Competing magnetic orders in quantum critical Sr 3 Ru 2 O 7

We investigated Sr 3 RuO 7 , a quantum critical metal that shows a metamagnetic quantum phase transition and electronic nematicity, through density functional calculations. These predict a ferromagnetic ground state in contrast to the experimentally observed paramagnetism, raising the question of competing magnetic states and associated fluctuations that may suppress magnetic order. We did a search to identify such low-energy antiferromagnetically ordered metastable states. We find that the lowest-energy antiferromagnetic state has a striped order. This corresponds to the E-type order that has been shown to be induced by Mn alloying. We also note significant transport anisotropy in this E-type ordered state. Furthermore, these results are discussed in relation to experimental observations.

Competition of three-dimensional magnetic phases in Ca2Ru1-xFexO4: A structural perspective

The crystalline and magnetic structures of Ca 2 Ru 1 - x Fe x O 4 ( x = 0.02 , 0.05, 0.08, and 0.12) have been studied using neutron and x-ray diffraction. The Fe-doping reduces the Ru-O bond length in both apical and planar directions. The smaller Ru( Fe ) O 6 octahedron leads to its reduced distortion. The P b c a space group is maintained in all the Fe dopings, so is the octahedral flattening. Warming has a similar effect on the lattice to that of the Fe doping in releasing the distorted octahedra but precipitates an abrupt octahedral elongation near the N e ' el temperature. Two competing antiferromagnetic orders, A - and B -centered phases have been observed. The Fe-doping-relaxed crystal structure prefers the latter to the former. As the doping increases, the B -centered phase continuously grows at the cost of the A -centered one and eventually replaces it at x = 0.12 . The absence of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations above the magnetic transition temperature and the three-dimensional magnetic correlation below the transition, together with the anomalous lattice response, point to an important role of orbital degree of freedom in driving the magnetic phase competition.

Antichiral spin order, its soft modes, and their hybridization with phonons in the topological semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Here we report the magnetic structure and spin excitations of Mn 3 Ge , a breathing kagome antiferromagnet with transport anomalies attributed to Weyl nodes. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we show the magnetic order is a k = 0 coplanar state belonging to a Γ 9 irreducible representation, which can be described as a perfect 120 ° antichiral structure with a moment of 2.2(1) μ B /Mn, superimposed with weak collinear ferromagnetism. Inelastic neutron scattering shows three collective Q = 0 excitations at Δ 1 = 2.9 ( 6 ) meV, Δ 2 = 14.6 ( 3 ) meV, and Δ 3 = 17.5 ( 3 ) meV. A field theory of Q ≈ 0 spin waves in triangular antiferromagnets with a 120 ° spin structure was used to classify these modes. The in-plane mode ( α ) is gapless, Δ 1 is the gap to a doublet of out-of-plane spin excitations ( β x , β y ), and Δ 2 , Δ 3 result from hybridization of optical phonons with magnetic excitations. While a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian including exchange interactions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and single-ion crystal field terms can describe aspects of the Mn-based magnetism, spin-wave damping [ Γ = 25 ( 8 ) meV] and the extended range of magnetic interactions indicate itinerant magnetism consistent with the transport anomalies.

Temperature-dependent electronic structure in a higher-order topological insulator candidate EuIn 2 As 2

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) have enticed enormous research interests owing to their novelty in supporting gapless states along the hinges of a crystal. Despite several theoretical predictions, enough experimental confirmation of the HOTI state in crystalline solids is still lacking. Here, it is shown that interplay between topology and magnetism can give rise to various magnetic topological states, including HOTI and axion insulator states. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with the first-principles calculations, we report a systematic study of the electronic structure and its evolution across the magnetic phase transition in EuIn 2 As 2 which possesses an antiferromagnetic ground state below 16 K. Antiferromagnetic EuIn 2 As 2 has been predicted to host both the axion insulator and the HOTI states. We directly observe the linearly dispersing holelike bands crossing the Fermi level and the change in their dispersion across the magnetic phase transition. Our paper points to EuIn 2 As 2 as being a promising material for the exploration of interplay between topology and magnetism.

