Medium Voltage Energy Hub Based on Multilevel Cascaded H Bridge-Dual Active Bridge Back-to-Back Converter for Power Distribution Feeders Interconnection and Multiple Simultaneous Grid Services

This paper presents a medium voltage energy hub based on a modular design of a multilevel cascaded H bridge (CHB)-dual active bridge (DAB) converter. The energy hub composed of the two CHB-DAB modules with a back-to-back topology can be utilized as a grid interconnection component between distribution feeders. The energy hub can provide multiple simultaneous grid services such as voltage regulation, power factor correction, as well as active power flow control between the connected feeders, contributing to grid flexibility, efficiency, reliability, and resilience. Circuit structure and control schemes for the energy hub including both local controllers for each converter and outer loop controllers are proposed to enable simultaneous grid services with coordination to prevent the overloading of the hub. To validate the performance of the hub, the hub system is interconnected between two IEEE 4-bus feeders and provides voltage regulation for both feeders, while controlling active power flow between them. The system and the feeders are implemented in Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) for real-time simulation verification.

This software presents the design and control for a hybrid DER site with integrated dispatchable electrolyzers. It is a comprehensive solution for regulating the dispatch of electrolyzer demand to support the grid using the respective control functions. Multiple control functions (ramp control, frequency support control, dispatch prioritization) are developed to integrate the proposed site for multiple services around load, voltage and frequency control. This allows the site owners to participate in both distribution and bulk system energy markets for grid ancillary services.

EMOS (Energy Management Optimization System) [SWR-21-46]

EMOS software performs a real-time hierarchal optimal control for energy systems like multi-port electric vehicles charging site with distributed energy resources (DERs) and energy storage systems (ESSs). It gathers information in real-time from electric vehicles, power grid, and DERs, solves a multi-objective energy management optimization problem, and output setpoint for chargers, ESS converters, DERs converters, and grid converters. The software incorporates a novel integration of two control tasks: a) An Energy Management Optimization (EMO), which is the brain of EMOS controller that gathers information in real-time from EVs [e.g., battery size, state-of-charge (SOC), desired SOC, and charge acceptance curve], grid (e.g., electricity price, allowed feeder capacity, ramp rate limit, and reactive power), and DERs (e.g., prediction for solar generation for PV systems). It solves a control optimization problem in real-time to find optimal setpoint for ESSs power dispatch, EVs charging rate, and grid inverters. The objectives are to (1) minimize the charging cost considering grid energy, demand charges, and battery energy, (2) minimize charging time to meet fast charging criterion, (3) keep high energy level on ESSs at the end of an operating period, while satisfying constraints related to grid, EVs, and power converters. b) Real-Time Energy Management System (RT-EMS) is a rule-based algorithm that has faster response than EMO. It receives optimal setpoint from EMO and actual measurements from the system and modify the setpoint to compensate for any fast disturbance in the system, until a new optimum solution is received. Fast disturbances may include vehicle connect/disconnect, unpredicted variation in DERs profiles, variation in grid voltage, errors in PV generation prediction, and others. In addition, RT-EMS regulates voltage at point of common coupling (PCC) by managing reactive power of grid converters.

Three-Dimensional Grid Visualization for Planning Activities: A Dubai Case Study

National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), in collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Infra-X, has undertaken the Energy Visualization Analysis Project. The aim of this project is to enhance analytical and 3D visualization capabilities for distribution network planning and renewable energy integration. As modern grid continues to evolve with large-scale solar PV deployment and emerging distributed energy resources (DERs), the ability to effectively analyze, visualize, and communicate complex grid behaviors has become increasingly critical. The project focuses on developing empirical use cases based on real distribution feeder data and engineering workflows, ensuring the outcomes are directly aligned with operational environment. Through time-series power flow simulations and nodal hosting capacity analysis, the study quantifies the impacts of high PV penetration on voltage and thermal limits within representative 11 kV feeders. These analyses identify specific nodes and conditions where DER integration challenges arise. Furthermore, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) optimization algorithm was applied to determine the optimal size and placement of storage systems that can mitigate network constraints and enhance hosting capacity. The comparative results between base-case and BESS-augmented scenarios clearly demonstrate improvements in network stability and load management efficiency. In parallel, the NLR team developed an immersive 3D visualization framework, enabling interactive exploration of grid simulations using commodity head-mounted display (HMD) systems. This framework transforms conventional 2D simulation data into spatially intuitive visual environments - allowing engineers to analyze feeder conditions, PV hosting potential, and BESS effects in real time. This report represents the first foundational phase in establishing a visualization-driven analytical ecosystem. It provides a methodological foundation for data integration, visualization architecture, and simulation-based decision support, paving the way for large-scale adoption of immersive visualization across DEWA's Smart Grid Initiative, R&D activities, and future network resilience studies.

