On stability theory

It is found that under mild assumptions, feedback system stability can be concluded if one can 'topologically separate' the infinite-dimensional function space containing the system's dynamical input-output relations into two regions, one region containing the dynamical input-output relation of the 'feedforward' element of the system and the other region containing the dynamical output-input relation of the 'feedback' element. Nonlinear system stability criteria of both the input-output type and the state-space (Liapunov) type are interpreted in this context. The abstract generality and conceptual simplicity afforded by the topological separation perspective clarifies some of the basic issues underlying stability theory and serves to suggest improvements in existing stability criteria. A generalization of Zames' (1966) conic-relation stability criterion is proved, laying the foundation for improved multivariable generalizations of the frequency-domain circle stability criterion for nonlinear systems.

Influence of clouds on UV-B penetration to the earth's surface

Radiometric measurements of cloud influence on ultraviolet B radiation (UV-B) were obtained. Mathematical models of the influence were defined to lay the groundwork for the construction of the global UV-B climatology from satellite determined ozone data. More refined measurements comparing UV-B radiation with total solar radiation were carried out. The cloudy case is referred to the cloudless sky irradiance and convenient transmission ratios are given An approach to the inversion of scattering data is summarized. An improved characterization of the UV-B radiation from a cloudless sky is also presented.

Novel approaches for alleviation of electrical hazards of graphite-fiber composites

Four basically different approaches were considered: gasification of fibers, retention in the matrix, clumping to prevent entrainment, and electrical insulation of fibers. The techniques used to achieve them are described in some detail. These involved surface treatment of fibers to improve the wettability of fibers and coating the fibers with the selected substances before laying them up for composite fabrication. Thermogravimetric analyses were performed on the plain and treated fibers in inert (nitrogen, argon) and reactive (air) atmospheres. The treated fibers embedded in epoxy were ignited in a Bunsen flame to determine the efficiency of these treatments. A simple apparatus was assembled to detect the time for the first short circuit (in a typical electrical circuit) when exposed to the combustion products from a graphite fiber composite fire. The state-of-the-art and treated fibers cast in typical epoxy were burned and ranked for potential success. It was inferred that the gasification schemes appear promising when reduction or oxidation is tried. It was also found that some very promising candidates were available for the clumping and for the electrical insulation of fibers.

Solid Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Technology Program

Work is reported on phase 5 of the Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE) Fuel Cell Technology Development program. The SPE fuel cell life and performance was established at temperatures, pressures, and current densities significantly higher than those previously demonstrated in sub-scale hardware. Operation of single-cell Buildup No. 1 to establish life capabilities of the full-scale hardware was continued. A multi-cell full-scale unit (Buildup No. 2) was designed, fabricated, and test evaluated laying the groundwork for the construction of a reactor stack. A reactor stack was then designed, fabricated, and successfully test-evaluated to demonstrate the readiness of SPE fuel cell technology for future space applications.

Tackifier for addition polyimides

A modification to the addition polyimide, LaRC-160, was prepared to improve tack and drape and increase prepeg out-time. The essentially solventless, high viscosity laminating resin is synthesized from low cost liquid monomers. The modified version takes advantage of a reactive, liquid plasticizer which is used in place of solvent and helps solve a major problem of maintaining good prepeg tack and drape, or the ability of the prepeg to adhere to adjacent plies and conform to a desired shape during the lay up process. This alternate solventless approach allows both longer life of the polymer prepeg and the processing of low void laminates. This approach appears to be applicable to all addition polyimide systems.

Ultimate strength of high-load-capacity composite bolted joints

Presented are the results of a series of tests initiated to obtain baseline data on the load-carrying capacity of bolted joints designed to carry large loads, specifically up to 222 kN (50 kips). The major testing purposes were to determine the load carrying capacity as a function of the width and thickness of the joint and the diameter and number of bolts, and to observe the failure mode. A total of 100 tests were conducted on three different specimen configurations. The specimens were fabricated from a T300/5208 fiber/resin system in a quasi-isotropic lay-up. The results presented indicate that for a given ratio of specimen width to hole diameter, the specimens with the smaller holes sustained a higher net-section tensile stress before failure. In addition, for a given ratio of specimen width to hole diameter, the thinner specimens withstood a higher net-section stress. No attempt has been made to correlate the results with theoretical predictions.

Synthetic aperture radar imaging of ocean waves - Comparison with wave measurements

Synthetic aperture radar images of ocean waves were obtained in conjunction with reference wave data near Marineland, Florida, December 14, 1975. Each of the various types of measurements were processed into a form that allowed direct comparisons with the others. Maxima of radar spectra occurred at the same frequencies as the maxima of reference wave height spectra. In a comparison of a radar spectrum with observed spectra of wave height, wave orbital velocity, and surface slope the high-frequency portion of the radar spectrum lay near and between the wave height and the orbital velocity spectra but differed significantly from the surface slope spectrum. The radar-derived mean directions and model-fitted directional spreads of wave energy were close to the values from a directional wave buoy and indicated the accuracy of radar measurements of wave direction. However, a directional plot of a radar spectrum near shore at the frequency of the maximum showed a sharper peak than such a plot of a fitted spectrum derived from reference data.

