Microhydration of the metastable N -Protomer of 4-Aminobenzoic acid by condensation at 80 K: H/D exchange without conversion to the more stable O- protomer

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4ABA) is a model scaffold for studying solvent-mediated proton transfer. Although protonation at the carboxylic group (O-protomer) is energetically favored in the gas phase, the N-protomer, where the proton remains on the amino group, can be kinetically trapped by electrospray ionization of 4ABA in an aprotic solvent such as acetonitrile. Here we report the formation of the hydrated deuterium isotopologues of the N-protomers, RND 3 + ·(H 2 O) n=1-3 , (R=C 6 H 4 COOD), which are generated by condensing water molecules onto the bare N-protomers in a liquid nitrogen cooled, radiofrequency octopole ion trap at 80 K. The product clusters are then transferred to a 20 K cryogenic ion trap where they are tagged with weakly bound D 2 molecules. The structures of these clusters are determined by analysis of their vibrational patterns obtained by resonant IR photodissociation. The resulting patterns confirm that the metastable N-protomer configuration remains intact even when warmed by sequential condensation of water molecules. Attachment of H 2 O molecules onto the RND 3 + head group also affords the opportunity to explore the possibility of H/D exchange between the acid scaffold and the proximal water network. The spectroscopic results establish that although the RND 3 + ·(H 2 O) n=1,2 clusters are formed without H/D exchange, the n = 3 cluster exhibits about 10% H/D exchange as evidenced by the appearance of the telltale HOD bands. Furthermore, the site of exchange on the acid is determined to be the acidic OH by the emergence of the OH stretching fundamental in the -COOH motif.

Electron irradiation effects on the optical properties of Hf- and Zn-doped β -Ga 2 O 3

Optical and electrical properties of Hf- and Zn-doped β-Ga 2 O 3 samples, which are n-type and insulating, respectively, were altered via high-energy electron irradiation at 2.5 or 0.5 MeV. The β-Ga 2 O 3 :Hf samples irradiated with 2.5 MeV electrons experienced a color change from blue to yellow and a large drop in conductivity, attributed to the creation of gallium vacancies, which compensate donors. This irradiation resulted in the absence of free carrier absorption and the presence of Cr 3+ photoluminescence (PL). PL mapping prior to irradiation revealed optically active ZnO precipitates that formed during the growth of β-Ga 2 O 3 :Zn. These precipitates have a 384 nm (3.23 eV) stacking fault emission in the core; in the outer shell of the precipitate, the PL blue-shifts to 377 nm (3.29 eV) and a broad defect band is observed. After 0.5 MeV electron irradiation, the defect band broadened and increased in intensity. The blue PL band (435 nm) of β-Ga 2 O 3 was enhanced for both Hf- and Zn-doped samples irradiated with 0.5 MeV. This enhancement is correlated with an increase in oxygen vacancies.

Ferro-ionic states and domains morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles

Unique polar properties of nanoscale hafnia-zirconia oxides (Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 ) are of great interest for condensed matter physics, nanophysics, and advanced applications. These properties are connected (at least partially) to the ionic–electronic and electrochemical phenomena at the surface, interfaces, and/or internal grain boundaries. Here, we calculated the phase diagrams, dielectric permittivity, spontaneous polar, and antipolar ordering, as well as the domain structure morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles covered by ionic–electronic charge originating from surface electrochemical adsorption. We revealed that the ferro-ionic coupling supports the polar long-range order in nanoscale Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 , induces, and/or enlarges the stability region of the labyrinthine domains toward smaller sizes and smaller environmental dielectric constant at low concentrations of the surface ions. The ferro-ionic coupling causes the transition to the single-domain ferro-ionic state at high concentrations of the surface ions. We predict that the labyrinthine domain states, being multiple-degenerated, may significantly affect the emergence of the negative differential capacitance state in the nanograined/nanocrystalline Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 films.

