A UNIQUE APPROACH TO ACHIEVING SIZE-CONSTRAINED QUASI-HALO ORBITS FOR THE ROMAN SPACE TELESCOPE

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST) is an infrared space observatory planned for launch in the mid-2020’s. The launch window design for RST is subject to a wide variety of simultaneous requirements that require careful consideration and control of mission orbits and the trajectories used to achieve them. This work describes an innovative methodology that blends classical methods with modern manifold approaches and numerical optimization to flexibly determine optimal transfers to desriable mission orbits for any day of the year.Solutions found with this highly automated strategy are gaurunteed to meet requirements by construction. Results show that RST can launch for 80% of the year using maneuvers that are well within the fuel budget, significantly reducing cost and risk to the mission

Exploring Transfers Between Earth-Moon Halo Orbits via Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning

Multi-Reward Proximal Policy Optimization, a multi-objective deep reinforcement learning algorithm, is used to examine the design space of low-thrust trajectories for a SmallSat transferring between two libration point orbits in the Earth-Moon system. Using Multi-Reward Proximal Policy Optimization, multiple policies are simultaneously and efficiently trained on three distinct trajectory design scenarios. Each policy is trained to create a unique control scheme based on the trajectory design scenario and assigned reward function: a unique combination of weights scaling competing objectives that guide the spacecraft to the target mission orbit, incentivize faster flight times, and penalize propellant mass usage. Then, the policies are evaluated on the same set of perturbed initial conditions in each scenario to generate the propellant mass usages, flight times, and state discontinuities from a reference trajectory for each control scheme. This solution space of low-thrust trajectories for a SmallSat is used to examine the multi-objective trade space for the trajectory design scenario. By autonomously constructing the solution space, insights into the required propellant mass, flight time, and transfer geometry are rapidly achieved.

Analysis of Cislunar Transfers Departing from a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit Using Solar Electric Propulsion

An analysis is completed to support the design of optimized trajectories of a massive spacecraft from an L2 Southern NRHO to a Distant Retrograde Orbit and a L2 Northern NRHO using a Solar Electric Propulsion System (SEP). An optimized trajectory is developed for each transfer for a 54t spacecraft utilizing a 26.6kW SEP system. A parameterization is developed for each reference transfer to allow analysis of the sensitivity of the trajectory to changes in vehicle mass, SEP power, and Ion Propulsion System (IPS) performance. Required Dv for each transfer is characterized by the initial acceleration of the spacecraft, thus allowing trajectories to be assessed over a wide range of vehicle mass and SEP power inputs. This approach is shown to be useful in identifying optimal IPS configurations for minimizing propellant requirements for the reference transfers. Additionally, the analysis identifies regions where increases in SEP power do not immediately result in a corresponding decrease in required propellant as well as highlights the relative sensitivities of propellant requirements to changes in IPS thrust and specific impulse.

Debris Avoidance and Phase Change Maneuvers in Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits

Over the course of its lifetime, Ga teway may execute excursions from itsba seline NRHO that include short-lead maneuvers to avoid other spacecraft or debris objects or long-lea d rephasing within the NRHO to support rendezvous or other mission objectives. The dynamical cha racteristics of the NRHO a re distinct from those of low Ea rth a nd low luna r orbits due to the simulta neous gra vitational influences of the Ea rth a nd Moon. Thus, new a pproaches for executing debris a voidance ma neuvers a nd repha sing ma neuversa re necessary.