Dynamic Optimal Dispatch of Energy Systems with Intermittent Renewables and Damage Model

With the increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the grid, there is a growing need for process systems-based strategies that integrate dispatchable and variable energy systems for supplying the demand while maintaining grid reliability. The proposed framework corresponds to a dynamic mixed-integer linear programming optimization approach that integrates coal-fired and natural gas-fired power plants, NaS batteries for energy storage, and solar/wind energy to supply the demand. This optimization approach considers an economic goal and constraints to provide power balance while maintaining the overall damage of the natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plant drum under a maximum stress as well as avoiding the overheating of the NGCC superheater and reheater. Renewable curtailment levels are also retained at minimum levels. Case studies are analyzed considering different loads and renewable penetration levels. The results show that the demand was met for all cases. Grid flexibility was mostly provided by the NGCC, while the batteries were used sparingly. In addition, considering a CO 2 equivalent analysis, the environmental performance was intrinsically connected to grid flexibility and the level of renewable penetration. Stress analysis results reinforced the necessity for an equipment health-related constraint.

Study of Communication Boundaries of Primal-Dual-Based Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS)

As the coordination of distributed energy resources becomes more necessary to provide grid services through a distributed energy resource management system (DERMS), studying the communication requirements for successful real-world, low-cost implementation becomes increasingly important. Specifically, this paper studies the necessary communication time resolutions between the different system components for a primal-dual-based DERMS, a highly developed DERMS framework. We design a metric to evaluate the functionality of a DERMS with respect to providing grid services. Using numerical simulations based on a real-world feeder in Colorado, we show that the upper bound on the time resolutions is on the order of minutes instead of the previously assumed order of seconds.

Blockchain-Based Smart Contracts Use for Photovoltaic Energy Trade Transactions

In recent decades, interest in renewable energy via solar energy has increased, especially in California and Nevada. In a region that can produce enough solar power for self-use, prosumers must use or sell surplus energy. Solar energy self-consumption is essential in modern energy transactions in the grid. This paper proposes an approach towards grid services that includes photovoltaic hardware to store the excess energy in battery storage. Such energy can then be sold to power companies while the transaction is handled using blockchain. Software, security architecture and data flow requirements based on the Ethereum Blockchain are included. Furthermore, this solution protects the private information of seller and buyer and secures transactions.

Q-Learning-Based Impact Assessment of Propagating Extreme Weather on Distribution Grids

The increasing number of power outage events due to extreme weather conditions is hampering us socioeconomically. Preparing in advance for the extreme weather event is critical. It can help utility operators to reduce grid damages, restore grid service quickly, allocate energy resources and repair crews strategically, and hence dramatically increase grid resilience. In this paper, we propose a method to identify the sequence of worst impact zones in the power grid caused by extreme weather events based on Q-learning (a reinforcement learning algorithm). To quantity the weather severity and its effect on the grid, we model the impact of extreme weather on the grid as a function of intensity, vulnerability, and exposure. A modified IEEE 123-node distribution feeder is presented in a mesh grid and experimented for sequences of zones identification. Finally, simulation results present the identified sequences and their associated impacts on the grid caused by extreme weather events.