Local lattice distortions and dynamics in extremely overdoped superconducting YSr 2 Cu 2.75 Mo 0.25 O 7.54

A common characteristic of many “overdoped” cuprates prepared with high-pressure oxygen is T c values ≥ 50 K that often exceed that of optimally doped parent compounds, despite O stoichiometries that place the materials at the edge or outside of the conventional boundary between superconducting and normal Fermi liquid states. X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) measurements at 52 K on samples of high-pressure oxygen (HPO) YSr 2 Cu 2.75 Mo 0.25 O 7.54 , T c = 84 K show that the Mo is in the (VI) valence in an unusually undistorted octahedral geometry with predominantly Mo neighbors that is consistent with its assigned substitution for Cu in the chain sites of the structure. Perturbations of the Cu environments are minimal, although the Cu X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) differs from that in other cuprates. The primary deviation from the crystal structure is therefore nanophase separation into Mo- and Cu-enriched domains. There are, however, indications that the dynamical attributes of the structure are altered relative to YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 , including a shift of the Cu-apical O two-site distribution from the chain to the plane Cu sites. Another effect that would influence T c is the possibility of multiple bands at the Fermi surface caused by the presence of the second phase and the lowering of the Fermi level.

Validation of Continuous-Energy ENDF/B-VIII.0 16 O, 56 Fe, and 63,65 Cu Cross Sections for Nuclear Criticality Safety Applications

Recently completed cross-section evaluations sponsored in part by the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program were incorporated into the 2018 release of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 cross-section library. Evaluated isotopes of interest to the nuclear data and criticality safety community include 16 O, 56 Fe, and 63,65 Cu. For performance validation, benchmark models defined in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook were selected based on energy-integrated k eff sensitivities to total cross sections of interest and compared with experimental values. Of the 102 benchmark configurations that were utilized, 63 are sensitive to 16 O, 32 sensitive to 63,65 Cu, and 25 sensitive to 56 Fe. Selected benchmarks were modeled in SCALE 6.2.3 Criticality Safety Analysis Sequence (CSAS) continuous-energy Monte Carlo k eff calculations with ENDF/B-VII.1, with a hybrid ENDF/B-VII.1 with ENDF/B-VIII.0 data substituted for individual isotopes of interest, and with ENDF/B-VIII.0. ENDF/B-VIII.0 showed improved agreement with experimental k eff for 56 Fe, 63 Cu, elemental copper, and full library substitution while producing lessened agreement for 16 O and 65 Cu. Furthermore, with full library and isotope-specific ENDF/B-VIII.0 performance, a best-case ENDF library was formed by excluding underperforming isotopes’ ENDF/B-VIII.0 data, reverting 16 O and 65 Cu cross sections to ENDF/B-VII.1. This resulted in the average relative deviation between calculated and experimental data improving from 1.45σ for the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library to 1.32σ for the best-case library, relative to benchmark uncertainty.

Spatially resolved absolute densities of reactive species and positive ion flux in He-O 2 RF-driven atmospheric pressure plasma jet: touching and non-touching with dielectric substrate

Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are operating in direct contact with dielectric substrates for many applications. Nonetheless, many studies have been focusing on free jets. In this letter, we report spatially resolved measurements of reactive species including neutral and ionic species in an He + 1% O 2 RF-driven APPJ by molecular beam mass spectrometry equipped with a dielectric sampling plate, enabling to detect species densities for APPJ operating remotely or in direct contact with a substrate. Here, the spatially resolved distribution of O, O 2 (a 1 Δ g ) and O 3 is dominated by convection and, remarkably, shows minimum differences between touching and non-touching conditions.

Two-dimensional mapping of absolute OH densities in an atmospheric pressure plasma effluent via planar laser-induced fluorescence: effects of He/H 2 O and He/O 2 mixtures in N 2 and air, with and without solid targets

Planar laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) was employed to measure the absolute density of hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the effluent of the COST Reference Microplasma Jet for two feed gas mixtures: He/H 2 O and He/O 2 . Experiments were conducted with the effluent propagating into air and N 2 environments. For the He/H 2 O case, measurements were also performed with the effluent impinging on a solid target at varying distances from the jet nozzle. Calibration of the OH-LIF signal from the COST-Jet was achieved by comparing it to a reference signal generated by the photofragmentation of H 2 O 2 . Results demonstrated that OH densities were sustained longer when the effluent propagates in a nitrogen environment compared to air, particularly with water added to the feed gas. The broader OH distribution in N 2 suggests slower consumption due to the absence of oxygen, which accelerates OH depletion in air via reactions involving O 2 and HO 2 . Even when water was not added to the feed, as in the He/O 2 case, appreciable OH densities were observed, due to gas impurities and reactive species interactions with atmospheric humidity, forming reaction fronts that delineate the gas flow. Two-dimensional fluid dynamics simulations elucidated the influence of atmospheric gas entrainment and solid targets on the OH distribution. Experimental trends were further compared with a zero-dimensional chemistry model to explore OH production and consumption mechanisms in air and nitrogen environments.

