Amplifier for signal from thin film transducer

Electronic circuitry is devised to raise low level signal from platinum film type transducer to sufficient amplitude to trigger oscilloscope or time interval counter. Circuit can be used wherever it is necessary to raise level of low amplitude, low impedance positive polarity pulse source to a 5 or 6 volt level.

Unsupported thin film beam splitter

Multilayer beam splitter system yielding nearly equal broadband infrared reflectance and transmittance in the 5 to 50 micron spectral region has been developed which will significantly reduce size and cost of light path compensating devices in infrared spectral instruments.

Thin-film ultraviolet detector and spectrometer

Typical metal-insulator-metal detector device is formed on quartz substrate. Base electrode is 3 to 6 nm aluminum layer, overcoated with 3 to 6 nm aluminum oxide or aluminum nitride, and capped with counter electrode of gold, lead, magnesium, or aluminum. Photoelectric yield data are given for Al-AlN-Au structure.

Investigation of single crystal ferrite thin films

Materials suitable for use in magnetic bubble domain memories were developed for aerospace applications. Practical techniques for the preparation of such materials in forms required for fabrication of computer memory devices were considered. The materials studied were epitaxial films of various compositions of the gallium-substituted yttrium gadolinium iron garnet system. The major emphasis was to determine their bubble properties and the conditions necessary for growing uncracked, high quality films.

Thin film thermoelectric devices as thermal control coatings: A study

Peltier effect, Thomson effect, and Seeback effect are utilized in design of thermal control coating that serves as versatile means for controlling heat absorbed and radiated by surface. Coatings may be useful in extreme temperature environment enclosures or as heat shields.

Investigation of substrate-mounted thin-film meteoroid sensors for use in large area impact experiments

Two types of sensor designs were investigated: (1)a polysulfone dielectric film with vapor-deposited aluminum and gold sensor plates, bonded to a relatively thick aluminum substrate, and (2) an aluminum oxide (A1203) dielectric layer prepared on an aluminum substrate by anodization, with a layer of vapor-deposited aluminum providing one sensor plate and the substrate serving as the other plate. In the first design, specimens were prepared which indicate the state of the art for application of this type of sensor for elements of a meteoroid detection system having an area as large as 10 sq M. Techniques were investigated for casting large-area polysulfone films on the surface of water and for transferring the films from the water. Methods of preparing sensors by layering of films, the deposition of capacitor plates, and sensor film-to-substrate bonding, as well as techniques for making electrical connections to the capacitor plates, were studied.

Thermoelectric thin film thermal coating systems

Derivation of the fluid loop temperature profile for a model with thermoelectric devices (TED) attached is developed as a function of position, incident radiation intensity, input fluid loop temperature and TED current. The associated temperature of the radiator is also developed so that the temperature difference across the TED can be determined for each position. The temperature difference is used in determining optimum operating conditions and available generated electrical power.

Superconductivity in thin films of the Mo-Re system.

A series of Mo-Re alloy films has been prepared by sputtering from a composite molybdenum and rhenium cathode. These films were deposited in an ultra-high purity environment onto sapphire substrates which were held at temperatures ranging from 400 to 1300 C. Maximum transition temperatures observed were 15 K which is significantly greater than the highest reported bulk values. Critical current and field characteristics also were found to be considerably greater in the films compared to corresponding bulk samples. Upper critical fields of over 100 kOe were measured. These enhanced properties are discussed in relation to the structural characteristics of the sputtered films.

Method of measuring the thickness of radioactive thin films

Thickness monitor consists of proportional X-ray counter coupled to pulse counting system, copper filter over face of counter, rotatable collimator containing radioactive source, and rotatable shutter. Monitor can be used as integral part of neutron generator. It has been used to measure titanium tritide film thicknesses from 0.1 to 30 micrometers.
