New technique for preparation of metallographic samples makes interpretation of images of pores and microcracks more reliable. Involves use of vacuum epoxy infiltration and interference-film coating to reduce uncertainty. Developed for inspection of plasma-sprayed ceramic thermal-barrier coatings on metals but applicable to other porous, translucent materials, including many important ceramics.
Experimental nickel-base alloy exhibits exceptional low-cycle-fatigue strength in hydrogen. Alloy one of many intended to be produced by strategy of formulating compositions having potential for exceptional low-cycle-fatigue strength in air, casting these alloys into single crystals, and processing them in such ways that their microstructures contain minimal numbers of both sites favoring initiation of fatigue and sites having high surface energies for entrapment of, and infiltration by, hydrogen.
The time between storms, the duration of storms, and the storm depths are studied in relation to vegetation controls on the disposition of rainfall. It is proposed that understanding the movement of water between the vegetation and soil (including evapotranspiration and infiltration) will be the gateway for modeling atmospheric flux and improving global climate models. The overall objective goal of the proposed research effort is to develop a field/lab methodology which will provide a better understanding of vegetation induced water movement. Water flow initiated from stem flow of wooded slopes feeds soil water pathways, which in turn feed the deeper ground water system and give rise to stream response. This is balanced by more water inputs via throughfall, where it percolates the soil matrix and allows much greater rates of evapotranspiration and atmospheric/soil moisture flux. This research study seeks to gain an understanding of the effect of vegetation on soil moisture, and the effect of this differential wetting on resulting evapotranspiration and atmospheric flux.
An experimentally derived melt migration profile is compared with those obtained from compaction theory. A couple is prepared in which a source-for-melt (a disk composed of a silicate glass and olivine) was placed in contact with a sink-for-melt (a disk of polycrystalline olivine) in order to induce melt migration under laboratory conditions. It is noted that melt infiltrates into the sink disk along triple junctions driven by capillary forces. In order to analyze the melt migration profile in terms of compaction theory, the equations developed by McKenzie (1984) to describe porous flow of a liquid in a deformable matrix were modified. The bouyancy force term is replaced with a capillary force term and governing equations are then solved numerically with the initial boundary conditions specified by the experimental design. Also, it is determined that compaction theory provides a good description of the experimental results provided that the permeability of these solid-liquid materials increases linearly with increasing liquid fraction.
This paper examines the origin of the 20-50-cm-thick set of whitish limestone beds found immediately underlying the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary in Umbrian sections. On the basis of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) acquisitions and thermal demagnetization experiments, it is argued that the white beds were deposited under the same conditions as the underlying pink beds and that the anomalously low IRM intensities found in the white beds resulted from the reduction of hematite in the originally pink beds followed by the removal of the Fe(2+) ions. The whitening of the beds is ascribed to the consequence of downward infiltration of reducing waters resulting from the large quantity of organic matter produced by the extinctions at the K-T boundary. The white interval below the K-T boundary is thus compatible with the hypothesis of impact-triggered mass extinction.
The absorption characteristics of light and the optical technique of fluorescence microscopy for enhancing metallographic interpretation are presented. Characterization of thermally sprayed coatings by optical microscopy suffers because of the tendency for misidentification of the microstructure produced by metallographic preparation. Gray scale, in bright field microscopy, is frequently the only means of differentiating the actual structural details of porosity, cracking, and debonding of coatings. Fluorescence microscopy is a technique that helps to distinguish the artifacts of metallographic preparation (pullout, cracking, debonding) from the microstructure of the specimen by color contrasting structural differences. Alternative instrumentation and the use of other dye systems are also discussed. The combination of epoxy vacuum infiltration with fluorescence microscopy to verify microstructural defects is an effective means to characterize advanced materials and to assess structural integrity.
