Gas dynamics in barred spirals - Gaseous density waves and galactic shocks

Steady-state gasdynamical studies, previously limited to tightly wound normal spiral galaxies, are extended to models of barred spirals with a 5% to 10% perturbing potential. The models show that a strong wave manifestation is an important constituent of the bar structure in many barred spirals and that a density-wave shock wave can form a bar structure as pronounced as the narrow bars often evident in optical photographs of barred spirals. The dark narrow dust lanes often observed along the leading edges of bar structures are identified as tracers of shocks, and it is found that strong shocks along a bar structure during even a small part of a galaxy's lifetime might easily deplete a large enough proportion of the gas to cause a lack of gas in the inner annuli encompassing the bar by the time of the present epoch. It is emphasized that even moderate-amplitude barlike perturbations in the disk can drive large noncircular gas motions, typically 50 to 150 km/s.

The dynamics and stability of radiatively driven gas clouds. I - Plane-parallel slabs

A combination of numerical and analytical techniques has been used to investigate the dynamics and stability of optically thin plane-parallel radiatively driven slabs of gas confined by the thermal gas pressure of a high-temperature low-density medium. Scaling laws allow the individual model 'clouds' to be characterized by a single free parameter, chi, a normalized column density which measures the strength of the acceleration due to radiation pressure relative to that due to thermal gas pressure. It is found that these clouds are stable and coherently accelerated only when chi is small. In this regime a simple slab model is constructed which accurately reproduces the more complex gasdynamic results. The low-chi clouds are marginally able to reach the high velocities seen in the atmospheres of quasi-stellar objects, but only if their motion is subsonic with respect to the external confining medium. This implies either that the medium is extremely hot and tenuous or that it is moving outward with the clouds.

A gas chromatographic air analyzer fabricated on a silicon wafer

A miniature gas analysis system has been built based on the principles of gas chromatography (GC). The major components are fabricated in silicon using photolithography and chemical etching techniques, which allows size reductions of nearly three orders of magnitude compared to conventional laboratory instruments. The chromatography system consists of a sample injection valve and a 1.5-m-long separating capillary column, which are fabricated on a substrate silicon wafer. The output thermal conductivity detector is separately batch fabricated and integrably mounted on the substrate wafer. The theory of gas chromatography has been used to optimize the performance of the sensor so that separations of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures are performed in less than 10 s. The system is expected to find application in the areas of portable ambient air quality monitors, implanted biological experiments, and planetary probes.

Observations of interstellar helium with a gas absorption cell - Implications for the structure of the local interstellar medium

A photometer sensitive at the 584 A line of He 1, incorporating a helium gas resonance absorption cell, was flown on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July 1975. The instrument observed much of the night-time sky, and returned 42 min of usable data. The data were analyzed by fitting to a model of resonant scattering of solar 584 A flux from nearby interstellar helium. Good model fits were obtained for an interstellar gas bulk velocity vector pointing toward alpha = 72 deg, delta = +15 deg, with speed 20 km/s, with interstellar medium temperatures from 5000 to 20,000 K and with neutral interstellar helium density (8.9 plus or minus 10 to the -3rd/cu cm). In the context of theoretical studies of the interstellar medium by McKee and Ostriker (1977), the results may indicate that the sun lies in the warm, partially ionized periphery of a cold interstellar cloud, surrounded by a high-temperature gas heated by old supernova remnants.

Pioneer Venus Sounder Probe gas chromatograph

The design logic, construction, function, and data processing of the Pioneer Venus Sounder Probe gas chromatograph instrument are discussed. A gas chromatograph for the analysis of the chemical composition of the lower atmosphere of Venus was included in the Sounder Probe of the Pioneer Venus mission. This paper describes the design logic of the gas chromatograph as constrained by the mission; attention is given to instrument construction, function, and data reduction.

Collisions between grains in a turbulent gas

Turbulent gas motions will induce random velocities of small dust grains that are imbedded in the gas. Within large eddies the friction forces from the gas lead to strongly correlated velocities for neighboring grains, whereas small eddies cause uncorrelated grain motions. The nonlinear response of a grain to eddy motion is calculated. This leads to a turbulent pressure within the dust component as well as to collisions between pairs of grains. The results are evaluated numerically for a Kolmogoroff spectrum and turbulent collision rates are calculated for molecular clouds and protostellar environments. Whereas grain-grain collisions should not modify the initial size distribution in molecular clouds to a significant extent, they will lead to an entirely different grain population in protostars.

The retention of hot gas in elliptical galaxies

The X-ray emission is interpreted from the fast-moving elliptical galaxy M86 (Forman et al. 1979) as evidence for the accumulation of an extensive gaseous envelope. The gas within this envelope is relatively hot, yet has until now been confined to the galaxy by the thermal pressure of the outer atmosphere of the Virgo cluster. The ram pressure of the intracluster gas in the cluster core is now stripping this envelope away. It is suggested that significant quantities of hot gas may be found in many elliptical galaxies.