Structure of amorphous materials in the NASICON system Na 1+x Ti 2 Si x P 3−x O 12

Abstract The structure of glasses in the sodium (Na) super-ionic conductor (NASICON) system Na 1 + x Ti 2 Si x P 3 − x O 12 with x = 0.8 and x = 1.0 was explored by combining neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction with 29 Si, 31 P and 23 Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The 29 Si magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra reveal that the silica component remains fully polymerized in the form of Si 4 units, i.e. the silicon atoms are bound to four bridging oxygen atoms. The 31 P{ 23 Na} rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR) NMR data suggest that the 31 P MAS NMR line shape originates from four-coordinated P n units, where n = 1, 2 or 3 is the number of bridging oxygen atoms per phosphorus atom. These sites differ in their 31 P- 23 Na dipolar coupling strengths. The results support an intermediate range order scenario of a phosphosilicate mixed network-former glass in which the phosphate groups selectively attract the Na + modifier ions. Titanium takes a sub-octahedral coordination environment with a mean Ti–O coordination number of 5.17(4) for x = 0.8 and 4.86(4) for x = 1.0. A mismatch between the P–O and Si–O bond lengths of 8% is likely to inhibit the incorporation of silicon into the phosphorus sites of the NASICON crystal structure.

Degenerate doping in B-Ga 2 O 3 Single Crystals through Hf-doping

n-type conductivity of β-Ga 2 O 3 grown from the melt is typically achieved using Sn and Si. In this paper, we experimentally and computationally investigate Hf doping of β-Ga 2 O 3 single crystals using UV–vis-NIR absorption and Hall effect measurements and hybrid functional calculations. Unintentionally-doped and Hf-doped samples with a nominal concentration of 0.5at% were grown from the melt using vertical gradient freeze and Czochralski method in mixed Ar + O 2 atmosphere. We demonstrate Hf dopants, predicted to incorporate on the octahedral GaII site as a shallow donor, achieve degenerate doping in β-Ga 2 O 3 with a measured electron concentration ~2 × 10 19 cm -3 , mobility 80–65 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , and resistivity down to 5 mΩ cm in our samples. The concentration of Hf was measured to be 1.3 × 10 19 atoms cm -3 using glow discharge mass spectroscopy on doped samples, confirming Hf to be the cause of n-type conductivity (electron concentration ~2 × 10 19 cm -3 ).

Ancient Origin of Acetyltransferases Catalyzing O -acetylation of Plant Cell Wall Polysaccharides

Abstract Members of the domain of unknown function 231/trichome birefringence–like (TBL) family have been shown to be O-acetyltransferases catalyzing the acetylation of plant cell wall polysaccharides, including pectins, mannan, xyloglucan and xylan. However, little is known about the origin and evolution of plant cell wall polysaccharide acetyltransferases. Here, we investigated the biochemical functions of TBL homologs from Klebsormidium nitens, a representative of an early divergent class of charophyte green algae that are considered to be the closest living relatives of land plants, and Marchantia polymorpha, a liverwort that is an extant representative of an ancient lineage of land plants. The genomes of K. nitens and Marchantia polymorpha harbor two and six TBL homologs, respectively. Biochemical characterization of their recombinant proteins expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 cells demonstrated that the two K. nitens TBLs exhibited acetyltransferase activities acetylating the pectin homogalacturonan (HG) and hence were named KnPOAT1 and KnPOAT2. Among the six M. polymorpha TBLs, five (MpPOAT1 to 5) possessed acetyltransferase activities toward pectins and the remaining one (MpMOAT1) catalyzed 2-O- and 3-O-acetylation of mannan. While MpPOAT1,2 specifically acetylated HG, MpPOAT3,4,5 could acetylate both HG and rhamnogalacturonan-I. Consistent with the acetyltransferase activities of these TBLs, pectins isolated from K. nitens and both pectins and mannan from M. polymorpha were shown to be acetylated. These findings indicate that the TBL genes were recruited as cell wall polysaccharide O-acetyltransferases as early as in charophyte green algae with activities toward pectins and they underwent expansion and functional diversification to acetylate various cell wall polysaccharides during evolution of land plants.