Process simulation models and cure monitoring sensors are discussed for use in optimal processing of fiber-reinforced composites. Analytical models relate the specified temperature and pressure cure cycle to the thermal, chemical, and physical processes occurring in the composite during consolidation and cure. Frequency-dependent electromagnetic sensing (FDEMS) is described as an in situ sensor for monitoring the composite curing process and for verification of process simulation models. A model for resin transfer molding of textile composites is used to illustrate the predictive capabilities of a process simulation model. The model is used to calculate the resin infiltration time, fiber volume fraction, resin viscosity, and resin degree of cure. Results of the model are compared with in situ FDEMS measurements.
Three-dimensional Nicalon SiC/SiC matrix composites made through a chemical vapor infiltration process were studied under tensile and flexural loading at 23, 1200, and 1550 C in air. In situ damage accumulation monitoring NDE techniques were utilized to identify failure mechanisms in these materials. The effectiveness and durability of a chemical vapor deposition SiC surface coating were also evaluated in severe oxidizing environment. Results show that the failure response was very similar for the 23 and 1200 C specimens, while at 1550 C there were significant changes in both the composite mechanical behavior and the matrix microstructure. Extensive fiber pull-out was observed only in the 1550 C specimen. It is also found that the SiC surface coating can protect the composite up to the critical matrix cracking strength.
The oxide-aluminum exothermic reduction reaction is presently used in the combustion-synthesis of ceramic/metal composites. An excess of Al is used in the reacting materials, which rapidly generate enough heat to exceed Al's melting point. The molten Al thus evolved is allowed to infiltrate the porous ceramic matrix as the exothermic reaction proceeds; this feature of the process turns the disadvantage of high porosity levels in combustion-synthesized materials into an advantage. Attention is given to the system obtained with 3TiO2 + 3B2O3 + (10-x)Al starting materials.
Nicalon silicon carbide 3D yarn with silicon carbide matrix composites made through a chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process were investigated under tensile and flexural loading at 23, 1200 and 1550 C in air. The effectiveness of a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) SiC surface coating was also evaluated in severe oxidizing environment. Acoustic emission sensors and in situ optical microscopy were used at room temperature to monitor the failure mechanisms. It is shown that the level of tensile stress at which nonlinear behavior begins is not drastically reduced at 1200 and 1550 C when composites were protected by a SiC surface coating. Extensive fiber pull-out was observed only in the 1550 C specimen. Similar behaviors were also found in flexural specimens.
The present volume discusses ceramics and ceramic-matrix composites in prospective aerospace systems, monolithic ceramics, transformation-toughened and whisker-reinforced ceramic composites, glass-ceramic matrix composites, reaction-bonded Si3N4 and SiC composites, and chemical vapor-infiltrated composites. Also discussed are the sol-gel-processing of ceramic composites, the fabrication and properties of fiber-reinforced ceramic composites with directed metal oxidation, the fracture behavior of ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs), the fatigue of fiber-reinforced CMCs, creep and rupture of CMCs, structural design methodologies for ceramic-based materials systems, the joining of ceramics and CMCs, and carbon-carbon composites.
Two high-char-yield polysiloxane polymers developed. Designated as TEOS-A and TEOS-B with silica char yields of 55% and 22%, respectively. These free-flowing polymers are Newtonium liquids instead of thick gels. Easily synthesized by controlled hydrolysis of inexpensive tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Adhesive properties of TEOS-A suggest its use as binder for fabrication of ceramic articles from oxide powders. Less-viscous and more-fluid lower-molecular-weight TEOS-B used to infiltrate already-formed porous ceramic compacts to increase densities without effecting shrinkage. Also used as paint to coat substrate with silica, and to make highly pure silicate powders.
Report describes experiments in chemical-vapor deposition of silicon carbide by pyrolysis of dimethyldichlorosilane in hydrogen and argon carrier gases. Directed toward understanding chemical-kinetic and mass-transport phenomena affecting infiltration of reactants into, and deposition of SiC upon, fabrics. Part of continuing effort to develop method of efficient and more nearly uniform deposition of silicon carbide matrix throughout fabric piles to make improved fabric/SiC-matrix composite materials.
