Understanding the Origin of Highly Selective CO 2 Electroreduction to CO on Ni,N‐doped Carbon Catalysts

Abstract Ni,N‐doped carbon catalysts have shown promising catalytic performance for CO 2 electroreduction (CO 2 R) to CO; this activity has often been attributed to the presence of nitrogen‐coordinated, single Ni atom active sites. However, experimentally confirming Ni−N bonding and correlating CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) activity to these species has remained a fundamental challenge. We synthesized polyacrylonitrile‐derived Ni,N‐doped carbon electrocatalysts (Ni‐PACN) with a range of pyrolysis temperatures and Ni loadings and correlated their electrochemical activity with extensive physiochemical characterization to rigorously address the origin of activity in these materials. We found that the CO 2 R to CO partial current density increased with increased Ni content before plateauing at 2 wt % which suggests a dispersed Ni active site. These dispersed active sites were investigated by hard and soft X‐ray spectroscopy, which revealed that pyrrolic nitrogen ligands selectively bind Ni atoms in a distorted square‐planar geometry that strongly resembles the active sites of molecular metal–porphyrin catalysts.

Prediction by Convolutional Neural Networks of CO 2 /N 2 Selectivity in Porous Carbons from N 2 Adsorption Isotherm at 77 K

Abstract Porous carbons are an important class of porous materials with many applications, including gas separation. An N 2 adsorption isotherm at 77 K is the most widely used approach to characterize porosity. Conventionally, textual properties such as surface area and pore volumes are derived from the N 2 adsorption isotherm at 77 K by fitting it to adsorption theory and then correlating it to gas separation performance (uptake and selectivity). Here the N 2 isotherm at 77 K was used directly as input (representing feature descriptors for the porosity) to train convolutional neural networks to predict gas separation performance (using CO 2 /N 2 as a test case) for porous carbons. The porosity space for porous carbons was explored for higher CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. Porous carbons with a bimodal pore‐size distribution of well‐separated mesopores (3–7 nm) and micropores (<2 nm) were found to be most promising. This work will be useful in guiding experimental research of porous carbons with the desired porosity for gas separation and other applications.

n ‐Type Rigid Semiconducting Polymers Bearing Oligo(Ethylene Glycol) Side Chains for High‐Performance Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Abstract N‐type conjugated polymers as the semiconducting component of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are still undeveloped with respect to their p‐type counterparts. Herein, we report two rigid n‐type conjugated polymers bearing oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains, PgNaN and PgNgN, which demonstrated an essentially torsion‐free π‐conjugated backbone. The planarity and electron‐deficient rigid structures enable the resulting polymers to achieve high electron mobility in an OECT device of up to the 10 −3 cm 2 V −1 s −1 range, with a deep‐lying LUMO energy level lower than −4.0 eV. Prominently, the polymers exhibited a high device performance with a maximum dimensionally normalized transconductance of 0.212 S cm −1 and the product of charge‐carrier mobility μ and volumetric capacitance C* of 0.662±0.113 F cm −1 V −1 s −1 , which are among the highest in n‐type conjugated polymers reported to date. Moreover, the polymers are synthesized via a metal‐free aldol‐condensation polymerization, which is beneficial to their application in bioelectronics.

Lactone Backbone Density in Rigid Electron-Deficient Semiconducting Polymers Enabling High n-type Organic Thermoelectric Performance

We report three lactone-based rigid semiconducting polymers were designed to overcome major limitations in the development of n-type organic thermoelectrics, namely electrical conductivity and air stability. Experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrated that increasing the lactone group density by increasing the benzene content from 0% benzene (P-0), to 50% (P-50), and 75% (P-75) resulted in progressively larger electron affinities (up to 4.37 eV), suggesting a more favorable doping process, when employing (N-DMBI) as the dopant. Larger polaron delocalization was also evident, due to the more planarized conformation, which is proposed to lead to a lower hopping energy barrier. As a consequence, the electrical conductivity increased by three orders of magnitude, to achieve values of up to 12 S/cm and Power factors of 13.2 μWm -1 K -2 were thereby enabled. These findings present new insights into material design guidelines for the future development of air stable n-type organic thermoelectrics.

