Irregular structure of thermal ion plasma near the plasmapause observed from Ogo 3 and Pc 1 measurements.

Independent measurements of the plasmapause and associated thermal plasma structure from Ogo 3 are compared with ground-based Pc 1 observations from the period 1966-67. Substantial agreement between the plasmapause crossing identified on the satellite and the Pc 1 occurrence positions observed on the ground at midlatitudes during the nighttime (including dawn and dusk) indicates that these nighttime Pc 1 events are closely associated with the plasmapause. A correlation of selected closely spaced events obtained in the nighttime under quiet to moderate activity provides good agreement in the proton concentrations near the plasmapause boundary. Preliminary results indicate Pc 1 excitation is associated with plasma irregularities near the plasmapause and is particularly favorable in the region of 'post-storm recovery' and in the region of diurnal 'plasma bulge' in the afternoon-dusk sector.

Fluid inclusions in quartz crystals from South-West Africa.

Quartz crystals from calcite veins of unknown age in Precambrian metasedimentary rocks at Geiaus No. 6 and Aukam farms in South-West Africa contain both primary and secondary inclusions filled with one substance or a combination of substances. These substances include organic liquid, moderately saline aqueous liquid, dark-colored solid, and a vapor. Analysis of these materials by microscopy and by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry shows the presence of constituents of both low and high molecular weights.

Transportable lunar-ranging system.

Description of a transportable transmitting unit for measuring distances to retroreflectors on the moon. The unit can be installed at any astronomical observatory where a large telescope is available to detect the received signal. The transmitter consists of a high radiance, frequency-doubled neodymium-glass laser and a coude optical system of moderate size. The measurements may eventually be used to study variations in the length of the earth's day, changes in the geographic location of the pole, and the drifting of the continents.

Action of acetylstrophanthidin on experimental myocardial infarction.

An experimental animal model with acute myocardial infarction of a size insufficient to produce profound heart failure or shock was used to study the effects of acute infarction on digitalis tolerance and the hemodynamic changes produced by moderate and large doses of acetylstrophanthidin. With acute myocardial infarction, digitalis toxic arrhythmias could be precipitated with significantly lower doses of digitalis than in animals without myocardial infarction. There was no precise correlation between the size of infarction and the toxic dose of glycoside. Coronary artery ligation produced a stable but relatively depressed circulatory state, as evidenced by lowered cardiac output and stroke volume and elevated systemic vascular resistance and left atrial mean pressure. When digitalis was infused, the following significant changes were observed at nontoxic doses: (1) elevation of aortic and left ventricular pressures; (2) further decline in cardiac output; and (3) decreased left atrial mean pressure.

Evidence for the negative work function associated with positrons in gold.

Observation that positrons which have been thermalized in various moderators and coated with approximately 200-A gold leave the gold surface with an energy which peaks between 0.75 and 2.90 eV. This energy is thought to be associated with a positron or 'negative' work function of gold.

On the remote sensing of mesoscale tropical convection intensity from a geostationary satellite.

This paper develops an objective technique for estimating the mass and energy exchange in convection systems corresponding to altocumulus cumulogenitus and cumulonimbus intensities using measurements of the area change of the cirrus outflow on a sequence of satellite cloud photographs obtained at geostationary altitude. The data clearly show that: (1) the technique is able to isolate vigorous and moderate convection regimes on the geostationary satellite cloud photos; and (2) the model-estimated mass and energy are consistent with ground-based measurements such as those of Braham and Brown.

Vibration characteristics of unidirectional filamentary composite material panels.

An experimental and analytical study of the vibration characteristics of a series of boron/epoxy composite panels with all layers having the same filament orientation has been conducted. Nodal patterns and natural frequencies are found to be highly dependent on the filament angle. Frequencies change by as much as 90 per cent with a 30-deg change in the filament angle. Measured damping coefficients are only moderately higher than those of comparative aluminum panels. There is no strong correlation between the filament angle and the amount of damping. In general, calculations based on a finite element mathematical model are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Chromian spinels from Apollo 14 rocks.

Results of electron microprobe analysis of 13 pink, isotropic, high-relief grains from Apollo 14 elastic rock 14063,14 and a lithic fragment from the 1 to 2 mm fines, 14002,7, identifying them as spinel minerals dominated by the spinel component MgAl2O4 associated with a moderate content of chromite and hercynite. The spinel is thought to have crystallized from a magma high in aluminum and low in iron, with possible crystal separation, followed by incorporation in clastic rocks by impacts. Many bulk compositions of the elastic fragments fall near the field of primary spinel in the model system An-Fo-SiO2. Experimental syntheses of Apollo 14 rocks are needed to test the suggested primary origin.

+Gz tolerance after 14 days bed rest and the effects of rehydration.

Measurement of the reduction in centrifugation tolerance after two weeks of bedrest with moderate daily exercise, with an attempt to determine if rehydration improves +Gz tolerance. There were significant reductions in +Gz tolerance during bedrest periods at three acceleration levels. Rehydration resulted in a significant increase in tolerance at 2.1G but it did not restore tolerance to control levels. Rehydration did not affect tolerance at 3.2G and 3.8G.

