Silicon solar cells with a total power capacity of 30 kilowatts

The bulk of the contract effort was carried out in the following two phases: Phase 1 -- module design, Pre-production module fabrication, inspection and test. Phase 2 -- Production, test and delivery. Effort during the first two months of the contract concentrated on design of a solar module to meet specification. Basic module design resulting from this effort is as follows: (1) frame design; (2) cell pan design; (3) cell interconnection; (4) encapsulation; (5) electrical performance.

Critical review of Ames Life Science participation in Spacelab Mission Development Test 3: The SMD 3 management study

A management study was conducted to specify activities and problems encountered during the development of procedures for documentation and crew training on experiments, as well as during the design, integration, and delivery of a life sciences experiment payload to Johnson Space Center for a 7 day simulation of a Spacelab mission. Conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future Ames' life sciences projects are included. Broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the environment of space are also addressed.

Preliminary design package for solar heating and cooling systems

Summarized preliminary design information on activities associated with the development, delivery and support of solar heating and cooling systems is given. These systems are for single family dwellings and commercial applications. The heating/cooling system use a reversible vapor compression heat pump that is driven in the cooling mode by a Rankine power loop, and in the heating mode by a variable speed electric motor. The heating/cooling systems differ from the heating-only systems in the arrangement of the heat pump subsystem and the addition of a cooling tower to provide the heat sink for cooling mode operation.

Solar heat transport fluid

The progress made in the development and delivery of noncorrosive fluid subsystems is discussed. These subsystems are to be compatible with closed-loop solar heating or combined heating and hot water systems. They are also to be compatible with both metallic and non-metallic plumbing systems. The performance testing of a number of fluids is described.

The 40 KW of Solar Cell Modules for the Large Scale Production Task a Low Cost Silicon Solar Array Project

Forty kilowatts of solar cell modules was produced in this program. This is equivalent to 4123 modules. The average power output per module was 9.7 watts at 16.5 volts, 60 C and 100 mW/sq cm. The peak production rate was 200 modules per week which is equal to 1.9 kW per week. This rate was sustained for over four and one-half months and is equivalent to 100 kW per year. This final report covers the solar cell module design, electrical and power performance, module preproduction environmental test results, production and shipping schedule, program summary, and delivery. A cost analysis section is written. Particular emphasis on the percentage of labor and material utilized in constructing a solar cell module is presented. Also included are cost reduction recommendations.

Marine decision aids from space

The article discusses satellite observation of marine environments via microwave sensors and visible/infrared measurements. Specific applications include the monitoring of physical oceanography, weather and climate, coastal processes, ice processes, and resource use management. Four types of information delivery systems are identified: direct-to-user, regional/local user, global modeling user, and research user modes. Current developments in the marine information system include onboard correlation of synthetic aperture radar images at 10 to 100 m resolutions, and the extraction of wave, ship, iceberg or areal feature information from the image or signal before correlation.

A survey of users of earth resources remote sensing data

The use of Landsat imagery and digital data, Skylab data and high-altitude aerial imagery by industry, government, academic and foreign analysts was surveyed. The study indicated that while most users are satisfied with current Landsat product quality and spectral coverage, there does exist a significant demand for extension of the spectral coverage to thermal and microwave regions, for resolutions in the 20 to 40 and 10 to 20 meter range, and for more rapid data delivery. Problems involving the acceptance of digital processing techniques by some users are also mentioned.

On achieving sufficient dual station range accuracy for deep space navigation at zero declination

Since the Voyager Mission will encounter Saturn at a time when the planet will be nearly in the earth's equatorial plane, earth-based orbit determination will be more difficult than usual because of the so-called zero-declination singularity associated with conventional radiometric observations. Simulation studies show that in order to meet the required delivery accuracy at Saturn, a relative range measurement between the Goldstone and Canberra Deep Space Stations must be accurate to 4.5 times the square root of two meters. Topics discussed include the nature of error sources, the methodology and technology required for calibration, the verification process concerning the nearly simultaneous range capability, a description of the ranging system, and tracking strategy.

Navigation capability for an ion drive rendezvous with Halley's Comet

An analysis has been conducted in connection with plans for a study of Halley's Comet during its 1986 apparition. The use of low-thrust vehicles, utilizing an ion drive system, is being considered for a comet rendezvous mission. A preliminary trajectory for the Halley rendezvous mission calls for launch on June 20, 1982, followed by rendezvous on December 21, 1985. The navigation analysis described focuses on the terminal approach to Halley, the 60-day period preceding rendezvous. Navigation analysis assumptions are examined, taking into account navigation error sources, radio tracking, onboard optical data, earth-based comet observations, and orbit determination and guidance strategies. The preliminary mission design considers a rendezvous at approximately 56,000 km from the comet nucleus (6,000 km outside the dust envelope). Navigation performance is measured in terms of comet-relative position and velocity errors at encounter. Variations to the baseline navigation study provide illustrations concerning the close link between delivery accuracy and stochastic thrust errors.

Public service communications satellite

Health, education, public safety, and information transfer applications of public service communications satellites are discussed with particular attention to the use of communications satellites to improve rural health delivery. Health-care communications requirements are summarized. The communications system concept involves small inexpensive stationary, portable, and moving ground terminals which will provide communications between any two points in the U.S. with both fixed and moving terminals on a continuous 24-hour basis. User requirements, wavebands, and privacy techniques are surveyed.

Update on the development of the Space Shuttle main engine /as of June 20, 1978/

During the last year, significant progress was made toward the development of the Space Shuttle Main Engine which will provide propulsion for the Space Shuttle Orbiter Vehicle. Component and subsystem testing was conducted at the Rocketdyne Santa Susana Field Laboratory on combustion devices, turbomachinery, and the engine POGO suppression system. Engine testing continued at the National Space Technology Laboratories on both single engines and a three-engine cluster. As a result of these tests, hardware limitations were identified and design modifications were incorporated and evaluated by further testing. Current effort is being directed toward the delivery of the first flight engines and certification of the SSME for manned flight.