C−N Coupling through Hydroaminoalkylation on a Single‐Atom Rh Heterogeneous Catalyst

Abstract C−N coupling is significant for the synthesis of fine chemicals toward various applications. Hydroaminoalkylation of olefins is a tandem reaction of C−N coupling involving first the formation of an aldehyde through hydroformylation of an olefin and then the production of amine through reductive amination of the aldehyde. Here we report a stable, supported catalyst of singly dispersed Rh 1 atoms anchored on TiO 2 (P25) nanoparticles designated as Rh 1 /P25. Its high activity for C−N coupling was demonstrated by six hydroaminoalkylations of olefins and amines with selectivity of higher than 90% for producing tertiary amines. The singly dispersed Rh 1 O 4 on P25 exhibit activity and selectivity for hydroaminoalkylation comparable or even higher than some reported molecular catalysts. In contrast to molecular catalysts, the Rh‐based single‐atom Rh heterogeneous catalysis (Rh 1 /P25) can be readily separated from reactants and products, reused for multiple runs of hydroaminoalkylation, and recycled with a low cost.

Heterogeneous Fe‐N‐C Cocatalyst for Hydroquinone Oxidation Enables Aerobic Oxidation of Primary Alcohols to Aldehydes

Abstract Benzoquinone (BQ) is commonly used as a cocatalyst in multi‐component catalyst systems for aerobic oxidation of organic molecules. Such methods often proceed by a redox cascade in which a secondary catalyst supports aerobic oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) to BQ. The present study shows that a commercially available non‐precious metal heterogeneous catalyst, PAJ‐Fe‐N‐C, is much more efficient than established homogeneous catalysts for aerobic oxidation of HQ to BQ, and this improved reactivity is crucial to support aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes with the homogeneous iridium catalyst, [Ir(trop 2 DAD]OTf (trop 2 DAD= N , N ‐bis(5‐ H ‐dibenzo[ a , d ]cycloheptene‐5‐yl)‐1,4‐diazabuta‐1,3‐diene). The combination of this heterogeneous/homogeneous catalyst system operates with Ir catalyst loadings as low as 0.05 mol % and turnover frequencies ≥350 h −1 .

Highly Crystalline and Porous Borocarbonitrides as Metal‐Free Catalysts for Boosted N‐Heterocycle Dehydrogenation

Safe and efficient hydrogen storage is pivotal for enabling a clean hydrogen economy. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) offer a practical solution, but their deployment is hindered by the lack of highly active and economical dehydrogenation catalysts. In this work, we report a metal‐free catalyst design that overcomes the long‐standing trade‐off between crystallinity and surface area in two‐dimensional frameworks for highly efficient dehydrogenation of LOHCs. A flux‐assisted reconstruction strategy transforms amorphous borocarbonitrides (AM‐BCN) into highly crystalline, defect‐rich BCN nanosheets (C‐BCN) with large surface area and accessible porosity, as confirmed by complementary spectroscopic, x‐ray, and neutron analyses. C‐BCN catalyzes the acceptor‐less dehydrogenation of aza‐fused LOHCs with quantitative hydrogen release under mild conditions, outperforming AM‐BCN and previously reported metal‐free scaffolds. Mechanistic insights from x‐ray, neutron scattering, and theoretical calculations identify open C‐B‐N and N‐B‐N defect motifs as the primary active sites. This work establishes a generalizable strategy to engineer crystalline, porous, defect‐rich two‐dimensional lattices and demonstrates a highly active metal‐free platform for LOHC dehydrogenation with high‐purity H 2 generation.

