Advanced Modeling and Simulation to Characterize Advanced Boiling Water Reactor Source Terms to Support a Regulatory Approval Pathway for Right-Sized Emergency Planning Zone. Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (A-BWR) Project Phase 2

The United States Department of Energy (US DOE) is currently supporting the development of various small modular reactor (SMR), microreactor and advanced reactor designs. These reactors have improved safety features as compared to conventional Large Light Water Reactors (LLWRs), which include features that improve potential reduction of radiological source terms in the event of design and beyond-design basis accidents. Specifically, some reactors feature a relatively smaller containment volume with respect to the available surface area for fission product deposition; these include Integrated Pressurized Water Reactors (iPWRs), such as the NuScale SMR and SMR-type Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) such as General Electric-Hitachi’s BWRX-300 design.

Spill Behavior, Detection, and Mitigation for Emerging Nontraditional Marine Fuels

In this report, we describe the predicted impact of large spills or releases of alternative marine fuels. The fuels covered in this report are those that have been identified as potential future fuels for the marine shipping sector by industry experts and government agencies overseeing the development of renewable and low-carbon fuels. Several of these fuels are already in use, such as liquified natural gas, renewable diesel, ethanol, methanol, and biodiesel. Other fuels are hydrogen, dimethyl ether, ammonia, and bio-intermediates, such as catalytic fast pyrolysis biooils and hydrothermal liquefaction bio-crudes. The property databases of these fuels are extensive enough to form predictive assessments. Other potential marine fuels, such as lignin ethanol, have not been extensively evaluated and are therefore not included is this study. For each fuel chemistry, we have surmised the spill profiles and environmental impacts based on existing studies and relevant properties. The technologies used to detect spills (especially those for crude oil detection) are also reviewed for their applicability with alternative fuels, and in some instances, recommendations to improve these technologies for use with a particular fuel chemistry are put forward. Finally, current containment and remediation technologies are reviewed and assessed for their efficacy at handling these alternative fuels.

Emerging Technologies Review: Water Reuse Systems for Cooling Tower Applications

This report explores the concept of water reuse systems for cooling tower water makeup, specifically focusing on the use of alternative water sources, and the viability of these systems for Air Force installations and operations. Cooling is a critical requirement for DAF operations, and alternative water supplies that enable cooling tower use during a disruption of utility-supplied water increase Air Force resilience. The components of a water reuse system for cooling towers include alternative water supplies, storage, treatment, and distribution in addition to the cooling tower itself. Alternative water sources are not derived from fresh surface water or groundwater and can provide a redundant water supply to utility supply or to fresh water produced on site.

Unraveling Emergent Quantum States in Magnetic Topological Insulators using High Pressure Neutron Scattering

This proposal aims to uncover novel quantum phenomena under high pressure and understand the pressure effects on the atomic electronic interactions in magnetic topological materials. This program supports a combined neutron scattering and materials discovery of novel magnetic materials that display the coexistence of magnetism plus other physical phenomena such as a non-trivial electronic band topology under high pressure. The goal of this project is to close a long-standing knowledge gap in quantum materials research by developing a high-pressure neutron scattering (HP-NS) toolbox to systematically determine the magnetic structures and electronic interactions present at high pressure.

"A" is for Ammonia: Current Challenges, Emerging Research and NREL's Vision for a Decarbonized Future [Slides]

Ammonia (chemical formula NH 3 ) is so pervasive in our history that human beings simply wouldn't exist without it: 4 billion people on this planet are fed by food grown using ammonia fertilizer, but this powerful molecule consumes nearly 2% of the world's energy supply to be produced at an industrial scale. This guest lecture will first explore the energy challenges of ammonia's current means of industrial production, followed by a new vision for its synthesis using only renewable electricity, air and water, and opportunities to use ammonia as a hydrogen source. Fertilizer may one day fuel more than just our mouths.

Emergent Quantum Magnetism and Cryogenic Spin-Memory in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Recently developed techniques for assembling moiré heterostructures have enabled unprecedented control of the interlayer interactions within the heterostructure, allowing for the realization of strongly correlated electronic states. The experimentally realized states, to date, include a variety of topological states, superconductivity, and strange metal behavior. However, the phenomenology varies significantly from sample to sample. Here we will present microscopy techniques for further characterization of both the progenitor exfoliated materials and the composite moiré heterostructure. The application of these techniques has allowed for an unprecidented degree of characterization in ambient conditions. Additionally we will explore the use of resistively detected electron spin resonance (ESR) as a novel probe for spin order in moirés. While our results do not show clearly dispersive features that would unambiguously evince spin excitations within the sample, the technique is still promising.

The VIBES Are Shifting: Assessing Emergent Capabilities in Multi-Modal Models

Researchers assessing open-source domains such as the internet, and particularly those studying information conflict, often have no single prescribed workflow. In the course of their research, they may need to perform a diverse array of tasks far beyond simply identifying an ever-changing set of objects. These analytical tasks can include ascertaining the provenance of images, understand an image in the context of accompanying text-based data, or identifying indicators of digital image manipulation. They must further be able to do this at the scale of tens of thousands of images or more. Traditional machine vision models have typically lacked the flexibility and breadth of performance sufficient for these needs. The research team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory assessed the performance of a single baseline CLIP ViT-L model against a series of analytical tasks relevant for the study of online information conflict.