Improved Cable Grip Reduces Wear

Improved cable grip reduces wear due to sliding friction between cable and gripping surfaces. Drive wheels are grooved with a helical pattern that meshes with the lay of cable, analogous to a worm gear. Cable is gripped between drive wheels and guide rollers, and cable pull is exerted on the grip when drive wheels are slowed by hydraulic clutches. Cable grip may be applicable to cable-operated systems, such as ore trams in mines, overhead cable cars and ski lifts.

The 1977 tundra fire in the Kokolik River area of Alaska

Presumably caused by lightning, a large fire occurred due east of Point Lay several kilometers southwest of the Kokolik River, the farthest north a fire was ever fought by Bureau of Land Management personnel in Alaska. The progress and area extent of the fire were determined by analysis of LANDSAT MSS band 5 and 7 imagery. Low altitude observations from helicopter showed the fire burned a range of vegetation and relief types which included low polygonized and upland tussock tundras. The burned area appeared wetter on the surface than the unburned area, due to a lack of moisture absorbing organic matter and the possible release of moisture from the deeper thawed zone. Suggestions for future investigations of the effects of fire on tundra and permafrost terrains are discussed.

Screening of high temperature adhesives for large area bonding

High temperature-resistant adhesive systems were screened for processability, mechanical and physical properties, operational capability at 589 K (600 F), and the ability to produce large area bonds of high quality in fabricating Space Shuttle components. The adhesives consisted primarily of polyimide systems, including FM34B-18, NR-150B2 (DuPont), PMR-15, LARC-13, LARC-160, Thermid 600, and AI-1130L (AMOCA). The processing studies included preparation of polyimide resins, fabrication of film adhesives, development of lay-up and cure procedures, fabrication of honeycomb sandwich panels, and fabrication of mid-plane bonded panels in joints up to 30.5 cm (12 in.) wide. The screening program included tests for tack and drape properties, reticulation and filleting characteristics, ability to produce void-free or low porosity bonds in mid-plane bonded panels, out-time stability, lap shear strength, climbing drum peel strength, and glass transition temperature (Tg). This paper describes the processing methods developed and the test results.

Toward defining good writing: A rhetorical analysis of the words, sentences, and paragraphs in 16 industrial scripts

The assumption that teachers of technical writing agree on a definition of good writing was found to be without basis. Resolution of disagreements arising from close reading and textual analysis is described. Writing samples from corporate sources including IBM, ALCOA, Exxon, Weyerhaeuser, Bell Labs, Underwriters Laboratories, Dow Chemical, and US Steel were requested. A mixture of informative and persuasive examples, and examples directed at lay and specialist audiences were received. Analyses of 16 writing samples are reported. Analysis of word level, sentence level, and paragraph level, was completed. Syllabism, verb selection, nominalizations, vocabulary choices, t-units, subordination, sentence and clause length, syntactic order, patterns, development, topic sentences, propositional order, and transitions were analyzed.

The initial conceptualization and design of a meteorological satellite

The meteorological satellite had its substantive origin in the analytical process that helped initiate America's military satellite program. Its impetus lay in the desire to acquire current meteorological information in large areas for which normal meteorological observational data were not available on a day-to-day basis. Serious consideration was given to the feasibility of reconnaissance from meteorological satellites. The conceptualization of a meteorological satellite is discussed along with the early research which gave substance to that concept.

Multi-100 kW: Planar low cost solar array development

The applicability of selected low cost options to solar array blanket design was studied by fabricating representative modules and submitting them to thermal cycle environment. Large area (5.9 x 5.9 cm) solar cells of 3 varieties were purchased: (1) Standard wraparound, (2) Copper contacts substituted for the conventional Titanium-Palladium-Silver, and (3) Standard wraparound except with gridded back contact instead of continuous metallization. The baseline cell was purchased to compare fabrication cost and to serve as a control cell during test evaluation of the other two cells. All cells were assembled into either substrate modules where the cell is individually filtered and welded to an integrated Kapton-copper circuit or into a superstrate configuration with 4 cells jointly adhered to a single sheet of microsheet and then welded to the integrated Kapton-copper circuit. Cell quality, particularly in the metallization of contacts, was less than desired. Problems were encountered with copper metallization in laying down a barrier metal which would ohmically bond to the silicon. The cells received were shunted (sintered) or with low contact pull strength (non-sintered), thus leading to the decision to solder rather than weld the copper cells to the Kapton substrate.

Fabrication of advanced composites

Fabrication techniques for manufacturing advanced composite structures with continuous and short filaments in desired orientations and consolidation within the plies of the structure are described and analyzed. Attention is given to vacuum bag molding, autoclave molding, matched die consolidation of B/Al, B/epoxy, and graphite/epoxy composites, matched die molding of chopped fiber prepregs, thermal expansion molding, braiding, filament winding, sandwich fabrication, and pultrusions. Step-by-step preparation of resin-matrix composites is detailed, including automatic and semiautomatic lay-ups, and problems of quality control are discussed. The review is intended as an engineering aid for choices between competitive designs, and comprises factors other than technical features alone, such as cost effectiveness, ease of inspection, and economics of maintenance.
