Synthesis of diamino terminated poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomers as reactive intermediates in copolymer systems

Reactive diamino terminated oligomers of pre-determined molecular weights can be prepared by either of two synthetic routes depending upon the compound used to introduce the amine functionality. After characterization by spectroscopic and thermal methods, these oligomers can be used in several post-reactions to yield novel block and segmented copolymer systems. A potential application for these poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomers exists in the curing or co-curing of epoxy resins for improving toughness. They can also be used to prepare toughened bismaleimide systems as well as producing copolymers with improved solvent resistance, especially with respect to chlorinated solvents.

Closed-form recursive formula for an optimal tracker with terminal constraints

Feedback control laws are derived for a class of optimal finite time tracking problems with terminal constraints. Analytical solutions are obtained for the feedback gain and the closed-loop response trajectory. Such formulations are expressed in recursive forms so that a real-time computer implementation becomes feasible. An example involving the feedback slewing of a flexible spacecraft is given to illustrate the validity and usefulness of the formulations.

Global system data bus using the Digital Autonomous Terminal Access Communication protocol

Modern digital avionic systems with distributed processing require networking to connect the many elements. Digital Autonomous Terminal Access Communication (DATAC) is one of many such networks. DATAC has been implemented on the Transport Systems Research Vehicle (TSRV), a Boeing 737 aircraft operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Advanced Transport Operating Systems Program Office (ATOPS). This paper presents the TSRV implementation of the DATAC bus, a description of the DATAC system, a synchronization mechanism, details of data flow throughout the system, and a discussion of the modes available with DATAC. Numerous flight tests have been conducted using DATAC as the only means of communication between systems with outstanding results. DATAC is now an integral part of the TSRV and is expected to satisfy near term as well as future requirements for growth and flexibility.

RCS of a coated circular waveguide terminated by a perfect conductor

The radar cross section (RCS) of a circular waveguide terminated by a perfect electric conductor is calculated by the geometrical theory of diffraction for the rim diffraction and by a physical optics approximation for the interior irradiation. The interior irradiation is generally more than 10 dB higher than the rim diffraction for a/lambda equal to or greater than 1 (a is the waveguide radius, lambda is the free-space wavelength). At low frequencies (a/lambda about 1), the interior irradiation can be significantly reduced over a broad range of incident angle if the interior waveguide wall is coated with a thin layer (1 percent of the radius) of lossy magnetic material. Our theoretical prediction is confirmed by measurements. At higher frequencies (a/lambda about 3), a thin layer of coating is effective for the case of near axial incidence, provided that a good transition of the TE(11) mode near the waveguide opening to the HE(11) mode inside the waveguide is made. A thicker layer of coating is required for the RCS reduction over wider incident angle.

Styrene-terminated polysulfone oligomers as matrix material for graphite reinforced composites - An initial study

Results pertaining to graphite reinforced composites containing styrene-terminated oligomers as the matrix material are summarized. The processing parameters are determined and the properties of the resulting composite are evaluated. In terms of solvent impregnation techniques, CH2Cl2 is the preferred solvent due to its easy removal during the prepreg drying and consolidation steps.

Satellite ground-terminal user simulation

Realistic simulation of satellite communication systems and evaluation of satellite networking schemes require emulation of the systems's users. A laboratory model of a Ka-band satellite-switched time-division multiple-access (SS-TDMA) communication network, referred to as the System Integration, Test, and Evaluation (SITE) project, uses special bit-error-rate (BER) test sets to simulate the transmitting and receiving users of a communication network. The bit-error-rate test sets contain circuit boards that can be modified to create a variety of interfaces to satellite system ground terminals.

A traveling-salesman-based approach to aircraft scheduling in the terminal area

An efficient algorithm is presented, based on the well-known algorithm for the traveling salesman problem, for scheduling aircraft arrivals into major terminal areas. The algorithm permits, but strictly limits, reassigning an aircraft from its initial position in the landing order. This limitation is needed so that no aircraft or aircraft category is unduly penalized. Results indicate, for the mix of arrivals investigated, a potential increase in capacity in the 3 to 5 percent range. Furthermore, it is shown that the computation time for the algorithm grows only linearly with problem size.

Fabrication and characterization of amine terminated poly(arylene ether sulfone) modified epoxy-carbon fiber composites

Multifunctional epoxy resin networks were chemically modified with thermoplastic amine terminated poly(arylene ether sulfones) of controlled molecular weights. This system was then examined as both neat resin and as a matrix resin for carbon fiber composites. The neat resin displayed a significant increase in both fracture toughness and energy release rate values. This was attributed to the altered morphology, which could be varied from particles of polysulfone in an epoxy matrix to that of a quasi-continuous polysulfone phase.

Synthesis, curing and physical behavior of maleimide terminated poly(arylene ethers)

This paper describes the synthesis of maleimide terminated poly(ether ketones) using the solution imidization process described by Summers et al. (1987). Amorphous poly(arylene ether ketones), as well as poly(arylene ether sulfones, of controlled end group functionalities and molecular weights were synthesized by nucleophilic step polymerization of bisphehol-A phenolates with activated halides, such as 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone, and 'monofunctional' end cappers such as m-aminophenol. The thermal properties of the system included glass transition temperature (Tg) values of 160-170 C, with modulus above Tg proportional to cross-link density, which in turn was reciprocally related to oligomer molecular weight. The measurements of the fracture toughness values showed the materials to be very ductile, with the toughness increasing with oligomer molecular weight.

