Superconducting phonon spectroscopy using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope

The low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) system described by LeDuc et al. (1987) was used to observe the phonon density of states effects in a superconductor. Using techniques based on those employed in macroscopic tunneling spectroscopy, electron tunneling current-voltage (I-V) spectra were measured for NbN and Pb, and dI/dV vs V spectra were measured using standard analog derivative techniques. I-V measurements on NbN and Pb samples under typical STM conditions showed no evidence for multiparticle tunneling effects.

Applications of nonlinear systems theory to control design

For most applications in the control area, the standard practice is to approximate a nonlinear mathematical model by a linear system. Since the feedback linearizable systems contain linear systems as a subclass, the procedure of approximating a nonlinear system by a feedback linearizable one is examined. Because many physical plants (e.g., aircraft at the NASA Ames Research Center) have mathematical models which are close to feedback linearizable systems, such approximations are certainly justified. Results and techniques are introduced for measuring the gap between the model and its truncated linearizable part. The topic of pure feedback systems is important to the study.

Nonaqueous chemical depth profiling of YBa2Cu3O(7-x)

A nonaqueous solution of Br in absolute ethanol (EtOH) has recently been reported to be effective at removing nonsuperconducting surface species from YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films, leaving the surface close to the ideal stoichiometry. This same etchant is shown here to be an effective bulk etchant in chemical depth profiling through 1-micron-thick films. The Cu remains in the 2 + oxidation state and the stoichiometry, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is close to ideal and nearly constant throughout the profile, indicating the absence of any large preferential etching effects. The reaction of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films with HF/EtOH, HCl/EtOH, and I/EtOH solutions is also reported.

NbN/MgO/NbN SIS tunnel junctions for submm wave mixers

The authors report on the fabrication and testing of all-refractory NbN/MgO/NbN SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) tunnel junctions for use as high-frequency mixers. Progress in the development of techniques for the fabrication of submicron-area tunnel junctions is described. Junction structures which have been investigated include mesa, crossline, and edge geometries. Using reactive sputtering techniques, NbN tunnel junctions with critical currents in excess of 104 A/sq cm have been fabricated with Vm values as high as 65 mV and areas down to 0.1 sq micron. Specific capacitance measurements on NbN/MgO/NbN mesa-type tunnel junctions give values in the range 60-90 fF/sq micron. These SIS tunnel junctions have been integrated with antennas and coupling structures for mixer tests in a waveguide receiver at 207 GHz. Preliminary mixer results are reported.

Reduced reactivity to air on HF-treated YBa2Cu3O(7-x)surfaces

Treatment of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films with a nonaqueous solution of HF in absolute ethanol results in the formation of an oxyfluoride with relative Y:Ba:Cu concentrations of 1:4:3 on the surface, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The passivation properties of chemically treated films were tested by monitoring the growth of the high binding energy O 1s peak, associated with nonsuperconducting surface species, as a function of air exposure time, for both HF-treated and untreated films. The native oxyfluoride is shown to reduce the reactivity of the superconductor to air.

NbN/MgO/NbN edge-geometry tunnel junctions

The fabrication and low-frequency testing of the first edge-geometry NbN/MgO/NbN superconducting tunnel junctions are reported. The use of an edge geometry allows very small junction areas to be obtained, while the all-NbN electrodes permit operation at 8-10 K with a potential maximum operating frequency above 1 THz. Edge definition in the base NbN film was accomplished utilizing Ar ion milling with an Al2O3 milling mask, followed by a lower energy ion cleaning step. This process has produced all-refractory-material tunnel junctions with areas as small as 0.1 sq micron, resistance-area products less than 21 ohm sq micron, and subgap to normal state resistance ratios larger than 18.

Optical properties of epitaxial CoSi2 and NiSi2 films on silicon

The optical constants of epitaxial films of CoSi2 and NiSi2, grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si(111), in the energy range of 0.9-4.0 eV have been measured. The behavior of the optical constants is characteristic of metals. It is Drude-like in low energy region and deviates from Drude behavior as interband transitions set in. Interband transitions are found to have already set in at 1 eV. The absorption varies significantly with energy, which has implications for photoresponse studies of internal photoemission in these material systems.

Identification of nonlinear systems

Given a Volterra series representations of an input-output system, the authors present a result concerning conditions under which there exists a feedback linearizable realization of the nonlinear system. In addition, they have developed a method to compute the unknown parameters in a canonical form realization from the known Volterra kernels. A finite number of parameters can be calculated from an associated finite number of the kernels. The authors restrict themselves to single-input, single-output continuous-time systems. It is assumed that the systems have real analytic state-space representations. The realization results are local, taking place a neighborhood of the origin in state space.

Wrapped Wire Detects Rupture Of Pressure Vessel

Simple, inexpensive technique helps protect against damage caused by continuing operation of equipment after rupture or burnout of pressure vessel. Wire wrapped over area on outside of vessel where breakthrough most likely. If wall breaks or burns, so does wire. Current passing through wire ceases, triggering cutoff mechanism stopping flow in vessel to prevent further damage. Applied in other situations in which pipes or vessels fail due to overpressure, overheating, or corrosion.

Monitoring Both Sides Of A Weld In Progress

Proposed remote vision system provides simultaneous viewing of front and back of workpiece while being welded. Enables human or automatic controller to monitor both weld pool on front and weld penetration on back. Nitrogen laser generates ultraviolet light, distributed to both sides of workpiece through two optical fiber cables. Image-intensifier tubes convert reflected ultraviolet light to visible light. Video cameras equipped with high-resolution charge-coupled devices convert visible outputs of image intensifiers into images for viewing on video monitors.

