Catalysis Driven by Confined Hot Carriers at the Liquid/Metal/Zeolite Interface

In chemical industry controlling the activity and selectivity of a chemical conversion process is of immense importance. Traditionally, dissipation of thermal energy drives transformation of reactants, which may lead to formation of a variety of products; it remains a key challenge to design a process that dissociation and formation of specific chemical bonds can be triggered to form certain desirable products with very high selectivity, preferably at low temperatures. Introduction of light-sensitive solid materials into catalysis provides a powerful, alternate strategy for this purpose.

Ionic Liquids for Direct Air Capture of CO 2 using Electric‐Field‐Mediated Moisture Gradient Process (Final Technical Report)

The final report provides executive summary, a list of publications, and information on training graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. We carried out computational and experimental research on understanding molecular-level mechanism of how CO 2 is absorbed in a solution containing ethylene glycol as the solvent and KOH as the salt in the presence of ionic liquids and under the influence of electric field. In doing so, we developed an automated high-throughput method which allowed us to measure the solubility of CO 2 in a large number of ionic liquids, considerably speeding up the CO 2 solubility measurement. We also demonstrated how varying the concentration of ionic liquids in ethylene glycol can result in a maximum in ionic conductivity. Reaction of CO 2 and subsequent release results in a 50% reduction when the process is operated at an ionic liquid-ethylene glycol concentration yielding maximum ionic conductivity amongst all the ionic liquid-ethylene glycol combinations studied as a part of this research. We utilized machine learning models to identify unique ionic liquid-solvent combinations with ionic conductivity much higher than that measured for ionic liquid-ethylene glycol combinations. We demonstrated that the rate of CO 2 reaction with KOH in ethylene glycol can be optimized with the type of ionic liquid and its concentration. Overall, the research led to publication of 10 peer-reviewed research articles and several presentations at national conferences. We are also in the process of developing additional manuscripts based on the research carried out as a part of this project. Two graduate students and two postdoctoral researchers were supported on the funding.

ARM Aerosol Measurement Science Group 2024 Strategic Planning Workshop Report

This report summarizes the results of the 2024 Strategic Planning Workshop conducted by the Aerosol Measurement Science Group (AMSG) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility. The objective of this workshop was to provide ARM facility guidance through specific recommendations relating to aerosol science for a period of five years. The AMSG primary focus of this workshop was to help advance strategic external partnership engagement for ARM’s aerosol measurement program. The workshop was held July 9-10, 2024 at the University of Utah. This was the third such workshop since the AMSG was chartered in 2015 to enhance coordination of ARM observations of aerosols and atmospheric trace gases with the needs of ARM users.

Coastal Urban Boundary-layer Interactions with Convection (CUBIC)

The CUBIC project added three extra weather‑profiling stations across Houston during the 2021 TRACER campaign to better understand how sea breezes, urban heat, and local circulations affect air quality and help trigger storms. These observations, combined with drone data and model simulations, give a clearer picture of how the boundary layer behaves in a coastal city.

Quantum Enhanced Fiber Sensing for Oil and Gas Applications (Final Technical Report)

The major goal of the project was to develop a quantum sensing approach compatible with current infrastructure in the oil and gas industry that could provide a quantum enhancement, with a focus towards pipeline leak detection. The proposed approach to achieving this goal consisted of the use of quantum states of light to enhance the sensitivity of fiber optic sensors beyond the classical limit. To address the limitations of existing commercial leak detection, the project focused on the study of two technologies: distributed acoustic sensors (DAS) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors. The initial phase of the project centered around the identification and mitigation of dominant sources of classical noise to enable operation at the classical shot noise limit (SNL). The second phase focused on the use of quantum resources to obtain sensitivities beyond the classical SNL. The final phase sought to combine quantum noise reduction techniques with advanced dynamical classical noise cancelation approaches.