Influence of hydrostatic pressure on hidden order, the Kondo lattice, and magnetism in URu 2 Si 2-x P x

Within the chemical substitution series URu 2 Si 2-x P x , there is an evolution in the ground-state behavior from hidden ordered (HO) for x ≲ 0.03, to Kondo lattice behavior with no ordering (NO) for 0.03 ≲ x ≲ 0.26, to antiferromagnetism (AFM-2) for 0.26 ≲ x ≲ 0.5 [A. Gallagher et al., Nat. Commun. 7, 10712 (2016); A. Gallagher et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 29, 024004 (2016)]. To better understand what factors control this behavior, temperature-dependent electrical resistivity measurements are performed for this series under applied pressures P up to 20.5 kbar. Specimens in the HO x region show similarities to the parent compound, where HO transforms into antiferromagnetism (AFM-1) at a critical pressure (P c ). P c decreases with increasing x and collapses towards P = 0 near x ≈ 0.03, suggesting that AFM-1 occurs at ambient pressure for this concentration. No pressure-induced phase transitions are observed in the NO x region and the AFM-2 state is only weakly suppressed by P. Measurements further reveal that AFM-1 and AFM-2 are distinct from each other. Calculations of the wave functions using the tight-binding Hartree-Fock approximation are performed and show (i) that the radial probability distributions for the phosphorus ions are more tightly bound than those for the silicon and (ii) that the energy difference between the orbitals decreases with increasing x. The cumulative effect of these two factors is that Si → P substitution decreases the hybridization strength, which correlates with the weakening of HO. At large x, additional effects such as electrical charge tuning also play an important role in determining the ground-state

High-field spin-flop state in green dioptase

The high-field magnetic properties and magnetic order of the gem mineral green dioptase Cu 6 [Si 6 O 18 ] .6 H 2 O have been studied by means of single-crystal neutron diffraction in magnetic fields up to 21 T and magnetization measurements up to 30 T. In zero field, the Cu 2+ moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the c axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the c axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at B*=12.2 T at 1.5 K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic X X Z spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around B*. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Zero-field magnetic ground state of EuMg 2 Bi 2

Layered trigonal EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to be a topological semimetal that hosts multiple Dirac points that may be gapped or split by the onset of magnetic order. In this study, we report zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements versus temperature χ ( T ) of EuMg 2 Bi 2 that show the intraplane ordering is ferromagnetic ( Eu 2 + , S = 7 / 2 ) with the moments aligned in the a b plane while adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically (i.e., A-type antiferromagnetism) below the Néel temperature.

Origin of the magnetic and orbital ordering in α-Sr 2 CrO 4

Motivated by recent experimental progress in transition metal oxides with the K 2 NiF 4 structure, in this study we investigate the magnetic and orbital ordering in α-Sr 2 CrO 4 . Using first principles calculations, first we derive a three-orbital Hubbard model, which reproduces the ab initio band structure near the Fermi level. The unique reverse splitting of t 2g orbitals in α-Sr 2 CrO 4 , with the 3d 2 electronic configuration for the Cr 4+ oxidation state, opens up the possibility of orbital ordering in this material. Using real-space Hartree-Fock for multi-orbital systems, we constructed the ground state phase diagram for the two dimensional compound α-Sr 2 CrO 4 . We found stable ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, antiferro-orbital, and staggered orbital stripe ordering in robust regions of the phase diagram. Furthermore, using the density matrix renormalization group method for two-leg ladders with the realistic hopping parameters of α-Sr 2 CrO 4 , we explore magnetic and orbital ordering for experimentally relevant interaction parameters. Again, we find a clear signature of antiferromagnetic spin ordering along with antiferro-orbital ordering at moderate to large Hubbard interaction strength. We also explore the orbital-resolved density of states with Lanczos, predicting insulating behavior for the compound α-Sr 2 CrO 4 , in agreement with experiments. Finally, an intuitive understanding of the results is provided based on a hierarchy between orbitals, with d xy driving the spin order, while electronic repulsion and the effective one dimensionality of the movement within the d xz and d yz orbitals driving the orbital order.

Study of spin symmetry in the doped t-J model using infinite projected entangled pair states

We study the two-dimensional t-J model on a square lattice using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS). At small doping, multiple orders, such as antiferromagnetic order, stripe order and superconducting order, are intertwined or compete with each other. We demonstrate the role of spin symmetry at small doping by either imposing SU(2) spin symmetry or its U(1) subgroup in the iPEPS ansatz, thereby excluding or allowing spontaneous spin-symmetry breaking, respectively, in the thermodynamic limit. From a detailed comparison of our simulations, we provide evidence that stripe order is pinned by long-range antiferromagnetic order. We also find SU(2) iPEPS, enforcing a spin-singlet state, yields a uniform charge distribution and favors d-wave singlet pairing.

