U M subshell X-ray emission spectroscopy of uranium dioxide: the effect of excitation energy

There are very great differences between the non-resonant U M subshell X-ray Emission Spectra of Uranium Dioxide generated with low and high-energy excitation. Additionally, these different spectra are each supported by theoretical constructs. It will be shown that the differences between these experimental spectra can be reconciled and the utility of both theoretical approaches confirmed, including the use of FEFF in the low energy and high-energy regimes.

Analyzing the effect of pressure on the properties of point defects in $\gamma\mathrm{U–Mo}$ through atomistic simulations

Uranium–molybdenum (U–Mo) alloys in monolithic fuel foil are the primary candidate for the conversion of high-performance research reactors in the USA. Monolithic fuel is utilized in a plate-type design with a zirconium diffusion barrier and aluminum cladding. These fuel types are unique in that they contain no plenum for the release of fission gases, which, in conjunction with the aluminum cladding, can lead to large stress states within the fuel. The nature of how fundamental processes of radiation damage, including the evolution of point defects, under such stresses occur is unknown. In this work, we present molecular dynamics simulations of the formation energy of point defects under applied stress. We report this work will allow for the implementation of stress-dependent microstructural evolution models of nuclear fuels, including those for both fission gas bubble growth and creep, which are critical to ensure the stable and predictable behavior of research reactor fuels.

Spontaneously broken (-1)-form U(1) symmetries

Spontaneous breaking of symmetries leads to universal phenomena. We extend this notion to(-1) ( − 1 ) -form U(1) symmetries. The spontaneous breaking is diagnosed by a dependence of the vacuum energy on a constant background field\theta θ , which can be probed by the topological susceptibility. This leads to a reinterpretation of the Strong CP problem as arising from a spontaneously broken instantonic symmetry in QCD. We discuss how known solutions to the problem are unified in this framework and explore some, so far unsuccessful, attempts to find new solutions.

Beam-ion Studies in NSTX and NSTX-U (Final Technical Report)

The confinement of high energy "fast ions" is crucial for the success of magnetic fusion as a practical energy source. The research performed by UC Irvine on NSTX and NSTX-U provided new information about this important topic in the configuration known as a "spherical tokamak." Injected neutral beams provided the fast ions (also known as "beam ions"). There were five overarching goals of the research. One objective was to measure the confinement of beam ions in order to ascertain if they were accomplishing their desired purpose of transferring their energy to the bulk plasma. A second goal was to better understand instabilities that are driven unstable by the fast ions. A related goal was to use the similarities and differences between NSTX and the DIII-D conventional tokamak to better understand the fast-ion driven instabilities. A fourth goal was to develop new instruments to measure fast ions and techniques that facilitate analysis of the data. The fifth objective was to measure and understand acceleration of beam ions by RF waves. Much was accomplished in all of these five areas. In the first, it was shown that the large magnetic moment of the beam ions did not harm confinement but instabilities known as the "sawtooth" and "long-lived mode" do. In the second area, much attention was devoted to the fast-ion instabilities known as "Alfvén eigenmodes." In particular, Alfvén eigenmode "avalanches" can cause ~ 30% of the fast ions to be lost in a single explosive burst. The comparative studies with DIII-D showed that an instability discovered on NSTX is also important in conventional tokamaks. In the fourth category, several instruments were developed, a number of effects that complicate interpretation of the data were understood, and progress toward a new method to infer the fast-ion distribution function from the data was made. In the fifth category, the measured profile of accelerated fast ions was initially much broader than theoretical predictions but subsequent improvements in the theoretical modeling achieved good agreement with the data.

Distribution of Infiltration in the 216-U-10, 216-B-3 Pond, and 216-T-4 Pond Systems 1944-1997

A modeling system to simulate fate and transport of contaminant plumes in groundwater beneath the Central Plateau to support the Cumulative Impact Evaluation (CIE) and Composite Analysis (CA) is being developed. The CIE will evaluate the cumulative effect of multiple Central Plateau radiological and chemical sources on groundwater quality. This will enable cleanup decisions to be evaluated in the context of all Central Plateau waste sites and existing groundwater conditions. The purpose of this Environmental Calculation File (ECF) is to partition the infiltration of wastewater and contaminant inventory between the main pond and each expansion lobe of the 216-B-3 Pond system, and to partition the infiltration of wastewater and contaminant inventory between the ditches and ponds of the 216-U-10 Pond and 216-T-4 Pond systems.

