Device determines position of capacitive pickup relative to gravity-stabilized inductive element. Self nulling bridge with digital readout is faster and more accurate than electromechanical equivalent.
Device easily and economically records loads at instant of failure.
A new computational tool for physical calculations is described. It is the first computer system capable of performing indicial tensor calculus (as opposed to component tensor calculus). It is now operational on the symbolic manipulation system MACSYMA. The capabilities of the system are outlined.

The objective of the gas exchange experiment (GEX) in the Viking lander biology instrument package is to determine whether life exists in a 1-cc Martian soil sample delivered to it. The GEX is capable of maximum flexibility while protecting the indigenous organisms from exposure to physiologically incompatible medium. The discussion covers the biological premises implemented in the GEX, the requirements for the GEX M4 medium, the operational aspects of the incubation chamber, nonbiological and biological changes, and Antarctica soil experiment. Sources of biological gas changes are examined along with ways of differentiating biological gas changes from nonbiological ones. From cold incubation of low-frequency soils, it is concluded that decisive negative tests of GEX may require extended incubations beyond the nominal mission plan of 60 days, barring any outright information that negates the presence of life on Mars.

Verification of pedal operation is possible with tool that measures force and angular displacement. With tool, one can check both rudder- and break-pedal operation.
Various types of films were used to detect pre-Columbian archaeological sites in South Dakota. Natural color and color IR films (scale 1/10,000) provided the best interpretation medium.
After a strict 6 day confinement to bed of elderly and senile subjects the oxygen supply of the subcutaneous cellular tissue was impaired, and the intensity of its tissue respiration was somewhat reduced. The vacat-oxygen of the blood and urine, the coefficient of incomplete oxidation, and the oxygen deficiency in the organism were increased.
The most striking feature of the night sky in the tropics is the zodiacal light, which appears as a cone in the west after sunset and in the east before sunrise. It is caused by sunlight scattered or absorbed by particles in the interplanetary medium. The zodiacal light is the only source of information about the integrated properties of the whole ensemble of interplanetary dust. The brightness and polarization in different directions and at different colors can provide information on the optical properties and spatial distribution of the scattering particles. The zodiacal light arises from two independent physical processes related to the scattering of solar continuum radiation by interplanetary dust and to thermal emission which arises from solar radiation that is absorbed by interplanetary dust and reemitted mainly at infrared wavelengths. Attention is given to observational parameters of zodiacal light, the methods of observation, errors and absolute calibration, and the observed characteristics of zodiacal light.

As a possible predictive test for screening Space Shuttle passengers, the secretions of the pituitary adrenal system and the adrenal medulla have been studied in conjunction with exposure to gravitational acceleration three times the normal level. The 12 female subjects in the test were divided into ambulatory and bedrest groups. Before bedrest, a high tolerance to centrifugation appeared to be linked to increases in plasma ACTH and cortisol. This relationship did not hold after bedrest. The correlation between tolerance to centrifugation and 24-hour urinary epinephrine-to-norepinephrine ratios was not significant.

Questions regarding an interpretation of data from silicate melt inclusions are considered, taking into account the fragmental nature of the record, the possible effects of cooling rate on late-stage melt composition, and the crystallization of the trapped melt. New data related to 484 new analyses are provided in a separate table. Textural and mineralogical features and bulk chemical composition for an overall characterization of late-stage differentiates are discussed. A description is presented of a grouping and recognition of rock types on the basis of late-stage inclusion analyses. Attention is given to the bimodality of potassium values and the delineation of differentiation trends. It is found that many of the problems in interpretation and much of the scatter found in the composition of silicate melt inclusions in lunar samples can be attributed to the incomplete nature of the record and to crystallization after trapping.

An analysis of the shortening and lengthening of the phase of satellite-to-satellite (SST) data that passed within 40-700 km above the earth surface during its ATS-6 to GEOS-3 to ATS-6 path resulted in refractivity vs height profiles. The SST Doppler data were used directly to adjust the GEOS-3 orbit. Perturbations from the moon, sun, and a 15th-order/degree earth gravity field were included in the orbit solution. This orbit was continued through the occulation period and a model ionosphere was estimated by a least-squares adjustment of the Chapman ionosphere parameters from the SST data residuals. The refractivity profile obtained by this model ionosphere was compared to a refractivity profile obtained by a direct integral inversion of the SST data residuals. Systematic differences between the two methods were caused by orbital errors, which propagated into the solution.
