Forecasting sea breeze thunderstorms at the Kennedy Space Center using the Prognostic Three-Dimensional Mesoscale Model (P 3DM)

A Prognostic Three-Dimensional Model (P3DM) to produce 1- to 12-hr predictions of sea breeze convective (SBC) storms at KSC is described. The P3DM was developed to account for a scale of about 10 km, interactions between surface heat and moisture fluxes, boundary layer convergence, the movement of moisture into cloud formation zones, and alterations in the convective potential in the lower levels of the atmosphere during the diurnal cycle. Initialized with wind, temperature, specific humidity and local water temperature data, the model allows for the distortion of the boundary layer moisture and thermal fields by sea breeze conditions. The results of three simulations of events leading to the onset of SBC storms are presented to demonstrate the model's capabilities, and techniques which may enhance the accuracy of the predictions are discussed.

Determination of lifetime and surface recombination velocity of p-n junction solar cells and diodes by observing transients

The unified view of transient methods for the determination of recombination lifetime tau and back surface recombination velocity S presented here for silicon solar cells and diodes attempts to define limitations of existing methods and to evolve improvements. The presence of sizable junction capacitance for silicon devices under forward voltage invalidates the use of conventional open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) and reverse recovery. This led Green (1983) to his method of compensated open-circuit voltage decay, in which the addition of an external resistor shunting the solar cell partially corrects for the presence of the junction capacitance. Setting this resistance to zero produces an electrical short-circuit current-decay method, which has the advantage of enabling determination of both tau and S. In an alternate approach, one may insert the functional dependence of the junction capacitance on forward voltage. This new method, denoted by the acronym OCVDCAP, enables the determination of tau with apparently greater accuracy than that obtained by previous methods utilizing voltage transients. But OCVDCAP has in common with the previous methods that it determines tau only and has practical utility only for determining tau of long-base devices. This means that it is useful only for thick base regions. In principle, however, it has an advantage over short-circuit current decay: it requires only pressure contacts, not ohmic contacts, and therefore may be used to determine tau after key processing steps in manufacturing.

Hierarchic plate and shell models based on p-extension

This paper is concerned with formulations of finite element models for beams, arches, plates and shells based on the principle of virtual work. The focus is on computer implementation of hierarchic sequences of finite element models suitable for numerical solution of a large variety of practical problems which may concurrently contain thin and thick plates and shells, stiffeners, and regions where three dimensional representation is required. The approximate solutions corresponding to the hierarchic sequence of models converge to the exact solution of the fully three dimensional model. The stopping criterion is based on (1) estimation of the relative error in energy norm; (2) equilibrium tests; and (3) observation of the convergence of quantities of interest.

Planetary astronomy P. I. research summary

A systematic survey for near-Earth and planet-crossing asteriods is being conducted with the 0.46 m Schmidt at Palomar to increase the number of known asteroids and establish improved estimates of their populations and size distribution. Access to a limited number of PSS11 plates from the 1.2 m Schmidt are used also to search for unusual objects. Field pairs from the 0.46 m are photographed and inspected with a stereomicroscope; new objects are detected and followed to establich definitive orbits. When near-Earth asteroids are discovered, other astronomers are informed so that physical observations can be obtained. With remote sensing results, possible generic relationships are suggested. Population refinements can be accomplished by increasing the number of known asteroids under well-established conditions of search. From 13 observing runs made at Palomar, 215 new asteroids were discovered and reported with good orbits determined for 90. Significant discoveries are Apollo 1988 EG, Amor 1987 QB, and an unusual high inclination asteroid, 1988 EO. Other discoveries of importance include 12 Mars-crossers, 6 Hungaries, and 13 Phocaeas. The discovery of short-period comet Helin, 1988w, which makes a close approach to Saturn, is also notable.

Application of the p-version of the finite-element method to global-local problems

A brief survey is given of some recent developments in finite-element analysis technology which bear upon the three main research areas under consideration in this workshop: (1) analysis methods; (2) software testing and quality assurance; and (3) parallel processing. The variational principle incorporated in a finite-element computer program, together with a particular set of input data, determines the exact solution corresponding to that input data. Most finite-element analysis computer programs are based on the principle of virtual work. In the following, researchers consider only programs based on the principle of virtual work and denote the exact displacement vector field corresponding to some specific set of input data by vector u(EX). The exact solution vector u(EX) is independent of the design of the mesh or the choice of elements. Except for very simple problems, or specially constructed test problems, vector u(EX) is not known. Researchers perform a finite-element analysis (or any other numerical analysis) because they wish to make conclusions concerning the response of a physical system to certain imposed conditions, as if vector u(EX) were known.

Deep levels and radiation effects in p-InP

A survey was conducted on past studies of hole traps in InP. An experiment was designed to evaluate hole traps in Zn-doped InP after fabrication, after electron irradiation and after annealing using deep level transient spectroscopy. Data similar to that of Yamaguchi was seen with observation of both radiation-induced hole and electron traps at E sub A=0.45 eV and 0.03 eV, respectively. Both traps are altered by annealing. It is also shown that trap parameters for surface-barrier devices are influenced by many factors such as bias voltage, which probes traps at different depths below the surface. These devices require great care in data evaluation.

The electron beam instability revisited: Growth above and below f sub p

The growth of electrostatic waves near the plasma frequency (fp) due to an unstable electron beam is investigated by solving the unmagnetized electrostatic dispersion equation numerically. The numerical solutions are compared with analytic theories for reactive (or fluid-type) and kinetic versions of the beam instability, and for the O'Neil/Malmberg connection of the beam and Langmuir modes. Conditions for growth significantly above or below fp are given. Three general results are found: (1) The unstable waves do not grow on a mode with Langmuir dispersion except in the limit of a very dilute beam with growth on O'Neil/Malmberg's connected mode; (2) The properties of the unstable mode depend strongly on beam parameters such as beam density, speed and temperature; and (3) The frequency of maximum growth frequently lies significantly above or below fp, and differs significantly from that predicted by the Langmuir dispersion relation. Results imply important consequences for theories of strong turbulence and nonlinear wave-wave processes, and observational identification of fp from observed wave frequencies.