Context dependent anti-aliasing image reconstruction

Image Reconstruction has been mostly confined to context free linear processes; the traditional continuum interpretation of digital array data uses a linear interpolator with or without an enhancement filter. Here, anti-aliasing context dependent interpretation techniques are investigated for image reconstruction. Pattern classification is applied to each neighborhood to assign it a context class; a different interpolation/filter is applied to neighborhoods of differing context. It is shown how the context dependent interpolation is computed through ensemble average statistics using high resolution training imagery from which the lower resolution image array data is obtained (simulation). A quadratic least squares (LS) context-free image quality model is described from which the context dependent interpolation coefficients are derived. It is shown how ensembles of high-resolution images can be used to capture the a priori special character of different context classes. As a consequence, a priori information such as the translational invariance of edges along the edge direction, edge discontinuity, and the character of corners is captured and can be used to interpret image array data with greater spatial resolution than would be expected by the Nyquist limit. A Gibb-like artifact associated with this super-resolution is discussed. More realistic context dependent image quality models are needed and a suggestion is made for using a quality model which now is finding application in data compression.

Edge geometry superconducting tunnel junctions utilizing an NbN/MgO/NbN thin film structure

An edge defined geometry is used to produce very small area tunnel junctions in a structure with niobium nitride superconducting electrodes and a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier. The incorporation of an MgO tunnel barrier with two NbN electrodes results in improved current-voltage characteristics, and may lead to better junction noise characteristics. The NbN electrodes are preferably sputter-deposited, with the first NbN electrode deposited on an insulating substrate maintained at about 250 to 500 C for improved quality of the electrode.

Aerodynamic pressure and heating-rate distributions in tile gaps around chine regions with pressure gradients at a Mach number of 6.6

Surface and gap pressures and heating-rate distributions were obtained for simulated Thermal Protection System (TPS) tile arrays on the curved surface test apparatus of the Langley 8-Foot High Temperature Tunnel at Mach 6.6. The results indicated that the chine gap pressures varied inversely with gap width because larger gap widths allowed greater venting from the gap to the lower model side pressures. Lower gap pressures caused greater flow ingress from the surface and increased gap heating. Generally, gap heating was greater in the longitudinal gaps than in the circumferential gaps. Gap heating decreased with increasing gap depth. Circumferential gap heating at the mid-depth was generally less than about 10 percent of the external surface value. Gap heating was most severe at local T-gap junctions and tile-to-tile forward-facing steps that caused the greatest heating from flow impingement. The use of flow stoppers at discrete locations reduced heating from flow impingement. The use of flow stoppers at discrete locations reduced heating in most gaps but increased heating in others. Limited use of flow stoppers or gap filler in longitudinal gaps could reduce gap heating in open circumferential gaps in regions of high surface pressure gradients.

Wet chemical techniques for passivation of YBa2Cu3O7(7-x)

Wet chemical techniques are described for treatment of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) surfaces, resulting in the formation of native compounds with little or no reactivity to water. Promising native compounds include CuI, BaSO4, CuS, Cu2S, and the oxalates, all of which are either insoluble or have very low solubility in water. Treatment with dilute HI results in the formation of a native iodide film which is 80-90 percent CuI with small amounts of YI3 and BaI2. Treatment with dilute H2SO4 results in the formation of a film which is 95 percent BaSO4 and 5 percent Y2(SO4)3. Cu2S is formed on the surface with a dilute Na2S solution. An oxalate film with equal amounts of Y2(C2O4)3 and BaC2O4 results from treatment with dilute oxalic acid. X-ray photoelectron spectra show no significant changes when the sulfide, sulfate, or oxalate films are dipped in water, while the iodide film shows evidence of Cu(OH)2 formation.

Reaction of nonaqueous halogen solutions with YBa2Cu3O(7-x)

The reaction of the surfaces of the new high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-x) with nonaqueous halogen solutions is investigated, and the species formed in the reactions are identified. Treatment of films with HF/EtOH (EtOH = HI in absolute ethanol) results in the formation of an oxyfluoride with Y:Ba:Cu relative concentrations of 1:4:3. Results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of HF-treated films are consistent with the formation of CuF, a compound which does not exist in bulk form. Treatment of films with HCl/EtOH results primarily in the formation of BaCl2, with smaller amounts of YCl3, CuCl, and CuCl2. Treatment with Br2/EtOH or HBr/EtOH results in the formation of YBr3, BaBr2, and CuBr with relative concentrations of 1:4:3.

Hypersonic airbreathing vehicle design - Focus on aero-space plane

Creating a viable, 'aerospaceplane' airbreathing SSTO vehicle will require sophisticated configuration synthesis and a synergistic integration of advanced technologies across the spectrum of disciplines. In design exercises conducted to date, reductions in the fuel weight-fraction requirement can result from improvements in aerodynamics/controls, enhanced propulsion efficiencies, and trajectory optimization. Additional improvements in fuel-weight fraction can result from improvements in structural design, heat-management techniques, and materials properties.

Optical backscatter characteristics of Arctic polar stratospheric clouds

Airborne lidar measurements have been made of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) during the Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition in January-February 1989. These show the existence of a systematic relationship between the backscatter depolarization ratio and the (aerosol + molecular)/molecular backscatter ratio. The data are consistent with a two population PSC particle model.
