Complex Correlation Kohn-T Method of Calculating Total and Elastic Cross Sections: Electron-Hydrogen Elastic Scattering - Part 1

We report on the first part of a study of electron-hydrogen scattering, using a method which allows for the ab initio calculation of total and elastic cross sections at higher energies. In its general form the method uses complex 'radial' correlation functions, in a (Kohn) T-matrix formalism. The titled method, abbreviated Complex Correlation Kohn T (CCKT) method, is reviewed, in the context of electron-hydrogen scattering, including the derivation of the equation for the (complex) scattering function, and the extraction of the scattering information from the latter. The calculation reported here is restricted to S-waves in the elastic region, where the correlation functions can be taken, without loss of generality, to be real. Phase shifts are calculated using Hylleraas-type correlation functions with up to 95 terms. Results are rigorous lower bounds; they are in general agreement with those of Schwartz, but they are more accurate and outside his error bounds at a couple of energies,

Obtaining Reliable Predictions of Terrestrial Energy Coupling From Real-Time Solar Wind Measurement

The first draft of a manuscript titled "Variable time delays in the propagation of the interplanetary magnetic field" has been completed, for submission to the Journal of Geophysical Research. In the preparation of this manuscript all data and analysis programs had been updated to the highest temporal resolution possible, at 16 seconds or better. The program which computes the "measured" IMF propagation time delays from these data has also undergone another improvement. In another significant development, a technique has been developed in order to predict IMF phase plane orientations, and the resulting time delays, using only measurements from a single satellite at L1. The "minimum variance" method is used for this computation. Further work will be done on optimizing the choice of several parameters for the minimum variance calculation.

Power Quality and Reliability Project

One area where universities and industry can link is in the area of power systems reliability and quality - key concepts in the commercial, industrial and public sector engineering environments. Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) has established a collaborative relationship with the University of'Texas at Arlington (UTA), NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC), and EP&C Engineering and Technology Group (EP&C) a small disadvantage business that specializes in power quality and engineering services. The primary goal of this collaboration is to facilitate the development and implementation of a Strategic Integrated power/Systems Reliability and Curriculum Enhancement Program. The objectives of first phase of this work are: (a) to develop a course in power quality and reliability, (b) to use the campus of Prairie View A&M University as a laboratory for the study of systems reliability and quality issues, (c) to provide students with NASA/EPC shadowing and Internship experience. In this work, a course, titled "Reliability Analysis of Electrical Facilities" was developed and taught for two semesters. About thirty seven has benefited directly from this course. A laboratory accompanying the course was also developed. Four facilities at Prairie View A&M University were surveyed. Some tests that were performed are (i) earth-ground testing, (ii) voltage, amperage and harmonics of various panels in the buildings, (iii) checking the wire sizes to see if they were the right size for the load that they were carrying, (iv) vibration tests to test the status of the engines or chillers and water pumps, (v) infrared testing to the test arcing or misfiring of electrical or mechanical systems.

The Crystal and Molecular Structure of Acetatochlorobis(4-methylpyridine)oxovanadium (IV)

The crystal and molecular structure of the title compound, VOCl(O2CCH3)(4-CH3C5H4N)2, has been determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. The material crystallizes in the space group P 1(bar) (#2) with a = 7.822(2), b = 8.023(l), c = 14.841(2) Angstroms, alpha = 99.73(l), beta = 91.41(l), and gamma = 117.13(l). The coordination geometry around the vanadium is a highly distorted octahedron. The molecule is remarkable for being a monomeric oxovanadium (IV) carboxylate. A generalized synthetic strategy is proposed for the preparation of oxovanadium (IV) monomers.

A Synoptic Study of an X-Ray Nova in Outburst (ADP 2000)

This ADP grant funds and ongoing RXTE Cycle 6 and Cycle 7 project with the same title. The ongoing RXTE project proposes an aggressive campaign of multiwavelength observations of the first X-ray nova that rises above an X-ray intensity of 1 Crab. The RXTE pointed X-ray observations are central to this observing campaign, which includes also very extensive optical and radio observations in both hemispheres. This is a Target of Opportunity program; that is, it is triggered by the RXTE Project Scientist only upon the appearance of such a bright X-ray nova.

Verification and Validation of Simulation Models for High-Speed Flow Fields

This paper is largely based on the paper titled "Guide to Credible Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations (Invited)" (AIAA Paper 95-2225). The significance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations depends solely on their credibility. A customer of CFD products -- simulations and software -- expects that these products are credible for the intended use. Simulation model verification and validation are critical in establishing the credibility of simulations and in certifying simulation software. The only thing that matters in establishing the credibility is uncertainty, not veracity or validity. The sensitivity-uncertainty analysis is the key to the establishment of this credibility. Assessing the credibility of complex simulation results poses a significant challenge. Terminology, concepts, framework, and guidelines are presented for addressing this challenge. Verification assesses whether the problem is solved correctly and estimates the level of computational accuracy of simulations; validation determines whether the right problem is solved and assesses the level of validity of the simulation model by estimating the degree to which simulations accurately represent reality. These concepts and the related guidelines are discussed with examples from high-speed flow fields.