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.

Defect-driven ferrimagnetism and hidden magnetization in MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) materials are promising antiferromagnetic topological insulators in which field-driven ferromagnetism is predicted to cause a transition between axion insulator and Weyl semimetallic states. However, the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn/Bi antisite defects and the main Mn layer can reduce the low-field magnetization, and it has been shown that such defects are more prevalent in the structurally identical magnetic insulator MnSb 2 Te 4 (MST). We use high-field magnetization measurements to show that the magnetization of MBT and MST occur in stages and full saturation requires fields of ~60 T. As a consequence, the low-field magnetization plateau state in MBT, where many determinations of the quantum anomalous Hall state are studied, actually consists of ferrimagnetic septuple blocks containing both uniform and staggered magnetization components.

Intertwined charge, spin, and pairing orders in doped iron ladders

Motivated by recent experimental progress on iron-based ladder compounds, we study the doped two-orbital Hubbard model for the two-leg ladder BaFe2S3. The model is constructed by using ab initio hopping parameters and the ground state properties are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the (π,0) magnetic ordering at half filling, with ferromagnetic rungs and antiferromagnetic legs, becomes incommensurate upon hole doping. Moreover, depending on the strength of the Hubbard U coupling, other magnetic patterns, such as (0,π), are also stabilized. We found that the binding energy for two holes becomes negative for intermediate Hubbard interaction strength, indicating hole pairing. Due to the crystal-field split among orbitals, the holes primarily reside in one orbital, with the other one remaining half filled. This resembles orbital selective Mott states. The formation of tight hole pairs continues with increasing hole density, as long as the magnetic order remains antiferromagnetic in one direction. The study of pair-pair correlations indicates the dominance of the intraorbital spin-singlet channel, as opposed to other pairing channels. Although in a range of hole doping pairing correlations decay slowly, our results can also be interpreted as corresponding to a charge density wave made of pairs, a precursor of eventual superconductivity after interladder couplings are included. Such a scenario of intertwined orders has been extensively discussed before in the cuprates, and our results suggest a similar physics could exist in ladder iron-based superconductors. Finally, we also show that a robust Hund's coupling is needed for pairing to occur.

Implications of second harmonic generation for hidden order in Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2

Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with I4/mmm crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group CAmca with associated magnetic point group mmm1'. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group 4/mm'm' that coexists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal c axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent with the data.

Quantum magnetism of iron-based ladders: Blocks, spirals, and spin flux

Motivated by increasing experimental evidence of exotic magnetism in low-dimensional iron-based materials, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of magnetic states of the multiorbital Hubbard ladder in the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). Here, the model we used is relevant for iron-based compounds of the AFe 2 X 3 family (where A=Cs, Rb, Ba, K are alkali metals and X=S, Se are chalcogenides). To reduce computational effort, and obtain almost exact numerical results in the ladder geometry, we utilize a low-energy description of the Hubbard model in the OSMP—the generalized Kondo-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Our main result is the doping vs interaction magnetic phase diagram. We reproduce the experimental findings on the AFe 2 X 3 materials, especially the exotic block magnetism of BaFe 2 Se 3 (antiferromagnetically coupled 2×2 ferromagnetic islands of the ↑↑↓↓ form). As in recent studies of the chain geometry, we also unveil block magnetism beyond the 2×2 pattern (with block sizes varying as a function of the electron doping) and also an interaction-induced frustrated block-spiral state (a spiral order of rigidly rotating ferromagnetic islands). Moreover, we predict new phases beyond the one-dimensional system: a robust regime of phase separation close to half filling, incommensurate antiferromagnetism for weak interaction, and a quantum spin-flux phase of staggered plaquette spin currents at intermediate doping. Finally, exploiting the bonding/antibonding band occupations, we provide an intuitive physical picture giving insight into the structure of the phase diagram.