On the equilibrium structures of self-gravitating masses of gas containing axisymmetric magnetic fields

The general equations describing the equilibrium shapes of self-gravitating gas clouds containing axisymmetric magnetic fields are presented. The general equations admit of a large class of solutions. It is shown that if one additional (ad hoc) asumption is made that the mass be spherically symmetrically distributed, then the gas pressure and the boundary conditions are sufficiently constraining that the general topological structure of the solution is effectively determined. The further assumption of isothermal conditions for this case demands that all solutions possess force-free axisymmetric magnetic fields. It is also shown how the construction of aspherical (but axisymmetric) configurations can be achieved in some special cases, and it is demonstrated that the detailed form of the possible equilibrium shapes depends upon the arbitrary choice of the functional form of the variation of the gas pressure along the field lines.

Distorted radio sources in Abell 2255 - Evidence of intergalactic gas 2.5 to 5 megaparsecs from the cluster center

Spectroscopic data are presented for radio galaxies in the A2255 region. The results indicate that the galaxies associated with distorted radio sources 2.5-5 Mpc projected radius from the cluster center are indeed cluster members. This implies the presence of substantial intergalactic gas 10-20 core radii from the cluster center. Reasonable assumptions concerning the gas distribution result in an estimated minimum mass for the A2255 intracluster gas of 4 x 10 to the 14th solar masses.

Gas release and conductivity modification studies

The behavior of gas clouds produced by releases from orbital velocity in either a point release or venting mode is described by the modification of snowplow equations valid in an intermediate altitude regime. Quantitative estimates are produced for the time dependence of the radius of the cloud, the average internal energy, the translational velocity, and the distance traveled. The dependence of these quantities on the assumed density profile, the internal energy of the gas, and the ratio of specific heats is examined. The new feature is the inclusion of the effect of the large orbital velocity. The resulting gas cloud models are used to calculate the characteristics of the field line integrated Pedersen conductivity enhancements that would be produced by the release of barium thermite at orbital velocity in either the point release or venting modes as a function of release altitude and chemical payload weight.

Similarity solutions of a strong shock wave propagation in a mixture of a gas and dusty particles

The similarity solutions of a strong shock wave propagation in a mixture of a gas and small solid particles have been investigated. Similarity solution exists only when the shock is very strong and the surrounding medium is of a constant density and at rest and with negligible counterpressure. The non-dimensional fundamental equations are derived and studied. The results depend on three non-dimensional parameters; i.e. (1) the ratio of the specific heats of the gas, (2) the mass concentration of the solid particles in the mixture and (3) the ratio of the density of the solid to that of initial density of the gas. Numerical solutions for various values of these parameters are presented and discussed. The speeds of the shock wave front and its location with various energy releases are given.

Dust-to-gas ratio in the outer regions of spiral galaxies

Some spiral galaxies are surrounded by extended clouds of neutral hydrogen; if dust is associated with this gas, the dust should appear as a faint extended reflection nebula illuminated by the light from the entire galaxy. It is suggested that observations of the surface brightness of the outer regions of M83 and M101 could be worthwhile, since these two galaxies are bright and have extended surrounding gas clouds. Such studies would be of interest with regard to the possible presence of faint extended halos of stars around galaxies, the extent of the metallicity gradients in galaxies, and the value of the dust-to-gas ratio in quasar absorption-line systems.

Gas diffusion in multibubble systems

A model is proposed for the study of the growth and shrinkage of gas bubbles in systems containing many gas bubbles. The key feature of this model is the replacement of the bubbles by point sources of gas concentration. Calculations are performed in the simple case of an initial uniform array of bubbles of equal radii.

Direct nuclear excitation of a He-3 - CO2 gas mixture

Probe measurements using a continuous wave CO2 laser have been carried out on a He-3 - CO2 gas mixture directly excited by the He-3(n,p)H-3 reaction. At a gas pressure of 1 atm and thermal neutron flux up to 10 to the 17th n/sq cm sec, total extinction of the probe beam was observed. Addition of N2 to the gas mixture (up to 20%) produced a media such as is used in electric discharge CO2 lasers. However, this mixture produced the same results as the He-3 - CO2 mixture. Absorption of the laser beam indicates that with direct nuclear excitation, it is the lower laser level which is excited. Therefore direct nuclear pumping of a CO2 laser does not appear feasible.

Preliminary Results of Cyclical De-Icing of a Gas-Heated Airfoil

An NACA 65(sub 1)-212 airfoil of 8-foot chord was provided with a gas-heated leading edge for investigations of cyclical de-icing. De-icing was accomplished with intermittent heating of airfoil segments that supplied hot gas to chordwise passages in a double-skin construction. Ice removal was facilitated by a spanwise leading-edge parting strip which was continuously heated from the gas-supply duct. Preliminary results demonstrate that satisfactory cyclical ice removal occurs with ratios of cycle time to heat-on period (cycle ratio) from 10 to 26. For minimum runback, efficient ice removal, and minimum total heat input, short heat-on periods of about 15 seconds with heat-off periods of 260 seconds gave the best results. In the range of conditions investigated, the prime variables in the determination of the required heat input for cyclical ice removal were the air temperature and the cycle ratio; heat-off period, liquid water content, airspeed, and angle of attack had only secondary effects on heat input rate.