Electronic structure, and magnetic and superconducting pairing tendencies of the alternating single layer–bilayer stacking nickelate La 5 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 11 under pressure

Nickelates have continued to surprise since their unconventional superconductivity was discovered. Recently, the layered nickelate La 5 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 11 with hybrid single-layer and bilayer stacking showed superconductivity under high pressure. This compound combines features of single-layer La 2 ⁢NiO 4 and bilayer La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , but its pairing mechanism remains to be understood. Motivated by this finding, here we report a comprehensive theoretical study of this system. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that the undistorted P4/mmm phase without pressure is unstable due to three distortion modes. As pressure increases, these modes are suppressed, leading to the high-symmetry P4/mmm phase without NiO 6 octahedron tilting. Moreover, the “charge transfer” between the single-layer and bilayer sublattices was observed, leading to hole doping in the single-layer blocks. Our random-phase approximation calculations indicate a leading 𝑑 𝑥 2 −𝑦 2 -wave pairing state that arises from spin-fluctuation scattering between Fermi surface states mainly originating from the single-layer blocks and additional weaker contributions from the bilayer blocks. These spin fluctuations could be detected by inelastic neutron scattering as a strong peak at 𝐪 = (𝜋,𝜋). Our findings distinguish La 5 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 11 from other nickelate superconductors discovered so far and the high-𝑇 𝑐 cuprates. We also discuss both similarities and differences between La 5⁢ Ni 3 ⁢O 11 and other hybrid stacking nickelates.

Small Co-doping induced magnetic and electrical transitions in single crystal CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3

CaFe⁢O 3 and CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 single crystals were grown by combing floating-zone method with high oxygen pressure treatment. Both crystals show charge disproportionation of Fe (F⁡e 4+ → F⁡e 3+ + F⁡e 5+ ) accompanied by a metal-to-insulator transition as well as a crystal structural transformation from Pbnm to 𝑃⁢2 1 /𝑛. However, the slight introduction of Co significantly suppresses the critical temperature of charge disproportionation from 290 K in CaFe⁢O 3 to 260 K in CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 . Different from the single antiferromagnetic phase transition as observed in the polycrystalline CaFe⁢O 3 , two sequential antiferromagnetic transitions are found to occur in these two single crystals with the Néel temperatures around 119 and 112 K for CaFe⁢O 3 crystal and 109 and 98 K for CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal, respectively. Neutron diffraction illustrates the formation of a spiral antiferromagnetic structure. Moreover, as the temperature further decreases to 65 K, a third magnetic transition accompanied by a second electrical transition is observed in the slightly Co-doped CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal. In conclusion, first-principles calculations suggest that the introduction of a moderate amount of Co and the peculiar spiral spin texture play an important role in the presence of such new magnetic and electrical transitions.

Characterization of light-induced potentials in the strong-field dissociation of O 2 +

In this work, we investigate theoretically the imprints of light-induced potentials (LIPs) on the dissociation dynamics of O 2 + molecular ions, as observable in angle-resolved fragment kinetic-energy-release (KER) spectra. Following the vibrational and rotational dynamics of the initial pump-laser-excited cationic nuclear wave packet, while accounting for the dipole coupling between the O 2 + ( a 4 Π u ) and O 2 + ( f 4 Π g ) electronic states in 800-nm 40-fs probe-laser pulses with peak intensities between 10 13 and 10 14 W / cm 2 , we calculate angle-resolved KER spectra which reveal characteristic energy- and angle-dependent fringe structures. These fringes shift downward in energy as the molecular alignment angle θ relative to the probe-pulse polarization direction increases from 0 to π / 2 . The angle-dependent shifts in the KER fringes increase for larger probe-pulse peak intensities and follow the angle and light-wave-intensity dependence of the vibrational spectrum in the associated Floquet bond-hardening well, which is a manifestation of transient O 2 + nuclear-probability trapping in the LIP during dissociation. By examining the rovibrational dynamics of the dissociating molecular cation near the light-induced conical intersection (LICI) in the cationic LIP surface at θ = π / 2 , we identify related angle-dependent structures in the KER spectra, suggesting a means for assessing the significance of LICIs in molecular dissociation pathways.

