Liquid-Vapor Coexistence and Critical Point of Mg 2 SiO 4 From Ab Initio Simulations
Hypervelocity impact-driven vaporization is characteristic of late-stage planet formation. Yet the behavior and properties of liquid-vapor mixtures of planetary materials of interest are typically unknown. Multiphase equations of state used in hydrodynamic simulations of planet impacts therefore lack reliable data for this important phenomenon. Here, we present the first constraints on the liquid-vapor critical point and coexistence phase boundary of Mg2SiO4 computed from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We found that the vapor is depleted in magnesium and enriched in silica and oxygen, while the coexisting liquid is enriched in magnesium and depleted in oxygen, from which we infer vaporization is incongruent. The critical point was estimated from an equation of state fit to the data. The results are in line with recent calculations of MgSiO3 and together confirm that extant multiphase equation of state (EOS) models used in planetary accretion modeling significantly underestimate the amount of supercritical material postimpact.

Modified floating-zone crystal growth of Mg 4 Ta 2 O 9 and its scintillation performance
Rods of single crystal MgTaO 9 were produced free of macroscopic defects and their scintillation properties including afterglow were measured. The compound characteristics make it a candidate for high energy X-ray radiography applications.
Polariton ring currents and circular dichroism of Mg-porphyrin in a chiral cavity
Placing aromatic molecules in a chiral optical cavity can break time-reversal symmetry and generate polariton ring currents with a linearly polarized pump. Such currents can be probed by circular dichroism, with one order of magnitude enhancement.
Enhanced H 2 recovery by coupling the water–gas shift reaction with in situ CO 2 capture and mineralization using earth abundant Ca- and Mg-silicates and hydroxides
Decarbonization of clean energy carriers such as H 2 by integrating multiphase chemical pathways with inherent carbon mineralization is a thermodynamically downhill approach designed for a sustainable energy and environmental future.
Kinetic and process modeling of Guerbet coupling chemistry over Cu–Mg–Al mixed oxides
Kinetic modeling of Guerbet coupling chemistry over a CuMgAlO x catalyst is presented. Integration of the model in a process simulation enables assessing a recycling strategy to optimize the production of diesel fuel precursors.
The role of iron in magnetic damping of Mg(Al,Fe) 2 O 4 spinel ferrite thin films
© 2020 Author(s). We have investigated magnesium aluminum ferrite thin films with a range of iron concentrations and identified the optimal iron content to obtain high crystalline quality thin films with the low magnetic damping required for spin current-based applications. Epitaxial MgAl 2-x FexO4 films with 0.8 < x < 2.0 were grown by pulsed laser deposition on single crystal MgAl2O4 substrates and were characterized structurally and magnetically. We find that the x = 1.5 composition minimizes the room-temperature magnetic damping with a typical Gilbert damping parameter of α eff = 1.8 × 10-3. This minimized damping is governed by a competition between the more robust magnetic ordering with increased iron content, x, and the more defective structure due to larger film-substrate lattice mismatch with increased iron content. The temperature-dependent magnetization curves indicate that Tc is suppressed below room temperature for iron content x ≤ 1.2 and eventually suppressed entirely for x = 0.8. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism results indicate that for all x the magnetic moment is dominated by Fe 3 + cations distributed in a 60:40 ratio on the octahedral and tetrahedral sites, with minimal contribution from Fe 2 + cations. Films with x = 1.4-1.6 exhibit very strong ferromagnetic resonance and low Gilbert damping with α eff = (1.8-6) × 10-3, making them ideal candidates for microwave and spintronic applications.
Measurements of inner-shell excited levels of Na-, Mg-, and Al-like europium on the LLNL EBIT
We report on a measurement of several n = 3 → n = 2 inner-shell transitions in sodiumlike, magnesiumlike, and aluminumlike europium, performed at the EBIT-I electron beam ion trap facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory using an x-ray calorimeter. Although the inner-shell x-ray lines of such M-shell ions are typically dominated by electric dipole allowed transitions, we have also identified a weak feature that appears to be the result of electric quadrupole decay in sodiumlike Eu 52+ . Here, we compare the measured transitions energies to the calculated values obtained using the flexible atomic code. We find agreement in most cases within 2 eV or better.
Two-photon double photoionization of atomic Mg by ultrashort pulses: Variation of angular distributions with pulse length
We investigate the two-photon double ionization of atomic magnesium induced by ultrashort pulses. Though the initial and final state symmetries are comparable to the same process in helium, in stark contrast the range of photon energies for which nonsequential ionization is the only open pathway is narrow (less than 1 eV) in magnesium. Thus several sequential ionization pathways feature heavily in these processes. Nonetheless, it is found that for pulse durations between 0.25 and 2.0 fentoseconds, the joint angular dependence of the ejected electrons can depend sensitively on pulse length, varying between the strictly back-to-back ejection characteristic of nonsequential ionization to other distributions. The significance of excited-state correlating configurations in representing the initial state of magnesium is discussed in the light of their consequences for the resulting angular distributions at photon energies where sequential ionization can access intermediate states that lie nearby in energy, particularly for longer pulses.
Ab initio lattice thermal conductivity of Mg Si O 3 across the perovskite-postperovskite phase transition
Lattice thermal conductivity (κ lat ) of MgSiO 3 postperovskite (MgPPv) under the Earth's lower mantle high pressure-temperature conditions is studied using the phonon quasiparticle approach by combing ab initio molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics simulations. Phonon lifetimes are extracted from the phonon quasiparticle calculations, and the phonon group velocities are computed from the anharmonic phonon dispersions, which, in principle, capture full anharmonicity. Here, it is found that throughout the lowermost mantle, including the D” region, κ lat of MgPPv is ~25% larger than that of MgSiO 3 perovskite (MgPv), mainly due to MgPPv's higher phonon velocities. Such a difference in phonon velocities between the two phases originates in the MgPPv's relatively smaller primitive cell. Systematic results of temperature and pressure dependences of both MgPPv's and MgPv's κ lat are demonstrated.
MgPd 2 Sb : A Mg-based Heusler-type superconductor
Here, we report the synthesis and physical properties of a full Heusler compound, MgPd 2 Sb, which we found to show superconductivity below T c = 2.2 K . MgPd 2 Sb was obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method and its purity and cubic crystal structure [Fm-3m, a = 6.4523(1) Å ] were confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction. Normal and superconducting states were studied by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results show that MgPd 2 Sb is a type-II, weak coupling superconductor ( λ e-p = 0.53 ). The observed pressure dependence of T c (ΔT c /p ≈ -0.23 K / GPa ) is one of the strongest reported for a superconducting Heusler compound. The electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon coupling in MgPd 2 Sb were theoretically investigated. The obtained results are in agreement with the experiment, confirming the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity. We compare the superconducting parameters to those of all reported Heusler-type superconductors.
