Growth and characterization of La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 /YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7- δ bilayers

Understanding the interplay of ferromagnets and superconductors requires high quality interfaces. To this end, we have fabricated heterostructures of the cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) with the metallic ferromagnet La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) via pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO3 (STO) (001) and (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 (LSAT) (001) substrates. By varying the YBCO thickness from 1.7-13.6 nm while keeping the LSMO thickness at 12 nm, we have studied the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the in-plane transport and magnetic properties of the bilayers. X-ray reflectivity data indicate the presence of a 2-3 nm thick interfacial layer between the LSMO and YBCO layers in all heterostructures. In-plane transport measurements exhibit suppression of the superconducting transition temperature from bulk YBCO values. Magnetometry measurements indicate high LSMO saturation magnetization values for samples grown on STO substrates and even higher (bulk-like) magnetization for bilayers grown on LSAT substrates. Together these results indicate that the interdiffused layer is largely attributed to a modified YBCO layer.

Laser-induced transient magnons in Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 throughout the Brillouin zone

Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic X-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets and that they persist for several picoseconds, which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Overall, our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

Direct visualization of a static incommensurate antiferromagnetic order in Fe-doped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

Significance The pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, especially in cuprates, remains as the most challenging issue in condensed matter physics. The antiferromagnetic (AF) order/correlation is supposed to be important for inducing pairing and superconductivity. In this paper, we report the observation of a static incommensurate AF order by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope in Fe-doped Bi2212 with a nearly optimally doped state of superconductivity. The local incommensurate AF order can be directly visualized in regions with some Fe impurities. Our measurements provide a basis to study the interplay between superconductivity and AF spin fluctuations in cuprates.

Anomalous lattice relaxation dynamics in optimally doped La 2−𝑥⁢ Sr 𝑥 ⁢CuO 4

The atomic lattice plays a critical role in the emergence of high-𝑇 𝑐 superconductivity in cuprates. While the dynamics associated with electron-lattice coupling typically unfold on picosecond-to-femtosecond timescales, we present an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy investigation on an optimally doped La-based cuprate that reveals a strong response of kilosecond-scale lattice relaxation dynamics to the superconducting state. Notably, an anomaly emerges around 𝑇 𝑐 : upon cooling into the superconducting state, the average atomic relaxation lifetime decreases, i.e., dynamics accelerate. This indicates a significant change in the local disorder-induced strain field dynamics at the superconducting transition, highlighting a remarkable coupling between superconductivity and the lattice on quasistatic timescales.

Large Spin-Orbit-Torque Efficiency and Room-Temperature Magnetization Switching in Sr Ir O 3 / Co-Fe-B Heterostructures

Spin-orbit-torque (SOT) switching is a potentially energy-efficient mechanism by which electrical current can control magnetization. We demonstrate room-temperature SOT switching in nanometer-thick Co⁢Fe⁢B/Sr⁢Ir⁢O 3 bilayers despite the amorphous nature of CoFeB and the interface. This behavior is attributed to the large spin Hall angle in Sr⁢Ir⁢O 3 as well as high spin transmission at the interface that contribute to the SOT efficiency ξ SOT . Our bilayers exhibit large ξ SOT of up to 1.4 and effective spin Hall conductivity of 0.9 ×10 5 (ℏ/2e)Ω –1 ⁢m –1 . In our bilayers, we observe unidirectional magnetoresistance and current-induced magnetization switching with a low critical current density of 1.38 ×10 10 A/m 2 at room temperature. Finally, our results are promising for heterostructures combining technologically relevant CoFeB with high spin-orbit-coupling oxides.

Soft elastic constants from phonon spectroscopy in hole-doped Ba 1-x (K,Na) x Fe 2 As 2 and Sr 1-x Na x Fe 2 As 2

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the in-plane polarized transverse acoustic phonon mode propagating along q ∥ [ 100 ] in various hole-doped compounds belonging to the 122 family of iron-based superconductors. Additionally, the slope of the dispersion of this phonon mode is proportional to the square root of the shear modulus C 66 in the q → 0 limit and, hence, sensitive to the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition occurring in these compounds. In contrast to a recent report for Ba ( Fe 0.94 Co 0.06 ) 2 As 2 [Weber et al. , Phys. Rev. B 98 , 014516 (2018) ], we find qualitative agreement between values of C 66 deduced from our experiments and those derived from measurements of the Young modulus in Ba 1 - x ( K , Na ) x Fe 2 As 2 at optimal doping. These results provide an upper limit of about 50 Å for the nematic correlation length for the investigated optimally hole-doped compounds. Furthermore, we also studied compounds at lower doping levels exhibiting the orthorhombic magnetic phase, where C 66 is not accessible by volume probes, as well as the C 4 tetragonal magnetic phase.

