Exotic Dark Matter Search with the Majorana Demonstrator

With excellent energy resolution and ultralow-level radiogenic backgrounds, the high-purity germanium detectors in the enable searches for several classes of exotic dark matter (DM) models. In this work, we report new experimental limits on keV-scale sterile neutrino DM via the transition magnetic moment from conversion to active neutrinos ν s → ν a . We report new limits on fermionic dark matter absorption ( χ + A → ν + A ) and sub-GeV DM-nucleus 3 → 2 scattering ( χ + χ + A → ϕ + A ), and new exclusion limits for bosonic dark matter (axionlike particles and dark photons). These searches utilize the (1–100)-keV low-energy region of a 37.5-kg y exposure collected by the between May 2016 and November 2019 using a set of Ge 76 -enriched detectors whose surface exposure time was carefully controlled, resulting in extremely low levels of cosmogenic activation. Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into ν e + e − or ν π 0 final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab’s main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01 × 10 20 protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter | U μ 4 | 2 in the mass ranges 10 ≤ m HNL ≤ 150 MeV for the ν e + e − channel and 150 ≤ m HNL ≤ 245 MeV for the ν π 0 channel, assuming | U e 4 | 2 = | U τ 4 | 2 = 0 . These limits represent the most stringent constraints in the mass range 35 < m HNL < 175 MeV and the first constraints from a direct search for ν π 0 decays. Search for Inelastic Dark Matter in Events with Two Displaced Muons and Missing Transverse Momentum in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for dark matter in events with a displaced nonresonant muon pair and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 of proton-proton ( p p ) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV produced by the LHC in 2016–2018. No significant excess over the predicted backgrounds is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the inelastic dark matter production cross section σ ( p p → A ′ → χ 1 χ 2 ) and the decay branching fraction B ( χ 2 → χ 1 μ + μ − ) , where A ′ is a dark photon and χ 1 and χ 2 are states in the dark sector with near mass degeneracy. This is the first dedicated collider search for inelastic dark matter. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Search for Daily Modulation of MeV Dark Matter Signals with DAMIC-M

Dark matter (DM) particles with sufficiently large cross sections may scatter as they travel through Earth’s bulk. The corresponding changes in the DM flux give rise to a characteristic daily modulation signal in detectors sensitive to DM-electron interactions. Here, we report results obtained from the first underground operation of the DAMIC-M prototype detector searching for such a signal from DM with MeV-scale mass. A model-independent analysis finds no modulation in the rate of 1 e − events with sidereal period, where a DM signal would appear. We then use these data to place exclusion limits on DM in the mass range [ 0.53 , 2.7 ] MeV / c 2 interacting with electrons via a dark photon mediator. Taking advantage of the time-dependent signal we improve by ∼ 2 orders of magnitude on our previous limit obtained from the total rate of 1 e − events, using the same dataset. This daily modulation search represents the current strongest limit on DM-electron scattering via ultralight mediators for DM masses around 1 MeV / c 2 . Search for Baryon Number Violation in Top Quark Production and Decay Using Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for baryon number violating interactions in top quark production and decay. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Candidate events are selected by requiring two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and exactly one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. Multivariate discriminants are used to separate the signal from the background. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed. Upper limits are placed on the strength of baryon number violating couplings. For the first time the production of single top quarks via baryon number violating interactions is studied. This allows the search to set the most stringent constraints to date on the branching fraction of the top quark decay to a lepton, an up-type quark (𝑢 or 𝑐), and a down-type quark (𝑑, 𝑠, or 𝑏). The results improve the previous bounds by 3 to 6 orders of magnitude based on the fermion flavor combination of the baryon number violating interactions.

Search for Narrow Trijet Resonances in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first search for singly produced narrow resonances decaying to three well-separated hadronic jets is presented. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 at s = 13 TeV , collected at the CERN LHC. No significant deviations from the background predictions are observed between 1.75 and 9.00 TeV. The results provide the first mass limits on a right-handed boson Z R decaying to three gluons and on an excited quark decaying via a vector boson to three quarks, as well as updated limits on a Kaluza-Klein gluon decaying via a radion to three gluons. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Search for Rare b → d ℓ + ℓ − Transitions at Belle