Observations of F- and P-Mode Oscillations of High Degree (500 Is Less Than L Is Less Than 2500) in Quiet and Active Sun

Spectra (l - v diagrams) from high resolution observations taken at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (NSO/Sunspot) are presented. The raw data are CCD images taken through the SOUP narrowband filter in Fe I 5576 A. Four filtergrams spaced through the spectral line are combined to form velocity movies. Spectra for 80 min of data with 0.5 to 1.5 arcsec resolution are presented for the entire field-of-view and for quiet and magnetic (plage) subregions. Ridges f and p1 to p5 are evident in velocity spectra, extending to l = 2500 (f), l = 1800 (p1), and l = 1200 (p2). Much less power is seen in the magnetic region than in the quiet Sun. Three-dimensional Fourier filtering shows that oscillation velocity amplitude drops sharply at the boundary of the active region for each family of modes considered.

The NASA Langley Research Center 0.3-meter transonic cryogenic tunnel T-P/Re-M controller manual

A new microcomputer based controller for the 0.3-m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (TCT) has been commissioned in 1988 and has reliably operated for more than a year. The tunnel stagnation pressure, gas stagnation temperature, tunnel wall structural temperature and flow Mach number are precisely controlled by the new controller in a stable manner. The tunnel control hardware, software, and the flow chart to assist in calibration of the sensors, actuators, and the controller real time functions are described. The software installation details are also presented. The report serves as the maintenance and trouble shooting manual for the 0.3-m TCT controller.

Electrochemical stability of LiMF6 (M = P, As, Sb) in tetrahydrofuran and sulfolane

The electrochemical stability of LiSbF6 and LiPF6 in aprotic organic solvents has been investigated. Electrochemical studies, conductivity measurements, and open-circuit stability tests were conducted on LiSbF6 in tetrahydrofuran and sulfolane. Cyclic voltammetric studies of SbF6(-) were compared with those of AsF6(-) and PF6(-) anions. Sb(V) was reduced to Sb(III), and then to Sb(0). AsF6(-) was reduced to AsF3, while no reduction of PF6(-) was observed. The reduction products of AsF6(-) and SbF6(-) passivated the glassy carbon electrode, presumably due to LiF precipitation. Peak potentials were observed to shift in the positive direction as a function of concentration. This was accounted for on the basis of a follow-up chemical reaction.

Relativistic solitons and shocks in magnetized e(-)-e(+)-p(+) fluids

A new type of relativistic magnetosonic soliton, which is electrically charged with a gigavolt potential, is found to exist in a magnetized electron-positron-proton plasma. Relativistic collisionless shocks resulting from such solitons can carry an even larger electric potential at the shock front. GeV electrons and positrons in some active astrophsyical sources may be produced due to acceleration by these electric fields.

Absolute and relative nonlinear optical coefficients of KDP, KD(asterisk)P, BaB2O4, LiIO3, MgO:LiNbO3, and KTP measured by phase-matched second-harmonic generation

Both absolute and relative nonlinear optical coefficients of six nonlinear materials measured by second-harmonic generation are discussed. A single-mode, injection-seeded, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with spatially filtered output was used to generate the 1.064-micron fundamental radiation. The following results were obtained: d36(KDP) = 0.38 pm/V, d36(KD/asterisk/P) = 0.37 pm/V, (parallel)d22(BaB2O4)(parallel) = 2.2 pm/V, d31(LiIO3) = -4.1 pm/V, d31(5 percentMgO:MgO LiNbO3) = -4.7 pm/V, and d(eff)(KTP) = 3.2 pm/V. The accuracy of these measurements is estimated to be better than 10 percent.

Space Exposed Experiment Developed for Students (SEEDS) P-0004-2

This cooperative endeavor of NASA Headquarters, the NASA Langley Research Center, and the George W. Park Seed Company, resulted in the distribution, by the end of March, 1990, of approximately 132,000 space exposed experiment developed for students (SEEDS) kits to 64,000 teachers representing 40,000 classrooms and 3.3 million kindergarden through university students. Kits were sent to every state, as well as to 30 foreign countries. Preliminary radiation data indicates that layer A received 725 rads, while layer D received 350 rads. Germination rate was reported to be 73.8 percent for space exposed seeds and 70.3 percent for earth based control seeds. Tests conducted within the first six months after retrieval indicated space exposed seeds germinated in an average of 8.0 days, while earth based control seeds' average germination rate was 8.3 days. Some mutations (assumed to be radiation induced) reported by students and Park Seed include plants that added a leaf instead of the usual flower at the end of the flower front and fruit produced from a flower with a variegated calyx bore seeds producing albino plants, while fruit from a flower with a green calyx from the same plant bore seeds produced green plants.

Using KD(asterisk)P modulators for polarization measurements of the sun

Longitudinal KD(asterisk)Ps are used in ground-based solar magnetographs to eliminate seeing effects by rapidly changing their retardation characteristics. Although one of the main applications for longitudinal KD(asteriak)Ps has been their use as a variable retarder for 'imaging' applications, an understanding of their limitations is important when developing scientific instruments that make very accurate polarization measurements. This paper discusses some of the problems associated with the use of these devices in the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) vector magnetograph, including temperature, field of view errors, and electrical characteristics.