Detection of False Data Injection Attacks in Battery Stacks Using Input Noise-Aware Nonlinear State Estimation and Cumulative Sum Algorithms

Grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are vulnerable to false data injection attacks (FDIAs), which could be used to disrupt state of charge (SoC) estimation. Inaccurate SoC estimation has negative impacts on system availability, reliability, safety, and the cost of operation. In this article a combination of a Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) algorithm and an improved input noise-aware extended Kalman filter (INAEKF) is proposed for the detection and identification of FDIAs in the voltage and current sensors of a battery stack. The series-connected stack is represented by equivalent circuit models, the SoC is modeled with a charge reservoir model and the states are estimated using the INAEKF. Further, the root mean squared error of the states’ estimation by the modified INAEKF was found to be superior to the traditional EKF. By employing the INAEKF, this article addresses the research gap that many state estimators make asymmetrical assumptions about the noise corrupting the system. Additionally, the INAEKF estimates the input allowing for the identification of FDIA, which many alternative methods are unable to achieve. The proposed algorithm was able to detect attacks in the voltage and current sensors in 99.16% of test cases, with no false positives. Utilizing the INAEKF compared to the standard EKF allowed for the identification of FDIA in the input of the system in 98.43% of test cases.

CRADA Number NFE-19-07846 with Grid Fruit, LLC (CRADA Final Report)

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) NFE-19-07846 between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Grid Fruit, LLC (Grid Fruit) focused on simulating, monitoring, and adjusting controls of commercial refrigerator and freezer systems to provide load flexibility and demand response services from these machines. Viewing these medium and low-temp coolers as thermal masses, the volumes of chilled air in these coolers make them time-shiftable loads ripe for deployment at optimal times. Grid Fruit is a startup company developing methods to schedule the chilling cycles (e.g., in “build load” and “shed load” grid events) to provide energy efficiency, peak shifting, and other benefits both to the grid and the broader environment. These benefits can be magnified by coordinating chillers with HVAC, lights, computers, and other loads. Grid Fruit completed simulations and then selected and ordered controls hardware to prove the technology were successful, but the diversity of chiller models in the field without digital controls, as well as limited market demand at present, make further exploration necessary before commercialization.

Opportunities in Hydropower and Pumped Storage Hydropower

Hydropower and pumped storage hydropower (PSH) are established technologies with a long-standing presence in the United States, but the industry remains dynamic with an active relicensing pipeline and growing interest in PSH to provide large-scale energy storage and grid services. NLR has developed a range of tools, data, and analysis that supports the evaluation of hydropower and PSH opportunities, complementing other DOE-supported efforts in this space. This presentation initiates a conversation around the future of hydropower and PSH and how it can inform the National Academy of Sciences investigation of possible DOE-supported regional energy-water technology pilots.

Integration of Total-Sky Imager Data with a Physics-Based Smart Persistence Model for Intra-Hour Forecasting of Solar Radiation

Short-term solar forecasting models based solely on global horizontal irradiance (GHI) measurements are often unable to discriminate the forecasting of the factors affecting GHI from those that can be precisely computed by atmospheric models. Our previous study introduced a Physics-based Smart Persistence model for Intra-hour forecasting of solar radiation (PSPI) that decomposed the forecasting of GHI into the computation of extraterrestrial solar radiation and solar zenith angle and the forecasting of cloud albedo and cloud fraction. The extraterrestrial solar radiation and solar zenith angle were accurately computed by the Solar Position Algorithm (SPA) developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). A cloud retrieval technique was used to estimate cloud albedo and cloud fraction from surface-based observations of GHI. With the assumption of persistent cloud structures, the cloud albedo and cloud fraction were predicted for future time steps using a two-stream approximation and a 5-minute exponential weighted moving average, respectively. The model evaluation indicated the estimation and forecast of cloud fraction mostly contributed to the uncertainty of the PSPI though it overcame the persistence and smart persistence models in all forecast time horizons between 5 and 60 minutes. This study aims to enhance the PSPI by ingesting surface-based observations of cloud fraction from a total sky imager (TSI). The estimation and forecast of cloud albedo is correspondingly improved by utilizing the cloud fraction observations and thus leads to more accurate GHI forecast. Various time-series analysis methods are also investigated on the forecasting of cloud fraction and cloud albedo for further improving the GHI forecast. These improvements are valuable for many applications, such as forecasting energy use for buildings, grid operations, and ultimately bringing down the cost of solar energy.