We present the results of a search for the b → d ℓ + ℓ − flavor-changing neutral-current rare decays B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π + , 0 , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π 0 , ρ + ) μ + μ − using a 711 fb − 1 data sample that contains 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ events. The data were collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We find no evidence for signal and set upper limits on branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the range ( 3.8 – 47 ) × 10 − 8 depending on the decay channel. The obtained limits are the world’s best results. This is the first search for the channels B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + ) μ + μ − . Prospects for Light Dark Matter Searches at Large-Volume Neutrino Detectors

We propose a new approach to search for light dark matter (DM), with keV–GeV mass, via inelastic nucleus scattering at large-volume neutrino detectors such as Borexino, DUNE, Super-K, Hyper-K, and JUNO. The approach uses inelastic nuclear scattering of cosmic-ray boosted DM, enabling a low-background search for DM in these experiments. Large neutrino detectors, with higher thresholds than dark matter detectors, can be used, since the nuclear deexcitation lines are O ( 10 ) MeV . Using a hadrophilic dark-gauge-boson-portal model as a benchmark, we show that the nuclear inelastic channels generally provide better sensitivity than the elastic scattering for a large region of light DM parameter space. Search for Light Long-Lived Particles in $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV Using Displaced Vertices in the ATLAS Inner Detector

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) using 140 fb -1 of pp collision data with $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is presented. The search targets LLPs with masses between 5 and 55 GeV that decay hadronically in the ATLAS inner detector. Benchmark models with LLP pair production from exotic decays of the Higgs boson and models featuring long-lived axionlike particles (ALPs) are considered. No significant excess above the expected background is observed. Upper limits are placed on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to pairs of LLPs, the cross section for ALPs produced in association with a vector boson, and, for the first time, on the branching ratio of the top quark to an ALP and a u/c quark.

Search for the Exclusive W Boson Hadronic Decays W ± → π ± γ, W ± → K ± γ and W ± → ρ ± γ with the ATLAS Detector

A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W ± → π ± γ, W ± → K ± γ, and W ± → ρ ± γ is performed using up to 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products. The search results in the most stringent upper limits to date on the branching fractions B(W ± → π ± γ) < 1.9 × 10 -6 , B(W ± → K ± γ) < 1.7 × 10 -6 , B(W ± → ρ ± γ) < 5.2 × 10 -6 at 95% confidence level.

Searches for Pair-Produced Multijet Resonances Using Data Scouting in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

Searches for pair-produced multijet signatures using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 128 fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV are presented. A data scouting technique is employed to record events with low jet scalar transverse momentum sum values. The electroweak production of particles predicted in R -parity violating supersymmetric models is probed for the first time with fully hadronic final states. This is the first search for prompt hadronically decaying mass-degenerate higgsinos, and extends current exclusions on R -parity violating top squarks and gluinos.

Search for the 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢$𝜈⁢\bar{𝜈}$ Decay at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

We performed a search for the 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢$𝜈⁢\bar{𝜈}$ decay using the data taken in 2021 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With newly installed counters and new analysis method, the expected background was suppressed to 0.252 ± 0.055 stat ⁢ $^{+0.052}_{{−0.067^{syst}}}$. With a single event sensitivity of (9.33 ± 0.0⁢6 stat ±0.8⁢4 syst ) × 10 −10 , no events were observed in the signal region. An upper limit on the branching fraction for the decay was set to be 2.2 ×10 −9 at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous upper limit from KOTO by a factor of 1.4. With the same data, a search for 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢𝑋 0 was also performed, where 𝑋 0 is an invisible boson with a mass ranging from 1 to 260 MeV/𝑐 2 . For 𝑋 0 with a mass of 135 MeV/𝑐 2 , an upper limit on the branching fraction of 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢𝑋 0 was set to be 1.6 ×10 −9 at the 90% C.L.

Dual-Baseline Search for Active-to-Sterile Neutrino Oscillations in NOvA

We report a search for neutrino oscillations to sterile neutrinos under a model with three active and one sterile neutrinos (3+1 model). This analysis uses the NOvA detectors exposed to the NuMI beam, running in neutrino mode. The data exposure, 13.6 × 10 20 protons on target, doubles that previously analyzed by NOvA, and the analysis is the first to use 𝜈 𝜇 charged-current interactions in conjunction with neutral-current interactions. Neutrino samples in the near and far detectors are fitted simultaneously, enabling the search to be carried out over a Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{41}$ range extending 2 (3) orders of magnitude above (below) 1 eV 2 . NOvA finds no evidence for active-to-sterile neutrino oscillations under the 3+1 model at 90% confidence level. New limits are reported in multiple regions of parameter space, excluding some regions currently allowed by IceCube at 90% confidence level. We additionally set the most stringent limits for anomalous 𝜈 𝜏 appearance for Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{41}$ ≤ 3 eV 2 .