Evolution of magnetic interactions in Sb-substituted MnBi 2 Te 4

The Mn(Bi 1–x Sb x ) 2 Te 4 series is purported to span from an antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator at x = 0 to a trivial AF insulator at x = 1. Here we report on neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic interactions across this series. All compounds measured possess ferromagnetic (FM) triangular layers and we find a crossover from AF to FM interlayer coupling near x = 1 for our samples. The large spin gap at x = 0 closes rapidly and the average FM exchange interactions within the triangular layer increase with Sb substitution. Similar to a previous study of MnBi 2 Te 4 , we find severe spectral broadening which increases dramatically across the compositional series. In addition to broadening, we observe an additional sharp magnetic excitation in MnSb 2 Te 4 that may indicate the development of local magnetic modes originating from antisite disorder between Mn and Sb sublattices. Here, the results suggest that both substitutional and antisite disorder contribute substantially to the magnetism in Mn(Bi 1–x Sb x ) 2 Te 4 .

Dynamical vertex approximation for many-electron systems with spontaneously broken SU(2) symmetry

We generalize the formalism of the dynamical vertex approximation (DΓA)—a diagrammatic extension of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT)—to treat magnetically ordered phases. To this aim, we start by concisely illustrating the many-electron formalism for performing ladder resummations of Feynman diagrams in systems with broken SU(2) symmetry associated to ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AF) order. We then analyze the algorithmic simplifications introduced by taking the local approximation of the two-particle irreducible vertex functions in the Bethe-Salpeter equations, which defines the ladder implementation of DΓA for magnetic systems. The relation of this assumption with the DMFT limit of large coordination-number/high dimensions is explicitly discussed. As a last step, we derive the expression for the ladder DΓA self-energy in the FM- and AF-ordered phases of the Hubbard model. The physics emerging in the AF-ordered case is explicitly illustrated by means of approximated calculations based on a static mean-field input for DΓA equations. The results obtained capture fundamental aspects of both metallic and insulating ground states of two-dimensional antiferromagnets, providing a reliable compass for future, more extensive applications of our approach. Furthermore, possible routes to further develop diagrammatic-based treatments of magnetic phases in correlated electron systems are briefly outlined in the Conclusions.

Hydrostatic pressure effect on the Co-based honeycomb magnet BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2

Here the honeycomb antiferromagnet BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 , in which small in-plane magnetic fields (H1 ≈ 0.26T and H2 ≈ 0.52T at T = 1.8 K < T N ≈ 5.4K) induce two magnetic phase transitions, has attracted attention as a possible candidate material for the realization of Kitaev physics based on the 3d element Co 2+ . Here, we report on the change in the transition temperature T N and the critical fields H1 and H2 of BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 with hydrostatic pressure up to ~20 kbar, as determined from magnetization and specific heat measurements. Within this pressure range, a marginal increase in the magnetic ordering temperature is observed. At the same time, the critical fields are changed significantly (up to ~25 –35%). Specifically, we find that H1 is increased with hydrostatic pressure, i.e., the antiferromagnetic state is stabilized, whereas H2, which was previously associated with a transition into a proposed Kitaev spin-liquid state, decreases with increasing pressure. We discuss to what extent these results are compatible with suggested models with sizable third-nearest-neighbor exchange. Overall, the results put constraints on the magnetic models that are used to describe the low-temperature magnetic properties of BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 .

Extraordinary anisotropic magnetoresistance in CaMnO 3 /CaIrO 3 heterostructures

The realization of four-fold anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in novel 3d-5d heterostructures has boosted major efforts in antiferromagnetic spintronics. However, despite the potential of incorporating strong spin-orbit coupling, only small AMR signals have been detected thus far, prompting a search for new mechanisms to enhance the signal. In this study on CaMnO 3 /CaIrO 3 heterostructures, we report a unique dual-four-fold symmetric 70% AMR; a signal two orders of magnitude larger than previously observed in similar systems. We find that one order is enhanced by tuning a large biaxial anisotropy through octahedral tilts of similar sense in the constituent layers, while the second order is triggered by a spin-flop transition in a nearly Mott-type phase. Dynamics between these two phenomena as evidenced by the step-like AMR and a superimposed biaxial-anisotropy-induced AMR capture a subtle interplay of pseudospin coupling with the lattice and external magnetic field. Furthermore, our study shows that a combination of charge-transfer, interlayer coupling, and a spin-flop transition can yield a giant AMR relevant for sensing and antiferromagnetic memory applications.
