Real-Time Object Recognition in Color Imagery

Military test ranges containing unexploded ordnance due to live-fire testing and training exercises are a significant safety problem in many locations.

The Colors of Young Asteriods

Recent spectral observations of asteriods have identified a plausible origin for the ordinary chondrite meteorites (OCs). Owing to the paucity of main-belt asteriods with matching spectra [1], it had previously been difficult to explain their origin.

Design and Expected Performance of GISMO-2, a Two Color Millimeter Camera for the IRAM 30 m Telescope

We present the main design features for the GISMO-2 bolometer camera, which we build for background-limited operation at the IRAM 30 m telescope on Pico Veleta, Spain. GISMO-2 will operate simultaneously in the 1 and 2 mm atmospherical windows. The 1 mm channel uses a 32 × 40 TES-based backshort under grid (BUG) bolometer array, the 2 mm channel operates with a 16 × 16 BUG array. The camera utilizes almost the entire full field of view provided by the telescope. The optical design of GISMO-2 was strongly influenced by our experience with the GISMO 2mm bolometer camera, which is successfully operating at the 30 m telescope. GISMO is accessible to the astronomical community through the regularIRAMcall for proposals.

Recommendations on Future Science and Engineering Studies for Ocean Color

The Ocean Health Index measured Ecological Integrity as the relative condition of assessed species in a given location. This was calculated as the weighted sum of the International Union for Conservation of Natures (IUCN) assessments of species. Weights used were based on the level of extinction risk following Butchart et al.2007: EX (extinct) 0.0, CR (critically endangered) 0.2, EN (endangered) 0.5, VU (vulnerable) 0.7, NT (not threatened) 0.9, and LC (least concern) 0.99. For primarily coastal goals, the spatial average of these per pixel scores was based on a 3nmi buffer; for goals derived from all ocean waters, the spatial average was computed for the entire EEZ.

Optimizing Retrieval Spaces of Bio-Optical Models for Remote Sensing of Ocean Color

We investigated the optimal number of independent parameters required to accurately represent spectral remote sensing reflectances (𝑅 rs ) by performing principal component analysis on quality controlled in situ and synthetic 𝑅 rs data. We found that retrieval algorithms should be able to retrieve no more than four free parameters from 𝑅 rs spectra for most ocean waters. In addition, we evaluated the performance of five different bio-optical models with different numbers of free parameters for the direct inversion of in-water inherent optical properties (IOPs) from in situ and synthetic 𝑅 rs data. The multi-parameter models showed similar performances regardless of the number of parameters. Considering the computational cost associated with larger parameter spaces, we recommend bio-optical models with three free parameters for the use of IOP or joint retrieval algorithms.