Search for Dark Matter Produced in Association with a Dark Higgs Boson in the b b ¯ Final State Using p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

A search is performed for dark matter particles produced in association with a resonantly produced pair of b -quarks with 30 < m b b < 150 GeV using 140 fb − 1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This signature is expected in extensions of the standard model predicting the production of dark matter particles, in particular those containing a dark Higgs boson s that decays into b b ¯ . The highly boosted s → b b ¯ topology is reconstructed using jet reclustering and a new identification algorithm. This search places stringent constraints across regions of the dark Higgs model parameter space that satisfy the observed relic density, excluding dark Higgs bosons with masses between 30 and 150 GeV in benchmark scenarios with Z ′ mediator masses up to 4.8 TeV at 95% confidence level. © 2025 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration 2025 CERN

Search for Fractionally Charged Particles in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for fractionally charged particles with charges below 1⁢𝑒, using their small energy loss in the tracking detector as a key variable to observe a signal. The analyzed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 of proton-proton collisions collected at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV in 2016–2018 at the CERN LHC. This is the first search at the LHC for new particles with a charge between 𝑒/3 and 0.9⁢𝑒, including an extension of previous results at a charge of 2⁢𝑒/3. Masses up to 640 GeV and charges as low as 𝑒/3 are excluded at 95% confidence level. These are the most stringent limits to date for the considered Drell-Yan-like production mode.

First Axionlike Particle Results from a Broadband Search for Wavelike Dark Matter in the 44 to 52 μ ⁢eV Range with a Coaxial Dish Antenna

We present the results from the first axionlike particle search conducted using a dish antenna. The experiment was conducted at room temperature and sensitive to axionlike particles in the 44–52 μ ⁢eV range (10.7–12.5 GHz). The novel dish antenna geometry was proposed by the BREAD Collaboration and previously used to conduct a dark photon search in the same mass range. To allow for axionlike particle sensitivity, the BREAD dish antenna was placed in a 3.9 T solenoid magnet at Argonne National Laboratory. In the presence of a magnetic field, axionlike dark matter converts to photons at the conductive surface of the reflector. The signal is focused onto a custom coaxial horn antenna and read out with a low-noise radio-frequency receiver. No evidence of axionlike dark matter was observed in this mass range and we place the most stringent laboratory constraints on the axion-photon coupling strength, 𝑔 𝑎⁢𝛾⁢𝛾 , in this mass range at 90% confidence.

Search for a narrow resonance with a mass between 10 and 70 GeV decaying to a pair of photons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

The existence of a new spin-zero particle with a mass below the electroweak scale is predicted by several theoretical models. Searches for resonant production of photon pairs at the LHC are able to probe these models. We present a search for a narrow resonance produced through gluon fusion that decays into a pair of photons with an invariant mass between 10 and 70 GeV, using a proton-proton collision dataset from the CMS experiment. This dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 54.4 fb −1 , was recorded in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using a newly introduced diphoton trigger that enabled exploration of the low-mass diphoton spectrum. No significant excess above the expected background is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the gluon fusion production cross section and the branching fraction of the diphoton decay of a narrow resonance. An interpretation of these limits within an effective field theory framework for axionlike particles is also provided.

Searches for nonstandard neutrino oscillations at neutrino telescopes with a TeV muon accelerator source

Muon accelerators, a potential technology for enabling O ( 10 TeV ) parton center of mass energy collisions, would also source an intense, collimated beam of neutrinos at TeV energies. The energy and size of this beam would be excellently matched as a source for existing and planned neutrino telescopes: gigaton-sized detectors of astrophysical neutrinos at and above TeV energies. In this paper, we introduce the technical considerations and scientific reach of pairing a muon accelerator source of neutrinos with a neutrino telescope detector, a combination we dub the “Neutrino Kaleidoscope.” In particular, such a pairing would enable searches for non-standard oscillations of the beam neutrinos as they traverse the earth between source and detector. These nonstandard neutrino oscillations could be sourced by Lorentz invariance violation, which a neutrino kaleidoscope could probe up to the Planck scale. Such a search would also have a reach on sterile neutrinos orders of magnitude beyond existing terrestrial limits. Finally, we touch on the nonoscillation physics case for a neutrino kaleidoscope.
