Tuning Exciton Emission via Ferroelectric Polarization at a Heterogeneous Interface between a Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenide and a Perovskite Oxide Membrane

Here we demonstrate the integration of a thin BaTiO 3 (BTO) membrane with monolayer MoSe 2 in a dual gate device that enables in-situ manipulation of the BTO ferroelectric polarization with a voltage pulse. While two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer remarkable adaptability, their hybrid integration with other families of functional materials beyond the realm of 2D materials has been challenging. Released functional oxide membranes offer a solution for 2D/3D integration via stacking. 2D TMD excitons can serve as a local probe of the ferroelectric polarization in BTO at a heterogeneous interface. Using photoluminescence (PL) of MoSe 2 excitons to optically readout the doping level, we find that the relative population of charge carriers in MoSe 2 depends sensitively on the ferroelectric polarization. This finding points to a promising avenue for future-generations versatile sensing devices with high sensitivity, fast read-out, and diverse applicability for advanced signal processing.

Tuning Chiral Anomaly Signature in a Dirac Semimetal via Fast-Ion Implantation

Cd 3 As 2 is a Dirac semimetal that hosts a chiral anomaly, functioning as a platform to realize energy applications. We use fast-ion implantation to enhance the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (NLMR)─signature of a chiral anomaly─in Nb-doped Cd 3 As 2 thin films. High-energy ion implantation is used to investigate semiconductors and nuclear materials but is rarely employed to study topological materials. We use electrical transport and transmission electron microscopy to characterize the NLMR and crystallinity of Nb-doped Cd 3 As 2 . We find surface-doped thin films display a maximum NLMR around B = 7 T and bulk-doped thin films display a maximum over B = 9 T─all while maintaining crystallinity. This is more than a 100% relative enhancement of the maximum NLMR compared to pristine Cd 3 As 2 . As a result, our work demonstrates the potential of high-energy ion implantation as a practical route to explore chiralitronic properties in topological semimetals.

Tuning Anisotropic Optical Properties of Inorganic and Hybrid Organic–Inorganic MXenes via Topochemical Surface Modification

Surface groups are central to the properties of MXenes, yet their role in optical anisotropy remains largely unexplored. Here, we use a topochemical route to synthesize single crystals of stacked Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 and hybrid organic–inorganic MXenes (h-MXenes) with lateral sizes of 38–75 μm, rotational registry, and tunable interlayer spacing. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy shows that topochemical substitution generates mixed amido, imido, and hydride surface motifs, which modify the electronic structure of the Ti 3 C 2 inorganic core. Imaging spectroscopic ellipsometry with micron-scale spatial resolution enables reconstruction of the complex dielectric tensor of individual multilayer crystals. Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 exhibits a type-II hyperbolicity above 930 nm, whereas h-MXenes do not display hyperbolicity within the measured 300–1700 nm window, instead showing reduced in-plane conductivity, suppressed out-of-plane light absorption, and a chain-length-dependent blue shift of a near-infrared absorption feature. These results demonstrate topochemical surface modification as a direct handle for engineering MXenes as surface-programmable optical media.

Polymer Hole Transport Material Functional Group Tuning for Improved Perovskite Solar Cell Performance

As lead halide perovskites (LHPs) continue to achieve success as a light-harvesting material in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), exploring and understanding other materials in the device stack become increasingly important. Particularly, selection of suitable hole transport materials (HTMs) that demonstrate high performance and stability is imperative in the design of P-I-N PSCs. Presented here are a family of 12 structurally related polymers based on either fluorene or carbazole main chains with select aromatic side groups that introduce tunable properties for use in PSCs. How properties such as the highest occupied molecular orbital energy level, conductivity, glass-transition temperature, and wettability of the HTM affect the PSC performance is explored. Devices that incorporate the polymer HTMs perform well relative to PTAA in benchmark P-I-N PSC architectures while exhibiting similar or superior stability under accelerated aging studies. The relative synthetic simplicity and resultant performance of the HTMs in PSCs coupled with the ability to customize properties with different functional groups demonstrates the potential of this family of HTMs for a variety of LHP materials.

Tuning the Quantum Dot (QD)/Mediator Interface for Optimal Efficiency of QD-Sensitized Near-Infrared-to-Visible Photon Upconversion Systems

Lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dots (QDs) have shown promising performance as a sensitizer in infrared-to-visible photon upconversion systems. To investigate the key design rules, we compare three PbS-sensitized upconversion systems using three mediator molecules with the same tetracene triplet acceptor at different distances from the QD. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we directly measure the triplet energy-transfer rates and efficiencies from the QD to the mediator and from the mediator to the emitter. With increasing distance between the mediator and PbS QD, the efficiency of the first triplet energy transfer from the QD to the mediator decreases because of a decrease in the rate of this triplet energy-transfer step, while the efficiency of the second triplet energy transfer from the mediator to the emitter increases because of a reduction in the QD-induced mediator triplet state decay. The latter effect is a result of the slow rate constant of the second triplet energy-transfer process, which is 3 orders of magnitude slower than the diffusion-limited value. The combined results lead to a net decrease of the steady-state upconversion quantum yield with distance, which could be predicted by our kinetic model. Our result shows that the QD/mediator interface affects both the first and second triplet energy transfer processes in the photon upconversion system, and the QD/mediator distance has an opposite effect on the efficiencies of the first and second triplet energy transfer. Lastly, these findings provide important insight for the further rational improvement of the overall efficiency of QD-based upconversion systems.

Tuning Irreversible Magnetoresistance in Pr 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 Film via Octahedral Rotation

Herein, the oxygen octahedral rotation around the out-of-plane axis is explored to study its effect on metastable status, magnetic cluster glass in manganite. The antiphase rotation around the out-of-plane axis (TiO 6 α Ο α Ο c – ) of SrTiO 3 enhances the Mn–O bond anisotropy along in-plane and out-of-plane directions and weakens the ferromagnetic interactions in a 12 nm Pr 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 film on the (001) SrTiO 3 substrate, which together promote the formation of magnetic cluster-glassiness and enlarges the irreversible magnetoresistance (MR) effect with enhanced relaxation time of charge carriers. The effect of TiO 6 α Ο α Ο c – in the SrTiO 3 substrate on material properties is obvious with a large irreversible MR effect for thin films, which fades away with the increase in film thickness. At 10 K, the irreversible MR is 0.91 for the 12 nm film and 0.22 for the 30 nm film. This work extends current understanding on interfacial coupling to metastable status and could help explore other systems in the perovskite structure with octahedral rotation.