The importance of textile composite materials in aerospace structural applications has been gaining momentum in recent years. With a view to better understand the suitability of these materials in aerospace applications, an experimental program was undertaken to assess the mechanical properties of these materials. Specifically, the braided textile preforms were infiltrated with suitable polymeric matrices leading to the fabrication of composite test coupons. Evaluation of the tensile properties and the analyses of the results in the form of strength moduli, Poisson's ratio, etc., for the braided composites are presented. Based on our past experience with the textile coupons, the fabrication techniques have been modified (by incorporating glass microballoons in the matrix and/or by stabilizing the braid angle along the length of the specimen with axial fibers) to achieve enhanced mechanical properties of the textile composites. This paper outlines the preliminary experimental results obtained from testing these composites.
The Convection and Precipitation/Electrification (CaPE) experiment took place in east central Florida from 8 July to 18 August, 1991. There were five research themes associated with CaPE. In broad terms they are: investigation of the evolution of the electric field in convective clouds, determination of meteorological and electrical conditions associated with lightning, development of mesoscale numerical forecasts (2-12 hr) and nowcasts (less than 2 hr) of convective initiation and remote estimation of rainfall. It is the last theme coupled with numerous raingage and streamgage measurements, satellite and aircraft remote sensing, radiosondes and other meteorological measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer that provide the basis for determining the hydrologic cycle for the CaPE experiment area. The largest component of the hydrologic cycle in this region is rainfall. An accurate determination of daily area-mean rainfall is important in correctly modeling its apportionment into runoff, infiltration and evapotranspiration. In order to achieve this goal a research plan was devised and initial analysis begun. The overall research plan is discussed with special emphasis placed on the adjustment of radar rainfall estimates to raingage rainfall.
The goal is to determine how microstructural factors, especially the architecture of microstructural factors, control fatigue damage in 3D reinforced polymer composites. Test materials were fabricated from various preforms, including stitched quasi-isotropic laminates, and through-the-thickness angle interlock, layer-to-layer angle interlock, and through-the-thickness stitching effect weaves. Preforms were impregnated with a tough resin by a special vacuum infiltration method. Most tests are being performed in uniaxial compression/compression loading. In all cases to date, failure has occurred not by delamination, but by shear failure, which occurs suddenly rather than by gradual macroscopic crack growth. Some theoretical aspects of bridging are also examined.
Titanium matrix composites (TMC) reinforced with carbon fibers are widely used in the aerospace industry due to their light weight, high strength and modulus and the retention of their strength and modulus at elevated temperatures. Liquid infiltration, a low cost technique for making TMCs, has been little used due to the extent of the reaction between titanium and carbon during fabrication. Rapid infrared processing (RIP) has been developed as a technique for reducing interfacial reaction during composite fabrication. The strength and modulus of composites produced using RIP were higher than or comparable to those for other composites. This paper examines the effect of heat treatment on the room temperature flexural strength and modulus of TMC produced using RIP. The experiments carried out are described and results are presented. Results showed increased flexural strength of the composites upon aging at temperatures of 800 and 900 degrees C. This increased strength may be due to increased strength of the matrix.
The effect of magma-xenolith interaction on the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic systematics was investigated by studying the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd variations in dissected crustal xenoliths sampled from different localities across Scotland. The Nd isotopic compositions were found to be virtually uniform across each xenolith, but significant variations were found in Rb, Sr, and REE concentrations, as well as in Rb/Sr and Sm/Nd ratios and Sr isotopic composition. Most of these variations appear to be inherited from the protolith, but, in one case, they have been modified by melt infiltration from the host magma. The results lend confidence to the interpretation of the isotopic and chemical compositions of xenoliths transported in basaltic magmas as reflecting their source regions, but they also highlight the potential problems of interpreting Sm-Nd model ages from metamorphic rocks.
