Dynamic, robust, radiation-resistant ceramics: harnessing thermodynamic and kinetic driving forces (Final Report)

The overarching objective of this project was to establish a class of structural ceramics with enhanced radiation tolerance based on a dynamic microstructure by harnessing the synergistic effects of radiation enhanced diffusion, capillarity and thermally induced mass transport on microstructural evolution. Specifically, we aimed to quantify changes in mass transport behavior that may influence the microstructural evolution of ionic/covalent ceramic materials subjected to irradiation.

EBSD seed LDRD project: Does Corona Virus – 2019 (COVID-19) and Seasonal Flu have similar meteorology and air quality controls driving their spread?

Seasonal influenza and Influenza like Illnesses (ILI) pose a serious public health risk and in turn affect the economy. Various factors affect ILI cases and mortality, including the pathogen and its interaction with the host, as well as environmental and socioeconomic factors such as meteorology, household structure, air pollution, urbanization, and population. Despite the growing number of studies on influenza and ILI, challenges remain in forecasting the timing of seasonal onset, outbreak patterns, and key factors affecting transmission. In particular, the impacts of meteorology and air quality on ILI have been challenging to understand, with linear regression studies focused on different geographic regions producing contradictory results. For example, influenza seasonality has been associated with cold-dry conditions in temperate mid-latitudes, but with humid-rainy conditions in tropical climates. These apparently contradictory results imply that the relationships between influenza cases and atmospheric variables may be too complex to be captured by linear regression models. In this seed project, we analyze meteorology and air quality variables from numerical models to determine which atmospheric variables are most helpful in predicting weekly changes in recorded flu cases. In contrast to most previous studies that relied on linear regression analysis to predict the timing of the flu onset or peak, we employ a robust machine learning algorithm to evaluate the contribution of atmospheric variables to weekly changes in recorded ILI cases. These results may also be relevant to the spread of other respiratory illnesses such as Corona Virus Disease – 2019 (COVID-19).

Driving the Shift to Energy-Efficient and Climate-Responsible Commercial Refrigeration Equipment in Chile

This report provides an overview of global and Chile-specific market trends, technological advancements, and policy developments related to commercial refrigeration equipment, with an emphasis on refrigerated display cabinets. Section 2 examines CRE market trends at the global and Chilean levels. Section 3 presents CRE energy consumption and the latest technological options for improving energy performance. It also discusses low global warming potential (GWP)1 refrigerant options for CRE. Section 4 provides a cost-effectiveness analysis. Section 5 reviews other regional energy efficiency standards and labeling programs and offers potential standard requirements for Chile. Section 6 concludes the report by summarizing key findings and conclusions. Finally, Appendix A provides detailed guidelines intended as a starting point to inform policies and programmes.

Indications of flat bands driving the δ to α volume collapse of plutonium

On cooling from the melt, plutonium (Pu) undergoes a series of structural transformations accompanied by a ≈ 28% reduction in volume from its δ phase to its α phase at low temperatures. While Pu’s partially filled 5f -electron shells are known to be involved, their precise role in the transformations has remained unclear. By using calorimetry measurements on α-Pu and gallium-stabilized δ-Pu combined with resonant ultrasound and X-ray scattering data to account for the anomalously large softening of the lattice with temperature, we show here that the difference in electronic entropy between the α and δ phases dominates over the difference in phonon entropy. Rather than finding an electronic specific heat characteristic of broad $f$-electron bands in α-Pu, as might be expected to occur within a Kondo collapsed phase in analogy with cerium, we find it to be indicative of flatter subbands. An important role played by Pu’s 5$f$ electrons in the formation of its larger unit cell α phase comprising inequivalent lattice sites and varying bond lengths is therefore suggested.

Driving Uptake for Energy Efficiency Financing Programs: Marketing and Outreach, Partnership Networks, and Program Design Considerations

Many energy efficiency financing programs could achieve greater uptake and impact by more effectively recruiting participants. This report examines some of the primary factors that have contributed to high participant uptake among successful financing programs. We review best practices in partnerships (Chapter 2), direct marketing (Chapter 3), and program design (Chapter 4) that facilitate robust participation. This report is primarily designed for state and local governments that have established energy efficiency financing programs or are considering doing so and are seeking insight into how they can ramp up program participation. In disseminating lessons learned from well-established programs that have experienced success in their target markets, the objective is to help scale up the large number of energy efficiency financing programs that seek to replicate these successes. This report can inform states, local governments, and other entities that will establish or expand clean energy financing programs with funding made available under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act.

Three-dimensional simulations of magneto-inertial Magnetic-Direct-Drive targets

For the cylindrically symmetric targets that are normally fielded on the Z machine, two dimensional axisymmetric MHD simulations provide the backbone of our target design capability. These simulations capture the essential operation of the target and allow for a wide range of physics to be addressed at a substantially lower computational cost than 3D simulations. This approach, however, makes some approximations that may impact its ability to accurately provide insight into target operation. As an example, in 2D simulations, targets are able to stagnate directly to the axis in a way that is not entirely physical, leading to uncertainty in the impact of the dynamical instabilities that are an important source of degradation for ICF concepts. In this report, we have performed a series of 3D calculations in order to assess the importance of this higher fidelity treatment on MagLIF target performance.

Driving Affordable Decarbonization: Inclusive Utility Program Designs for Disadvantaged Communities

Our research team worked with 17 utility partners from various U.S. regions to study current utility program practices. We identified the key characteristics of these programs and the challenges and opportunities in implementing them. Through our research, we provide a pragmatic, design-oriented, and customer-centered perspective for effective program design and implementation. We identify 13 successful characteristics of program design that may be considered by utility partners.