Electron correlations in the cubic paramagnetic perovskite Sr ( V , Mn ) O 3 : Results from fully self-consistent self-energy embedding calculations

In this study, we use the thermodynamically consistent and conserving self-energy embedding theory (SEET) to study the spectra of the prototypical undistorted cubic perovskites SrVO 3 and SrMnO 3 . In the strongly correlated metallic SrVO 3 we find that the usual attribution of the satellite peaks at –1.8 eV to Hund or Hubbard physics in the t 2 g orbitals is inconsistent with our calculations. In the strongly correlated insulator SrMnO 3 we recover insulating behavior due to a feedback effect between the strongly correlated orbitals and the weakly correlated environment. Our calculation shows a systematic convergence of spectral features as the space of strongly correlated orbitals is enlarged, paving the way to a systematic parameter-free study of correlated perovskites.

Three-dimensional stacking of canted antiferromagnetism and pseudospin current in undoped Sr 2 IrO 4 : Symmetry analysis and microscopic model realization

Recent optical second-harmonic generation experiments observed unexpected broken spatial symmetries in the undoped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2 IrO4, leading to intensive debates on the nature of its ground state. Here we propose that it is a canted antiferromagnetism (CAF) with a hidden order of circulating staggered pseudospin current. Symmetry analysis shows that a proper c-axis stacking of the CAF and the pseudospin current lead to a magnetoelectric coexistence state that breaks the twofold rotation, inversion, and time-reversal symmetries, consistent with experimental observations. We construct a three-dimensional Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling and structural distortion for the five localized 5d Wannier orbitals centered at Ir sites and demonstrate the microscopic realization of the desired coexistence state in a wide range of band parameters via a combination of self-consistent Hartree-Fock and variational calculations.

Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic states in Ca Mn 2 As 2 and Sr Mn 2 As 2 revealed by As 75 NMR

Here, we carried out 75 As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the trigonal CaMn 2 As 2 and SrMn 2 As 2 insulators exhibiting antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states below Néel temperatures T N = 62 and 120 K, respectively. In the paramagnetic state above T N , typical quadrupolar-split 75 As NMR spectra were observed for both systems. The 75 As quadrupolar frequency ν Q for CaMn 2 As 2 decreases with decreasing temperature, while ν Q for SrMn 2 As 2 increases, showing an opposite temperature dependence. In the AFM state, the relatively sharp and distinct 75 As NMR lines were observed in SrMn 2 As 2 and the NMR spectra were shifted to lower fields for both magnetic fields H ∥ c axis and H ∥ a b plane, suggesting that the internal fields B int at the As site produced by the Mn ordered moments are nearly perpendicular to the external magnetic field direction. No obvious distribution of B int was observed in SrMn 2 As 2 , which clearly indicates a commensurate AFM state. In sharp contrast to SrMn 2 As 2 , broad and complex NMR spectra were observed in CaMn 2 As 2 in the AFM state, which clearly shows a distribution of B int at the As site, indicating an incommensurate state. From the analysis of the characteristic shape of the observed spectra, the AFM state of CaMn 2 As 2 was determined to be a two-dimensional incommensurate state where Mn ordered moments are aligned in the ab plane. A possible origin for the different AFM states in the systems was discussed. Both CaMn 2 As 2 and SrMn 2 As 2 show very large anisotropy in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T 1 in the paramagnetic state. 1/T 1 for H ∥ ab is much larger than that for H ∥ c, indicating strong anisotropic AFM spin fluctuations in both compounds.

Revised phase diagram of the high- T c cuprate superconductor Pb-doped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ revealed by anisotropic transport measurements

Although phase diagrams can be leveraged to investigate high transition temperature (high-T c ) superconductivity, the issue has not been discussed thoroughly. In this study, we elucidate the phase diagram of the overdoped side of high-T c cuprates via systematic anisotropic transport measurements for Pb-doped Bi-2212 single crystals. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperatures of the “weak” pseudogap opening and electronic coherence cross each other at a critical doping level, while those of the “strong” pseudogap merges into that of superconducting fluctuations above the critical doping level. Her the results indicate the importance of Mottness in high-T c superconductivity.

$μ$ $\mathrm{SR}$ study of the dipole-octupole quantum spin ice candidate $\mathrm{Ce_2Zr_2O_7}$

The Ce 3+ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 possess both dipolar and octupolar character which enables the possibility of novel quantum spin liquid ground states in this material. In this study, we report muon spin relaxation and rotation (μSR) measurements on single-crystal samples of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in zero magnetic field and in magnetic fields directed along the [1, $\overline{1}$, 0] and [1, 1, 1] crystallographic directions, and for magnetic fields directed both longitudinal and transverse to the direction of muon polarization. Our zero-field results show no signs of magnetic ordering or spin freezing, consistent with earlier zero-field μSR measurements on a powder sample of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 , and also with the expectations for a quantum spin ice. However, we measure a more gentle relaxation rate for Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in zero field at low temperatures than was previously reported. This difference in relaxation rate is likely due to the low oxidation and, correspondingly, the high stoichiometry of our singlecrystal samples. Longitudinal field measurements confirm that the magnetic dipole moments in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 remain dynamic at T = 0.1 K on the microsecond timescale. For both [1, $\overline{1}$, 0] and [1, 1, 1] magnetic fields, our μSR Knight shift measurements show a field-induced leveling off of the magnetic susceptibility at low temperature which is qualitatively consistent with corresponding calculations using the numerical-linked-cluster method in combination with recent estimates for the nearest-neighbor exchange parameters of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 .