Boron-Made N 2 : Realization of a B$\equiv$B Triple Bond in the B 2 Al 3 – Cluster

Until now, all B≡B triple bonds have been achieved by adopting two ligands in the L→B≡B←L manner. Herein, we report an alternative route of designing the B≡B bonds based on the assumption that by acquiring two extra electrons, an element with the atomic number Z can have properties similar to those of the element with the atomic number Z + 2. Specifically, we show that due to the electron donation from Al to B, the negatively charged B≡B kernel in the B 2 Al 3 – cluster mimics a triple N≡N bond. Comprehensive computational searches reveal that the global minimum structure of B 2 Al 3 – exhibits a direct B–B distance of 1.553 Å, and its calculated electron vertical detachment energies are in excellent agreement with the corresponding values of the experimental photoelectron spectrum. Chemical bonding analysis revealed one σ and two π bonds between the two B atoms, thus confirming a classical textbook B≡B triple bond, similar to that of N 2 .

The isostructural clusters are formed of edge‐sharing octahedral {VO 5 N} and trigonal bipyramidal {MO 3 NCl} units. Diethanolamine ligates the bimetallic lacunary double cubane core of1and2in an unusual two‐mode fashion, unobserved previously. Dimetalloylene (M‐E‐M) Complexes of Heavier Main Group Elements Ge, Sn, Pb, Bi via Cleavage of E‐X Bonds (X=N(SiMe 3 ) 2 , O t Bu) with an Iridium Hydride

Abstract Reactions of the Ir V hydride [ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH 4 {BDI=(Dipp)NC(Me)CH(Me)CN(Dipp); Dipp=2,6‐ i Pr 2 C 6 H 3 } with E[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ] 2 (E=Sn, Pb) afforded the unusual dimeric dimetallotetrylenes ([ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH) 2 ( μ 2 ‐E) 2 in good yields. Moreover, ([ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH) 2 ( μ 2 ‐Ge) 2 was formed in situ from thermal decomposition of [ Me BDI Dipp ]Ir(H) 2 Ge[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ] 2 . These reactions are accompanied by liberation of HN(SiMe 3 ) 2 and H 2 through the apparent cleavage of an E−N(SiMe 3 ) 2 bond by Ir−H. In a reversal of this process, ([ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH) 2 ( μ 2 ‐E) 2 reacted with excess H 2 to regenerate [ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH 4 . Varying the concentrations of reactants led to formation of the trimeric ([ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH 2 ) 3 ( μ 2 ‐E) 3 . The further scope of this synthetic route was investigated with group 15 amides, and ([ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH) 2 ( μ 2 ‐Bi) 2 was prepared by the reaction of [ Me BDI Dipp ]IrH 4 with Bi(NMe 2 ) 3 or Bi(O t Bu) 3 to afford the first example of a “naked” two‐coordinate Bi atom bound exclusively to transition metals. A viable mechanism that accounts for the formation of these products is proposed. Computational investigations of the Ir 2 E 2 (E=Sn, Pb) compounds characterized them as open‐shell singlets with confined nonbonding lone pairs at the E centers. In contrast, Ir 2 Bi 2 is characterized as having a closed‐shell singlet ground state.

High‐pressure oxidation of n ‐butane

Abstract The oxidation of n ‐butane at elevated pressures has been investigated by experiments in a laminar flow reactor at 100 bar and temperatures of 450–900 K. The onset temperature for reaction increased from 550 K under oxidizing conditions (Φ = 0.02) to 625 K under reducing conditions (Φ = 13). NTC behavior was observed at 600–650 K (Φ = 0.02) and 625–675 K (Φ = 1.0). A detailed chemical kinetic model for the oxidation of n ‐butane was established. The present model and those suggested in literature were evaluated against the present experimental results and literature data at elevated pressures. None of the tested models could accurately reproduce the NTC behavior of n ‐butane under stoichiometric conditions of the present study, but all evaluated models could reproduce experimental data from literature with different levels of accuracy.

