Climatologically tuned reflectivity-rain rate relations and links to area-time integrals

An effort is made to determine relationships between reflectivity (Z) and rain rate (R) which are tuned to the local climatology. The development of such relations was motivated by the need to understand the role of precipitation in controlling general circulation and in affecting such phenomena as ENSO. Attention is given to methods of deriving such relations and how they are linked to area integral rainfall measurements. In essence, the relation is tuned so that the probability distribution of reflectivity, P(Z), replicates that of R over some predetermined space-time climatic domain. Thus, the accurate measurement of the average R over any smaller domain depends on how closely the sampled P(Z) approximates the climatic P(Z). The probability matching method used is a modification of the approach of Calheiros and Zawadzki (1987) and Rosenfeld (1980). The technique is applied to data from Germany and the eastern tropical Atlantic (GATE).

Oligomerizations of deoxyadenosine bis-phosphates and of their 3-prime-5-prime, 3-prime-3-prime, and 5-prime-5-prime dimers - Effects of a pyrophosphate-linked, poly(T) analog

The effect of a 3-prime-5-prime pyrophosphate-linked oligomer of pTp on oligomerizations of pdAp and of its 3-prime-5-prime, 3-prime-3-prime, and 5-prime-5-prime dimers was investigated, using HPLC to separate the reaction mixtures; peak detection was by absorbance monitoring at 254 nm. It was expected that the dimers would form stable complexes with the template, with the degree of stability depending upon the internal linkage of each dimer. It was found that, although the isomers differ substantially in their oligomerization behavior in the absence of template, the analog-template catalyzes the oligomerization to about the same extent in all three cases.

End-point controller design for an experimental two-link flexible manipulator using convex optimization

Recent results in linear controller design are used to design an end-point controller for an experimental two-link flexible manipulator. A nominal 14-state linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) controller was augmented with a 528-tap finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter designed using convex optimization techniques. The resulting 278-state controller produced improved end-point trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection in simulation and experimentally in real time.

Control design variable linking for optimization of structural/control systems

In this study a method is presented to integrate the design space of structural/control system optimization problems in the case of state feedback control. Conventional structural sizing variables and elements of the feedback gain matrix are both treated as strictly independent design variables in the optimization by extending design variable linking concepts to the control gains. Examples which involve a variety of behavior constraints, including dynamic transient response and control force limits, are effectively solved by using the method presented.

Speckle interferometry of Hipparcos link stars. III

A third list of stars is presented which have been tested by speckle interferometry for use in the Hubble Space Telescope link between the Hipparcos astrometric reference frame and the extragalactic VLBI reference frame. Structural information on angular scales of 0.15-1.2 arcsec for 34 Southern Hemisphere stars is reported from observations made with the Imperial College Speckle Interferometer mounted on the Mount Stromlo 1.9-m telescope. Twenty-four percent of the stars (8 out of the 34) show evidence of multiplicity, in agreement with previous observations in this program.

Learning control system design based on 2-D theory - An application to parallel link manipulator

An approach to iterative learning control system design based on two-dimensional system theory is presented. A two-dimensional model for the iterative learning control system which reveals the connections between learning control systems and two-dimensional system theory is established. A learning control algorithm is proposed, and the convergence of learning using this algorithm is guaranteed by two-dimensional stability. The learning algorithm is applied successfully to the trajectory tracking control problem for a parallel link robot manipulator. The excellent performance of this learning algorithm is demonstrated by the computer simulation results.

Modeling and tachometer feedback in the control of an experimental single link flexible structure

In this work a formulation for the modeling of a single link flexible structure will be introduced that includes the effects of dynamic interaction between the actuator and structure. These effects are the rotational modal participation factors for the structure's vibratory motion that occurs at the slewing axis. It will be shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that this dynamic interaction can be advantageous for vibration suppression of the flexible modes of the system during slewing positioning maneuvers.

All high Tc edge-geometry weak links utilizing Y-Ba-Cu-O barrier layers

High quality YBa2Cu3O(7-x) normal-metal/YBa2Cu3O(7-x) edge-geometry weak links have been fabricated using nonsuperconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O barrier layers deposited by laser ablation at reduced growth temperatures. Devices incorporating 25-100 A thick barrier layers exhibit current-voltage characteristics consistent with the resistively shunted junction model, with strong microwave and magnetic field response at temperatures up to 85 K. The critical currents vary exponentially with barrier thickness, and the resistances scale linearly with Y-Ba-Cu-O interlayer thickness and device area, indicating good barrier uniformity, with an effective mormal metal coherence length of 20 A.

A comparison of optical technologies for a high data rate Mars link

Several optical systems, based on Nd:YAG, GaAs, and CO2 laser sources and employing both direct and heterodyne detection, are analyzed in order to assess their feasibility in providing high data rate (10-1000 Mbps) Mars-to-earth communications. The rms pointing/tracking accuracy is shown to be a critical parameter in defining the Mars-earth optical link. Data obtained reveal that unless, extremely small rms pointing and tracking errors can be achieved (sigma less than .2 microrad), the most promising optical implementation appears to be the Nd:YAG laser using direct detection and high order PPM modulation.

