Orbiting astronomical observatory battery and power system design

The battery design of OAO-C (OAO-3) is given and consists of three-20 ampere hour 22 series connected cells in the battery. There are three batteries per spacecraft. The packaging configuration is described. The charging-discharging operations and the voltage potential of the battery system are discussed. Graphs are presented for the voltage limits (battery voltage versus temperature) and end of dark voltages (battery voltage versus ampere-hours discharged) of the battery system used on OAO-3. Data tables are also presented which give a summary of the battery performance and a comparison of OAO-3 with OAO A-2.

Synchronous meteorological and geostationary operational environmental satellites operational experience

The mode of operation that is of interest in this discussion is a solar array battery load-sharing mode. The battery is loaded for a fraction of a second and then charged, so the cycle is a 100 millisecond load, followed by a 500 millisecond charge. The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate the charge efficiency and the state of charge. Charge/discharge ratio graphs are presented.

The characteristics of sealed nickel-cadmium cells during voltage reversal

A mechanism which allows a cell voltage reversal in a nickel cadmium battery are discussed. The effects of reconditioning and the characteristics of Ni-Cd cells during voltage reversal at low overdischarge rates are outlined. Graphs are presented for: (1) hydrogen pressure decay-effect of state of charge (open circuit stand); (2) hydrogen pressure increase during overdischarge; (3) hydrogen pressure decay-effect of temperature (cells terminals connected through resistors); (4) cell, positive and negative electrode voltage during reversal when reconditioning a 13 cell-24-Ah battery pack through a 40 Omega resistor; (5) pressure discharge current and recombination current during voltage reversal when reconditioning a 13 cell-24-Ah battery pack through a 40 Omega resistor; (6) theoretical hydrogen gas pressure if there were no recombination; and (7) effect of hydrogen pressure on recombination rate during overcharge.

Infrared spectra of lunar soils

Measured data obtained by Michelson interferometer spectrometer were stored in a computer file and smoothed by being passed forward and backward through a digital four-pole low pass filter. Infrared spectra of the 10 lunar samples are presented in the format of brightness temperature versus frequency. The mol % of feldspar, pyroxene, olivine, ilmenite and ferromagnetic silicate in each sample is presented in tables. The reflectance spectra of ilmenite and enstatite are shown in graphs.

Turbulence characteristics of compressor discharge flows

Turbulence measurements were conducted in a large gas turbine engine (JT9D) at the entrance to the diffuser duct, joining the compressor discharge to the combustor inlet. Hot film probe and hot wire probe measurements were obtained at temperatures from 450K (350F) (idle) to 608K (635F) (rich approach). At I.D. (25 percent span) and mid-span locations, the turbulence intensity increased slightly from 6 + or - percent at idle condition to 7 or - 1 percent at rich approach. At O.D. (75 percent span) the turbulent intensity increased more rapidly, from 7.5 + or - 0.5 percent at idle to 15 + or - 0.5 percent at rich approach. The spectra showed turbulent energy distributed uniformly over a 0.1 to 5 KHz bandwidth (down 3db) at all operating conditions, corresponding to random turbulence with velocity wave lengths of 2 cm to 1 meter travelling at the mean velocity of 100 m/sec. Tests results are given in tables and graphs.

Effect of fuel sprays on emissions

A research gas turbine combustor was operated under realistic conditions such that the influence of individual variables (in particular, fuel spray characteristics) on emissions could be determined. The special combustor allows independent control over drop size, fuel-air ratio, air inlet temperature, pressure, reference velocity, and residence time. Also, it lends itself to theoretical modeling and turbulent intensity measurements through use of laser velocimetry. Emission results for a range of operations are presented. A number of graphs show which show the variations of emissions levels with one variable at a time are included. In every case, the fuel is jet A, the pressure is atmospheric, and combustion is limited to a primary zone.

Emissions measurements for a lean premixed propane/air system at pressures up to 30 atmospheres

A series of experiments was conducted in which the emissions of a lean premixed system of propane and air were measured at pressures of 5, 10, 20 and 30 atm in a flametube apparatus. Measurements were made for inlet temperatures between 600K and 1000K and combustor residence times from 1.0 to 3.0 msec. A schematic of the test rig is presented along with graphs showing emissions measurements for nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and UHC as functions of bustor residence time for various equivalence ratios, entrance temperatures and pressures; typical behavior of emissions as a function of equivalence ratio for a fixed residence time. Correlations of nitric oxide emission index with adiabatic flame temperature for a fixed residence time of 2 msec and pressures from 5 to 30 atm; and adiabatic flame temperature corresponding to CO breakpoint conditions for 2 msec residence time as a function of inlet temperature.

Using coal inside California for electric power

In a detailed analysis performed at Southern California Edison on a wide variety of technologies, the direct combustion of coal and medium BTU gas from coal were ranked just below nuclear power for future nonpetroleum based electric power generation. As a result, engineering studies were performed for demonstration projects for the direct combustion of coal and medium BTU gas from coal. Graphs are presented for power demand, and power cost. Direct coal combustion and coal gasification processes are presented.

Computation of minimum noise aircraft landing trajectories

Efforts to reduce aircraft noise perceived by residents during landing are reported. Steps in the development of the aircraft aerodynamic model, noise model, population model, performance index, and optimization procedure are reviewed. The optimal trajectories from the three main near-terminal entry points are presented via tables and graphs. The recommendation is that these minimal noise trajectories be tested as reference trajectories for the terminally configured aircraft to fly along.