Multinuclear 1 H/ 13 C/ 15 N chemical shift assignment of therapeutic octreotide acetate performed at natural abundance

Abstract Octreotide acetate, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in the long‐acting release (LAR) drug product Sandostatin®, is a cyclic octapeptide that mimics the naturally occurring somatostatin peptide hormone. Modern NMR can be a robust analytical method to identify and quantify octreotide molecules. Previous 1 H chemical shift assignments were mostly performed in organic solvents, and no assignments for heteronuclear 13 C, 15 N, and aromatic 1 H nuclei are available. Here, using state‐of‐the‐art 1D and 2D homo‐ and heteronuclear NMR experiments, octreotide was fully assigned, including water exchangeable amide protons, in aqueous buffer except for 13 CO and 15 NH of F1, 15 NH of C2, and 15 NζHζof K5 that were not observed because of water exchange or conformational exchange. The solution NMR spectra were then directly compared with 1D 1 H/ 13 C/ 15 N solid‐state NMR (SSNMR) spectra showing the potential applicability of 13 C/ 15 N SSNMR for octreotide drug product characterization.

The N‐terminal intrinsically disordered region of Ncb5or docks with the cytochrome b 5 core to form a helical motif that is of ancient origin

Abstract NADH cytochromeb 5 oxidoreductase (Ncb5or) is a cytosolic ferric reductase implicated in diabetes and neurological conditions. Ncb5or comprises cytochromeb 5 (b 5 ) and cytochromeb 5 reductase (b 5 R) domains separated by a CHORD‐Sgt1 (CS) linker domain. Ncb5or redox activity depends on proper inter‐domain interactions to mediate electron transfer from NADH or NADPH via FAD to heme. While full‐length human Ncb5or has proven resistant to crystallization, we have succeeded in obtaining high‐resolution atomic structures of theb 5 domain and a construct containing the CS andb 5 R domains (CS/b 5 R). Ncb5or also contains an N‐terminal intrinsically disordered region of 50 residues that has no homologs in other protein families in animals but features a distinctive, conserved L 34 MDWIRL 40 motif also present in reduced lateral root formation (RLF) protein in rice and increased recombination center 21 in baker's yeast, all attaching to ab 5 domain. After unsuccessful attempts at crystallizing a human Ncb5or construct comprising the N‐terminal region naturally fused to theb 5 domain, we were able to obtain a high‐resolution atomic structure of a recombinant rice RLF construct corresponding to residues 25–129 of human Ncb5or (52% sequence identity; 74% similarity). The structure reveals Trp 120 (corresponding to invariant Trp 37 in Ncb5or) to be part of an 11‐residue α‐helix (S 116 QMDWLKLTRT 126 ) packing against two of the four helices in theb 5 domain that surround heme (α2 and α5). The Trp 120 side chain forms a network of interactions with the side chains of four highly conserved residues corresponding to Tyr 85 and Tyr 88 (α2), Cys 124 (α5), and Leu 47 in Ncb5or. Circular dichroism measurements of human Ncb5or fragments further support a key role of Trp 37 in nucleating the formation of the N‐terminal helix, whose location in the N/b 5 module suggests a role in regulating the function of this multi‐domain redox enzyme. This study revealed for the first time an ancient origin of a helical motif in the N/b 5 module as reflected by its existence in a class of cytochromeb 5 proteins from three kingdoms among eukaryotes.

Degradation and Accelerated Recovery of Surface Passivation in n+, p+, and Intrinsic Poly-Si/SiOx Passivating Contacts for Silicon Solar Cells

