NASA/FRC wake turbulence flight test program: Ride quality aspects

To determine how much the ride quality of the Shuttle Carrier (Boeing 747) Aircraft is affected at various spoiler settings, the PEMS II (Portable Environmental Measuring System) was used to measure onboard motion during a test flight October 15, 1975. The PEMS II measures acceleration in the vertical, transverse and longitudinal directions as well as angular rates of pitch, roll, and yaw. The data acquired by this instrument, combined with an airline passenger comfort model, gives an indication of how passengers would react to the motion induced by flying in a vortex alleviation configuration.

Calibration source for remote sensors

The source described was developed as a calibration target for the multispectral scanner (MSS) which was flown on the Earth Resources Technology Satellite A (LANDSAT 1). The wavelength region of interest covered the four (4) MSS bands extending from 0.5 to 1.1 micrometers, although the target was calibrated from 0.32 to 2.5 micrometers. The following characteristics for the target were required: (1) large aperture, sufficient to accommodate an instrument with a 9 inch (23 centimeters(cm)) aperture and 2 1/2 deg field of view (fov), (2) highly diffuse energy from target, (3) high spatial uniformity across aperture area of source, (4) spectrally calibrated in absolute units, (5) stable output over long periods of time (1-2 yrs), and (6) rugged, yet portable enough to be easily transported long distances without detrimental effects on the operational capabilities of the target. Two approaches were considered: a thirty (30) inch (76 cm) diameter integrating sphere with a twelve inch (30.5 cm) exit port, or the use of one hemisphere of a 76 cm sphere in conjunction with a Kodak ektolite screen. The screen has the property of reflecting back uniformly into a well defined area the majority of the light received. After some preliminary trials it seemed that the 76 cm sphere would give the most satisfactory results.

A multichannel physiological data/voice telemetry system

A seven channel physiological telemetry system was designed, constructed, and tested for a space environment to transfer physiological and voice information to and from an astronaut. Three ECG leads were monitored simultaneously, and two-way voice communication was achieved. The portable unit operated properly under ground based station (GBS) control. The major design problem was associated with the constraints of a wide bandwidth FM transmitter with crystal control combined with the tri-state logic format used. However, by using an ''indirect FM'' scheme and incorporating additional waveshaping circuits at the GBS, proper operation of the system was obtained. In the present form, the telemetry system has capability for seven channels of low level (2.5 mv peak maximum) physiological signals with bandwidths between 0.03 Hz and 100 Hz. Additional signal conditioning and modification of the instrumentation amplifier gains are required for other signals.

Engineering studies of vectorcardiographs in blood pressure measuring systems, appendix 1

A small, portable, relatively inexpensive computer system was developed for on-line use in clinical or laboratory situations. The system features an integrated hardware-software package that permits use of all peripherals, such as analog-to-digital converter, oscilloscope, plotter, digital bus, with an interpreter constructed around the BASIC programming language. The system is conceptually similar to the LINC system developed in 1962, but is more compact and powerful due to intervening advances in integrated circuit technology. A description of the hardware of the system was given. A reference manual, user manual, and programming guides were also presented. Finally, a stereo display system for vectorcardiograms was described.

Zinc depolarized electrochemical CO2 concentration

Two zinc depolarized electrochemical carbon dioxide concentrator concepts were analytically and experimentally evaluated for portable life support system carbon dioxide (CO2) removal application. The first concept, referred to as the zinc hydrogen generator electrochemical depolarized CO2 concentrator, uses a ZHG to generate hydrogen for direct use in an EDC. The second concept, referred to as the zinc/electrochemical depolarized concentrator, uses a standard EDC cell construction modified for use with the Zn anode. The Zn anode is consumed and subsequently regenerated, thereby eliminating the need to supply H2 to the EDC for the CO2 removal process. The evaluation was based primarily on an analytical evaluation of the two ZnDCs at projected end item performance and hardware design levels. Both ZnDC concepts for PLSS CO2 removal application were found to be noncompetitive in both total equivalent launch weight and individual extravehicular activity mission volume when compared to other candidate regenerable PLSS CO2 scrubbers.

Applications of chemiluminescence to bacterial analysis

Luminol chemiluminescence method for detecting bacteria was based on microbial activation of the oxidation of the luminol monoanion by hydrogen peroxide. Elimination of the prior lysing step, previously used in the chemiluminescence technique, was shown to improve considerably the reproducibility and accuracy of the method in addition to simplifying it. An inexpensive, portable photomultiplier detector was used to measure the maximum light intensity produced when the sample is added to the reagent. Studies of cooling tower water show that the luminol chemiluminescence technique can be used to monitor changes in viable cell population both under normal conditions and during chlorine treatment. Good correlation between chemiluminescence and plate counts was also obtained in the analysis of process water used in paper mills. This method showed good potential for monitoring the viable bacteria populations in activated sludge used in waste treatment plants to digest organic matter.

An interactive graphics package for the automatic node renumbering of finite element matrices

An interactive graphics software package which allows users to display the non-zero structure of large sparse symmetric materials was described and methods used to implement it as a portable FORTRAN callable subroutine were summarized. In particular, the system permits the display of the resulting matrix after reordering the rows and columns, with the reordering scheme either defined by the user or automatically generated by the program with the aim of reducing matrix bandwidth and profile. Although the primary application of the package has been to the finite element analysis of structures, it is equally well suited to the many other areas of engineering and science which use sparse matrices.

Vibration detection of component health and operability

In order to prevent catastrophic failure and eliminate unnecessary periodic maintenance in the shuttle orbiter program environmental control system components, some means of detecting incipient failure in these components is required. The utilization was investigated of vibrational/acoustic phenomena as one of the principal physical parameters on which to base the design of this instrumentation. Baseline vibration/acoustic data was collected from three aircraft type fans and two aircraft type pumps over a frequency range from a few hertz to greater than 3000 kHz. The baseline data included spectrum analysis of the baseband vibration signal, spectrum analysis of the detected high frequency bandpass acoustic signal, and amplitude distribution of the high frequency bandpass acoustic signal. A total of eight bearing defects and two unbalancings was introduced into the five test items. All defects were detected by at least one of a set of vibration/acoustic parameters with a margin of at least 2:1 over the worst case baseline. The design of a portable instrument using this set of vibration/acoustic parameters for detecting incipient failures in environmental control system components is described.

Automated electroencephalography system and electroencephalographic coordinates of space motion sickness, part 1

A self-contained and portable device which permits clinical electroencephalography (EEG) to be conducted in remote locations by minimally trained, nontechnical personnel was developed and tested. The unit accomplishes semiautomatic acquisition of EEG data from the patient, simultaneous transmission of eight data channels to a central hospital facility over conventional telephone equipment, and automatic printing (at the remote site) of the EEG report generated at the central location. Consequently, this system enables the delivery of high-quality EEG diagnostic services in a geographically remote site with the accuracy and speed formerly possible only in certain large medical centers. Beside obvious potential clinical applications, this system serves as an initial prototype of a unit which could provide inflight EEG during future space missions.