Reconstruction of the Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ Fermi surface

The effects of structural supermodulation with the period $λ ≈ 26$ Å along the $b$ axis of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ have been observed in photoemission studies from the early days as the presence of “diffraction replicas” of the intrinsic electronic structure. Although predicted to affect the electronic structure of the Cu-O plane, the influence of supermodulation potential on Cu-O electrons has never been observed in photoemission. In the present study, we clearly see the effects on the Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ electronic structure; we observe a hybridization of the intrinsic bands with the supermodulation replica bands in the form of avoided crossings and a corresponding reconstruction of the Fermi surface. We estimate the hybridization gap, $2Δ_h ~ 25$ meV, in the slightly underdoped samples. The hybridization weakens with doping and the anticrossing can no longer be resolved in strongly overdoped samples. In contrast, the “shadow” replica, shifted by ($π , π$) , is found not to hybridize with the original bands within our detection limits.

Improper ferroelectricity in 134-type $AA_3'B_4\text{O}_{12}$ perovskites

The 134-type $\textit{A}$-site ordered LaMn 3 Cr 4 O 12 , that belongs to the family of $AA_3'B_4\text{O}_{12}$ perovskites, with cubic structure and magnetically driven improper polarization is puzzling because the conventional mechanisms leading to the creation of polarization in type-II multiferroics do not apply. By symmetry analysis and first-principles simulations in this work, we discover an original and previously overlooked energetic term that naturally explains the origin of improper polarization in LaMn 3 Cr 4 O 12 . In addition, we demonstrate the existence of three other energetic invariants in $AA_3'B_4\text{O}_{12}$ perovskites, for which other physical quantities (such as oxygen tiltings or shear strain) mediate the interaction between $\textit{G}$-type antiferromagnetic vectors to create and even enhance improper polarization.

Split Ga vacancies and the unusually strong anisotropy of positron annihilation spectra in β–Ga 2 O 3

We report a systematic first-principles study on positron annihilation parameters in the β–Ga 2 O 3 lattice and Ga monovacancy defects complemented with orientation-dependent experiments of the Doppler broadening of the positron-electron annihilation. We find that both the β–Ga 2 O 3 lattice and the considered defects exhibit unusually strong anisotropy in their Doppler broadening signals. This anisotropy is associated with low symmetry of the β–Ga 2 O 3 crystal structure that leads to unusual kind of one-dimensional confinement of positrons even in the delocalized state in the lattice. In particular, the split Ga vacancies recently observed by scanning transmission electron microscopy produce unusually anisotropic positron annihilation signals. Furthermore, we show that in experiments, the positron annihilation signals in β–Ga 2 O 3 samples seem to be often dominated by split Ga vacancies.

Noncollinear antiferromagnetic order in the buckled honeycomb lattice of magnetoelectric Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction

Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 exhibits a three-dimensional magnetic lattice based on the buckled honeycomb motif. It shows unusual magnetoelectric effects, including the sign change and nonlinearity. These effects cannot be understood without the detailed knowledge of the magnetic structure. Herein, we report neutron diffraction and direction-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 single crystals. In this work, below 20.3 K, we find a long-range antiferromagnetic order in the alternating buckled and flat honeycomb layers of Co 2+ ions stacked along the c axis. Within experimental accuracy, the magnetic moments lie in the ab plane. They form a canted antiferromagnetic structure with a tilt angle of ~14° at 15 K in the buckled layers, while the magnetic moments in each flat layer are collinear. This is directly evidenced by a finite (0, 0, 3) magnetic Bragg peak intensity, which would be absent in the collinear magnetic order. The magnetic space group is C2/c'. It is different from the previously reported C2/c' group, also found in the isostructural Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 . The revised magnetic structure successfully explains the major features of the magnetoelectric tensor of Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 within the framework of the spin-flop model.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7

In this report the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 is one of a series of gadolinium pyrochlore compounds with a variety of B-site cations. Despite the expected simplicity of a spin-only Gd 3+ Heisenberg interaction model, the gadolinium pyrochlore series exhibits various complex magnetic ground states at low temperature. Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 displays the highest temperature magnetic order of the series with $T_N$=1.6 K, which has been attributed to enhanced superexchange pathways facilitated by empty $5d$ $e_g$ Pt orbitals. In this study, we use various neutron scattering techniques on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline 160 Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 sample to examine the magnetic structure and spin-wave excitation spectrum below $T_N$ in order to extract the dominant exchange interactions. We find that the ground-state magnetic structure is the Palmer-Chalker state previously seen in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 with an associated gapped excitation spectrum consistent with enhanced exchange interactions between further near-neighbor Gd 3+ ions. We confirm this exchange model with analysis of the magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic regime using polarized neutrons.