Optical Link For Readout From Focal-Plane Array

Outputs of photodetectors modulate beam of light. Proposed optical link carries analog readout signals from photodetectors in focal-plane array to external signal-processing circuitry. Insensitive to electromagnetic interference at suboptical frequencies, and imposes smaller heat load on cryogenic apparatus because it does not include high-power electronic amplifier or laser transmitter within cold chamber.

An overview of Space Communication Artificial Intelligence for Link Evaluation Terminal (SCAILET) Project

A software application to assist end-users of the link evaluation terminal (LET) for satellite communications is being developed. This software application incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and will be deployed as an interface to LET. The high burst rate (HBR) LET provides 30 GHz transmitting/20 GHz receiving (220/110 Mbps) capability for wideband communications technology experiments with the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). The HBR LET can monitor and evaluate the integrity of the HBR communications uplink and downlink to the ACTS satellite. The uplink HBR transmission is performed by bursting the bit-pattern as a modulated signal to the satellite. The HBR LET can determine the bit error rate (BER) under various atmospheric conditions by comparing the transmitted bit pattern with the received bit pattern. An algorithm for power augmentation will be applied to enhance the system's BER performance at reduced signal strength caused by adverse conditions.

Reduced electrical bandwidth receivers for direct detection 4-ary PPM optical communication intersatellite links

This interim progress report consists of copies of three reports written for NASA's Flight System Development and Demonstration (FSDD) project on optical intersatellite links. The first report, 'Test results of the PlessCor avalanche photodiode (APD) preamplifier for use in the 50 Mbps quaternary pulse position modulator (QPPM) receiver,' was prepared for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The second, 'Performance of Q-ary PPM receiver under additive white Gaussian noise,' was prepared at the request of NASA Lewis Research Center for testing the electronic systems for the FSDD project. The third, 'Use of a Bessel lowpass filter as an approximate raised cosine filter,' was written for raised cosine filter implementation in the FSDD QPPM receiver.

The link evaluation terminal for the advanced communications technology satellite experiments program

The experimental NASA satellite, Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), introduces new technology for high throughput 30 to 20 GHz satellite services. Contained in a single communication payload is both a regenerative TDMA system and multiple 800 MHz 'bent pipe' channels routed to spot beams by a switch matrix. While only one mode of operation is typical during any experiment, both modes can operate simultaneously with reduced capability due to sharing of the transponder. NASA-Lewis instituted a ground terminal development program in anticipation of the satellite launch to verify the performance of the switch matrix mode of operations. Specific functions are built into the ground terminal to evaluate rain fade compensation with uplink power control and to monitor satellite transponder performance with bit error rate measurements. These functions were the genesis of the ground terminal's name, Link Evaluation Terminal, often referred to as LET. Connectors are included in LET that allow independent experimenters to run unique modulation or network experiments through ACTS using only the RF transmit and receive portions of LET. Test data indicate that LET will be able to verify important parts of ACTS technology and provide independent experimenters with a useful ground terminal. Lab measurements of major subsystems integrated into LET are presented. Bit error rate is measured with LET in an internal loopback mode.

Assessment of cockpit interface concepts for data link retrofit

The problem is examined of retrofitting older generation aircraft with data link capability. The approach taken analyzes requirements for the cockpit interface, based on review of prior research and opinions obtained from subject matter experts. With this background, essential functions and constraints for a retrofit installation are defined. After an assessment of the technology available to meet the functions and constraints, candidate design concepts are developed. The most promising design concept is described in detail. Finally, needs for further research and development are identified.

Object linking in repositories

This topic is covered in three sections. The first section explores some of the architectural ramifications of extending the Eichmann/Atkins lattice-based classification scheme to encompass the assets of the full life cycle of software development. A model is considered that provides explicit links between objects in addition to the edges connecting classification vertices in the standard lattice. The second section gives a description of the efforts to implement the repository architecture using a commercially available object-oriented database management system. Some of the features of this implementation are described, and some of the next steps to be taken to produce a working prototype of the repository are pointed out. In the final section, it is argued that design and instantiation of reusable components have competing criteria (design-for-reuse strives for generality, design-with-reuse strives for specificity) and that providing mechanisms for each can be complementary rather than antagonistic. In particular, it is demonstrated how program slicing techniques can be applied to customization of reusable components.

Dynamic model and cooperative control of a serially linked manipulator system

The use of a redundant manipulator to execute multiple tasks specified at different points on the manipulator is demonstrated. This is accomplished by decomposing a redundant arm at an intermediate arm location called the 'elbow' into two nonredundant local arms referred as the 'basearm' and the 'forearm'. This decomposition transforms a redundant arm into a serially linked dual-arm system, where the cooperation between the basearm and the forearm is carried out through the task distribution and the elbow control. The kinematics of a decomposed redundant manipulator are discussed, and a Cartesian space dynamic model and dynamic equation of a decomposed redundant manipulator are presented. The capability of generating Cartesian force, the local efficiency of generating Cartesian acceleration, and dynamic task distribution are discussed.