Acetylene-Terminated Aspartimides And Derived Resins

New polymers and derived blends exhibit improved processability and properties. New toughened epoxies exhibit excellent properties, but use temperatures limited. Bismaleimide resins are some base materials formulated to develop materials having moderate use temperatures. Work conducted on use of acetylenic (ethynyl) group to cross-link and extend chains of oligomers and polymers to obtain materials to perform at higher temperatures. Extended to include acetylene-terminated aspartimides (ATA's).

A 20 GHz low noise, low cost receiver for digital satellite communication system, ground terminal applications

A 45 month effort for the development of a 20 GHz, low-noise, low-cost receiver for digital, satellite communication system, ground terminal applications is discussed. Six proof-of-concept receivers were built in two lots of three each. Performance was generally consistent between the two lots. Except for overall noise figure, parameters were within or very close to specification. While noise figure was specified as 3.5 dB, typical performance was measured at 3.0 to 5.5 dB, over the full temperature range of minus 30 C to plus 75 C.

A solar-wind 'trigger' for the outer heliosphere radio emissions and the distance to the terminal shock

The solar wind data from the plasma science experiment on the Voyager spacecraft are examined to search for the source of the 2 to 3 kHz radio noise detected in the outer heliosphere. It is found that two anomalous high speed streams passed Voyager 2 before the noise was initially observed. It is suggested that the interaction of these streams with the terminal shock is responsible for the more intense emission. Using a time-of-flight argument, the distance to the shock is estimated at about 70 AU-140 AU. The larger value is consistent with an estimate using Voyager data and a standard pressure-balance argument.

Numerical simulation of the 2 August 1985 DFW microburst with the three-dimensional Terminal Area Simulation System

A model simulation is performed for a small, intense thunderstorm which occurred at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport on August 2, 1985, leading to the crash of a commercial jetliner. The simulation is conducted with the three-dimensional Terminal Area Simulation System, a nonhydrostatic cloud model. The simulation is in good agreement with observations of the storm. It is found that for similar events, very little warning time may be possible as warning is based only on the surface level winds.

Optimal terminal maneuver for a cooperative impulsive rendezvous

An optimal terminal maneuver is presently defined for the cooperative impulsive rendezvous of two spacecraft, in which each vehicle is capable of furnishing all or a part of the velocity change required for the rendezvous. In this maneuver, the final masses of the two vehicles are maximized in a fashion that is equivalent to minimum total propellant consumption. If neither propellant mass fraction constraint is active, one vehicle will supply all of the required velocity change.

Early environmental effects of the terminal Cretaceous impact

The environmental aftereffects of the terminal Cretaceous impact are examined on the basis of the carbon and nitrogen geochemistry in the basal layer of the K-T boundary clay at Woodside Creek, New Zealand. It is shown that organic carbon and nitrogen at this level are enriched by 15 and 20 times Cretaceous values, respectively. Also, it is found that the N abundances and, to a lesser extent, the organic C abundances are closely correlated with the Ir abundances. The changes in carbon and nitrogen content through the basal layer are outlined, focusing on the possible environmental conditions which could have caused enrichment. In addition, consideration is given to the soot and pyrotoxin content. Possible scenarios for the K-T event and the importance of selective extinction are discussed.

Flight-test evaluation of civil helicopter terminal approach operations using differential GPS

A civil code differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) has been developed and flight-tested by the NASA Ames Research Center. The system was used to evaluate the performance of the DGPS for support of helicopter terminal approach operations. The airborne component of the DGPS was installed in a NASA helicopter. The ground-reference component was installed in a mobile van and equipped with a real-time VHF telemetry data link to transmit correction information to the aircraft system. An extensive series of tests was conducted to evaluate the performance of the system for several different configurations of the airborne navigation filter. This paper will describe the systems, the results of the flight tests, and the results of the posttest analysis.

Identification and verification of termination conditions in fine motion in presence of sensor errors and geometric uncertainties

Results are reported from a search for reasonable constraints under which an automatic uncertainty-handling strategy (for robot part-mating tasks) is guaranteed to succeed. The concept of contact formations is introduced to describe contacts among parts in a system, aiming at reducing the dimensionality of assembly verification. Also described is a technique for identifying contact formations in spite of errors in sensing and geometric uncertainties. It is impossible to verify termination conditions in general. Design constraints for which verification can be guaranteed are formulated and shown to be reasonable in the sense that they do not impose unrealistic conditions on typical designs. Results of implementation on a robot system consisting of a PUMA robot with RTI force/torque sensors support the theoretical derivations and show empirically that good results can still be obtained when the theoretical constraints are relaxed somewhat.

Nonvolatile Ionic Two-Terminal Memory Device

Conceptual solid-state memory device nonvolatile and erasable and has only two terminals. Proposed device based on two effects: thermal phase transition and reversible intercalation of ions. Transfer of sodium ions between source of ions and electrical switching element increases or decreases electrical conductance of element, turning switch "on" or "off". Used in digital computers and neural-network computers. In neural networks, many small, densely packed switches function as erasable, nonvolatile synaptic elements.