We report on the degradation and recovery of surface passivation of fired poly-Si/SiOx passivating contacts with hydrogen containing Al2O3 during annealing in the dark and under illumination. Upon firing to a peak temperature of 670 degrees C, the iVoc for symmetric test structures with n+, p+, and intrinsic poly-Si/SiOx contacts decreases due to a loss of surface passivation. Upon further annealing over the temperature range of 200-350 degrees C in the dark, depending on the type of doping, the surface passivation either shows further degradation followed by recovery, or direct recovery to the initial iVoc. Annealing at higher temperatures and/or higher illumination intensities accelerates the kinetics for both degradation and recovery processes. We show that the degradation and recovery processes are thermally activated and proceed identically in subsequent firing and annealing steps showing their cyclic nature. We present a series reaction model to explain the kinetics of degradation and recovery processes for n+ and intrinsic poly-Si/SiOx contacts. By fitting the model's rate expressions to the data, the determined effective activation energy barriers for degradation and recovery for n+ poly-Si/SiOx contacts in the dark are 1.24 and 1.51 eV, which are lowered under 7.5 Suns illumination to 0.76 and 1.15 eV, respectively.

Drell-Yan q T resummation of fiducial power corrections at N 3 LL

We consider Drell-Yan production pp → V*X → LX at small q T << Q, where q T and Q are the total transverse momentum and invariant mass of the leptonic final state L. Experimental measurements require fiducial cuts on L, which in general introduce enhanced, linear power corrections in q T /Q. We show that they can be unambiguously predicted from factorization, and resummed to the same order as the leading-power contribution. For the fiducial q T spectrum, they constitute the complete linear power corrections. We thus obtain predictions for the fiducial q T spectrum to N 3 LL and next-to-leading-power in q T /Q. Matching to full NNLO ($α$$^{2}_{s}$), we find that the linear power corrections are indeed the dominant ones, and once included by factorization, the remaining fixed-order corrections become almost negligible below q T ≲ 40 GeV. We also discuss the implications for more complicated observables, and provide predictions for the fiducial Φ* spectrum at N 3 LL+NNLO. We find excellent agreement with ATLAS and CMS measurements of q T and Φ*. We also consider the $p$$^{ℓ}_{T}$ spectrum. We show that it develops leptonic power corrections in q T /(Q – 2$p$$^{ℓ}_{T}$), which diverge near the Jacobian peak $p$$^{ℓ}_{T}$ ~ Q/2 and must be kept to all powers to obtain a meaningful result there. Doing so, we obtain for the first time an analytically resummed result for the $p$$^{ℓ}_{T}$ spectrum around the Jacobian peak at N 3 LL+NNLO. Our method is based on performing a complete tensor decomposition for hadronic and leptonic tensors. We show that in practice this is equivalent to often-used recoil prescriptions, for which our results now provide rigorous, formal justification. Our tensor decomposition yields nine Lorentz-scalar hadronic structure functions, which for Z/γ* → ℓℓ or W → ℓν directly map onto the commonly used angular coefficients, but also holds for arbitrary leptonic final states. In particular, for suitably defined Born-projected leptons it still yields a LO-like angular decomposition even when including QED final-state radiation. Finally, we also discuss the application to q T subtractions. Including the unambiguously predicted fiducial power corrections significantly improves their performance, and in particular makes them applicable near kinematic edges where they otherwise break down due to large leptonic power corrections.

Jet-veto resummation at N 3 LL p + NNLO in boson production processes

Vetoing energetic jet activity is a crucial tool for suppressing backgrounds and enabling new physics searches at the LHC, but the introduction of a veto scale can introduce large logarithms that may need to be resummed. We present an implementation of jet-veto resummation for color-singlet processes at the level of N 3 LL p matched to fixed-order NNLO predictions. Our public code MCFM allows for predictions of a single boson, such as Z/γ*, W ± or H, or with a pair of vector bosons, such as W + W – , W ± Z or ZZ. The implementation relies on recent calculations of the soft and beam functions in the presence of a jet veto over all rapidities, with jets defined using a sequential recombination algorithm with jet radius R. However one of the ingredients that is required to reach full N 3 LL accuracy is only known approximately, hence N 3 LL p . We describe in detail our formalism and compare with previous public codes that operate at the level of NNLL. Our higher-order predictions improve significantly upon NNLL calculations by reducing theoretical uncertainties. We demonstrate this by comparing our predictions with ATLAS and CMS results.
