/PMR-15 polyimide prepregs, detailed evaluation of materials and selection of chemical test procedures. During the initial phase of the program a variability problem was detected in the PMR-15 resin. The manufacturing and/or storage of the PMR-15 resin/esters was identified as the chief cause for the variability.

Material characteristics of Space Shuttle reinforced carbon-carbon

Reinforced carbon-carbon with an oxidation-resistant coating is used as the thermal protection system for the Space Shuttle Orbiter high-temperature wing leading edge and nose cap surfaces. The reinforced carbon-carbon system is capable of multimission reuse, and, in addition, provides a smooth external moldline while transmitting aerodynamic loads to the fuselage forward bulkhead and wing spar through mechanical attachments. This paper describes the material and processes developed, strength and thermal/physical properties which characterize performance.

Diffusion bonded boron/aluminum spar-shell fan blade

Design and process development tasks intended to demonstrate composite blade application in large high by-pass ratio turbofan engines are described. Studies on a 3.0 aspect radio space and shell construction fan blade indicate a potential weight savings for a first stage fan rotor of 39% when a hollow titanium spar is employed. An alternate design which featured substantial blade internal volume filled with titanium honeycomb inserts achieved a 14% potential weight savings over the B/M rotor system. This second configuration requires a smaller development effort and entails less risk to translate a design into a successful product. The feasibility of metal joining large subsonic spar and shell fan blades was demonstrated. Initial aluminum alloy screening indicates a distinct preference for AA6061 aluminum alloy for use as a joint material. The simulated airfoil pressings established the necessity of rigid air surfaces when joining materials of different compressive rigidities. The two aluminum alloy matrix choices both were successfully formed into blade shells.

Silicon material task - Low cost solar array project /JPL/DOE/

The paper describes the silicon material task of the low-cost solar array project, which has the objective of establishing a silicon production capability equivalent to 500 mW per year at a price less than 10 dollars/kg (1975 dollars) in 1986. The task program is divided into four phases: technical feasibility, scale-up studies (the present phase), experimental process system development units, and implementation of large-scale production plants, and it involves the development of processes for two groups of materials, that is, semiconductor grade and solar cell grade. In addition, the effects of impurities on solar cell performance are being investigated. Attention is given to problem areas of the task program, such as environmental protection, material compatibility between the reacting chemicals and materials of construction of the equipment, and waste disposal.

Gas Diffusion in Fluids Containing Bubbles

Mathematical model describes movement of gases in fluid containing many bubbles. Model makes it possible to predict growth and shrink age of bubbles as function of time. New model overcomes complexities involved in analysis of varying conditions by making two simplifying assumptions. It treats bubbles as point sources, and it employs approximate expression for gas concentration gradient at liquid/bubble interface. In particular, it is expected to help in developing processes for production of high-quality optical glasses in space.

Carbon fiber production at low temperatures from polyacrylonitrile

Recent safety considerations have sought to lower the electrical conductivity of carbon fibers. Carbon fibers produced from polyacrylonitrile at low carbonization temperatures (600-900 C) possess low electrical conductivity but do not possess adequate strength. Low-temperature processes are described which improve fiber strength but do not increase electrical conductivity substantially. The processes result in a carbon fiber with nearly twice the tensile strength compared to the old process. Process development and its effect on fiber properties are reported.

The challenges of manufacturing graphite-epoxy structural columns for space platforms

A description is given of the manufacturing processes developed for large-quantity production of space structure graphite/epoxy composite tubes. The tubes are to be delivered to orbit by the Space Shuttle and assembled by astronaut-assisted assembly machines. The tooling and manufacturing system uses a novel method of dry fiber placement which carefully controls fiber position and orientation and a non-autoclave cure for the epoxy resin. The means of dimensional tolerance control over differential thermal expansion between metal tooling and graphite tubes, resin shrinkage during cure, hot pressurized resins in close tolerance tooling, and tool wear, are examined in detail. A successful pilot production program is also reported.

Charging control techniques

Transparent conductive thin films of indium oxide and indium-tin oxide were evaluated for their properties to control charge buildup on satellite materials. Both oxide coatings were evaluated for their uniformity, stability, reproducibility and characteristics on various substrate materials such as FEP Teflon, Kapton, and glass. The process development toward optimization and characterization of these thin semiconductor oxide coatings and the evaluation on large sizes performed for qualification for use on thermal control satellite materials is described. The materials have been characterized in multiple energy electron plasma environment and at low temperatures. All radiation measurements of the coatings under simulated substorm conditions have exhibited the characteristics of stable charge control. Measurement of surface potential during and after irradiation by electrons up to 30 KeV and ionizing gamma radiation show an effective stable grounding surface.

Study of phenomena related to the sintering process of silicon nitride at atmospheric pressure

A procedure was perfected for the production of components used in engineering applications of silicon nitride. Particles of complex geometry that combine remarkable mechanical properties with a high density are obtained. The process developed, in contrast to the "hot pressing" method, does not use external pressures, and in contrast to the reaction bonding method, final densities close to the theoretical value are obtained.

Relations between information system engineering and software engineering

This paper examines some of the relations between information system engineering and software engineering. A model for the development process of an information system is presented that focuses on problems common to both disciplines. The concepts of complexity, multiplicity of view, distortion in communication, and concurrency and iteration in implementation are treated. A set of design constructs for the description of an information system is presented. The role of project management is treated. The issue of how to characterize requirements analysis is answered by making it a design activity from the point of view of a user of the product system.