Thermochemically-Informed Mass Transport Model for Zr in U-Zr Fuel

Recent improvements to the coupled Thermochimica-MOOSE/BISON code system have enabled efficient calculations of species transport based on direct evaluation of composition and temperature dependent chemical potentials of the species. This presents an alternative to the traditional approach to species transport in nuclear fuels, which has been to employ a diffusion formulation that combines concentration-gradient driven Fickian diffusion with a Soret term based on a heat of transport fit to experimental data. Here we describe the application of the coupled code system to the diffusion of Zr in U-Zr metallic fuel. New classes implemented in BISON to solve this problem are documented. The Zr concentration profile after 50 years of diffusion is found to be strongly dependent on the assumptions made pertaining how to mobility is calculated in multi-phase regions of the fuel element. Two assumptions are compared (simple averaging of mobilities and using the majority phase mobility), and good qualitative agreement with experimental measurements is obtained using the majority phase assumption.

Quantifying Uncertainty in All-to-All Estimates of Space Object Conjunction Probabilities using U-Statistics

Predicting space object conjunctions is inherently probabilistic due to initial state and orbit model uncertainty. A commonly considered Monte Carlo estimator of the conjunction probability is the ’all-to-all’ estimator. Given independent random samples of the trajectories of both objects, the estimator is the percentage of all pairs of trajectories that result in a conjunction. Intuitively, the all-to-all estimator is the best possible estimator of the conjunction probability since it considers all pairs of Monte Carlo samples. However, its distribution is not available in closed-form, which limits its use in practice and makes this intuition difficult to make rigorous. In this paper, the all-to-all estimator is identified as a U-statistic, which implies that it has several favorable properties. Specifically, the estimator is the minimum variance unbiased estimator of the conjunction probability and is asymptotically Gaussian distributed. An approximate confidence interval for the conjunction probability is obtained from an estimate of the asymptotic Gaussian distribution. We show how to efficiently compute the confidence interval and demonstrate that the interval has the nominal coverage level. The confidence intervals are also seen to be narrower than those based on the commonly-used each-to-each estimator. Furthermore, the all-to-all estimator is shown to allow different Monte Carlo sample sizes, whereas the each-to-each estimator requires equal sample sizes.

Scrape-off layer stability, turbulence and transport in MAST-U (Final Report)

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supported work at Lodestar Research Corporation under grant DE-SC0019270 is summarized in this final report. The research conducted under this grant explored the properties of the edge plasma in spherical torus magnetic fusion devices. Harnessing the energy that is released in fusion reactions would provide a safe and abundant source of power to meet the growing energy needs of the world population. The edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) region of fusion plasmas is the region where the hot core plasma transitions to a cooler surrounding boundary plasma. The properties of this boundary plasma determine how interactions with material surfaces will impact both the overall device performance and the lifetime of crucial components such as the walls of the device chamber and other hardware. The research carried out studied filamentary plasma instabilities and turbulent transport in the edge and SOL of the MAST U spherical torus.

Compare $\overline{ν}$ parameterizations for 235 U(n,f) with fitted fission barriers

In this document, we compare observables computed with CGMF to some available data for 235 U(n,f), to investigate the multi-chance fission probabilities (fission barriers from CoH were refit) and two TKE parametrization. The four parametrizations include i) default CGMF multi-chance fission probabilities with bends in TKE for all fission chances, ii) default CGMF multi-chance fission probabilities with a TKE bend in only first-chance fission iii) refitted multi-chance fission probabilities with bends in TKE for all fission chances, and iv) refitted multi-chance fission probabilities with a bend in TKE for only first-chance fission. In all figures where the four parametrizations are on the same plot, the ones with bends in TKE for all chance fission are in black, with only first-chance bend in red, the default multi-chance fission probabilities are dashed and the new multi-chance fission probabilities are the solid lines.

UNESE Phase 2: Injection and measurement of gaseous tracers at U-12p Tunnel

In June 2018 radioactive ( 37 Ar and 127 Xe) and stable (SF 6 ) tracers were injected into the chimney of the Disko Elm underground nuclear explosion, located in the U-12p tunnel complex. After the injection sampling was performed from locations within the tunnel, a borehole drilled from the surface, and from the surface of the mesa. Additionally, the 127 Xe activity within the chimney was continuously monitored for two months after the injection. While none of the injected radiotracers were detected in the monitoring borehole, elevated levels of 39 Ar (an activation product produced by underground nuclear explosions) were detected and quantified in each sample.