Some microphysical features of coastal and inland fogs.

Radiation fogs sampled at Los Angeles were found to possess low visibilities, high liquid water content (LWC), relatively small drops, narrow peaked drop-size distributions, and high concentrations of micron sized haze droplets. Typical characteristics of valley fogs observed at Elmira, N.Y., were low visibilities, moderately high LWC, low concentrations of haze droplets, and similar drop size distributions to those measured in Los Angeles. On the other hand, advection fogs observed in Vandenberg were characterized by less severe visibilities, low LWC, large drops in a broad drop-size distribution, and very low haze nucleus concentrations.

Oscillatory burning of solid propellants including gas phase time lag.

An analysis has been performed for oscillatory burning of solid propellants including gas phase time lag. The gaseous flame is assumed to be premixed and laminar with a one-step overall chemical reaction. The propellant is assumed to decompose according to the Arrenhius Law, with no condensed phase reaction. With this model, strong gas phase resonance has been found in certain cases at the characteristic gas-phase frequencies, but the peaking of the acoustic admittance is in the direction favoring the damping of pressure waves. At still higher frequencies, moderate wave-amplifying ability was found. The limit of low frequency response obtained previously by Denison and Baum was recovered, and the limitations of the quasi-steady theory were investigated.

Performance of absorptive liners in the presence of spinning modes.

Results of free field measurements of the absorption coefficient of fiberglass, which indicate that the material has a high coefficient over a broad frequency range with little angular dependence. This material is also a very effective duct liner and attenuates spinning modes more rapidly than plane waves. The resonant absorber tested exhibits a strong angular and frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient, is only a moderately effective duct liner for spinning modes, and produces no measurable attenuation for plane waves.

Prebiotic phosphorylation of thymidine at 65 C in simulated desert conditions.

The phosphorylation of thymidine is described for a variety of conditions at 65 C to demonstrate that the reaction could readily take place in deserts at the present time. This might be used as an indication that urea-phosphate mixtures could have been important as phosphorylating agents on the primitive earth. Reaction products were identified by comparing their chromatographic and electrophoretic mobilities with those of authentic materials and by enzymatic degradation. The results show that good yields of nucleotides are obtained when nucleosides are heated with urea-phospate mixtures at 65 C. Reactions proceed more rapidly at moderate humidities than in a stream of dry nitrogen. Occasional wetting results in even faster and more extensive reactions. There was no reaction for a mixture of urea and trimetaphosphate.

Noise field of a supersonic Mach 1.5 cold model jet.

Systematic surveys of both the near and far noise fields were made for a supersonic (nozzle design Mach number 1.5) cold model jet. The purpose of this investigation was to extend the existing understanding of the noise field of a supersonic shock-free jet at a moderate exit Mach number and the variations in its acoustic behavior when the nozzle was operated at its underexpanded mode, where strong shock waves were present. It was found that the broad-band pressure spectra of apparent sources in each of the individual characteristic flow regions were grossly similar. The strongest source for the shock-free jet was located in the region between the laminar core tip and the supersonic core tip, whereas for the underexpanded jet the strongest source was found near the middle of the flow region containing repetitive shock waves. It is shown that the significant increase in the noise output at the underexpanded mode of operation was primarily due to high-frequency components.

Suprathermal ions near the moon.

This paper reports some preliminary results from the suprathermal ion detectors deployed on the lunar surface by the Apollo 12 and 14 astronauts. Salient features of these results include: the possible observation of sporadic venting of gas from the lunar surface; evidence for a prompt ionization and acceleration mechanism operating in the lunar exosphere; and a preliminary measurement yielding approximately 1 month for the e-folding decay time for the heavier components of the exhaust gases from the Apollo lunar landing systems. Prominent phenomena from which these results have been derived are: (1) ion bursts of low to moderate energy seen in conjunction with lunar sunrise and sunset; (2) solar wind energy ions detected on the night side of the moon; (3) ions of several keV energy seen during the lunar sunset to midnight quadrant of the moon's orbit; (4) magnetosheath ion flux enhancements; (5) ion bursts generated by the lunar impact of the Apollo 13 Saturn upper stage; and (6) geomagnetic storm associated ion flux variations in the earth's magnetotail.

The far-ultraviolet emission spectrum of the K2 III star, Arcturus.

A moderate-resolution far-ultraviolet spectrum of the K2 IIIp star Arcturus, obtained with a rocket-borne spectrometer, shows chromospheric emission features. Hydrogen L-alpha and O I (1303 A) are clearly identified. The O I (1304 A) stellar surface brightness is as great or greater than that of the sun. Other metal lines, including those of carbon, are weak compared to the O I line.

Observation of a quadrupole interaction for cubic imperfections exhibiting a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect.

The observation and interpretation of weak EPR transitions, identified as 'forbidden' transitions, establish the existence of a new type of quadrupole interaction for cubic-symmetry imperfections. This interaction is simply a consequence of the ground-vibronic-state degeneracy. The signs as well as the magnitudes of the quadrupole-coupling coefficients are determined experimentally. These data agree well with the predictions of crystal field theory modified to account for a weak-to-moderate vibronic interaction (i.e., a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect).
