Integrated autopilot/autothrottle for the NASA TSRV B-737 aircraft: Design and verification by nonlinear simulation

An integrated autopilot/autothrottle was designed for flight test on the NASA TSRV B-737 aircraft. The system was designed using a total energy concept and is attended to achieve the following: (1) fuel efficiency by minimizing throttle activity; (2) low development and implementation costs by designing the control modes around a fixed inner loop design; and (3) maximum safety by preventing stall and engine overboost. The control law was designed initially using linear analysis; the system was developed using nonlinear simulations. All primary design requirements were satisfied.

Implementation of Ada protocols on Mil-STD-1553 B data bus

Standardization activity of data communication in avionic systems started in 1968 for the purpose of total system integration and the elimination of heavy wire bundles carrying signals between various subassemblies. The growing complexity of avionic systems is straining the capabilities of MIL-STD-1553 B (first issued in 1973), but a much greater challenge to it is posed by Ada, the standard language adopted for real-time, computer embedded-systems. Hardware implementation of Ada communication protocols in a contention/token bus or token ring network is proposed. However, during the transition period when the current command/response multiplex data bus is still flourishing and the development environment for distributed multi-computer Ada systems is as yet lacking, a temporary accomodation of the standard language with the standard bus could be very useful and even highly desirable. By concentrating all status informtion and decisions at the bus controller, it was found to be possible to construct an elegant and efficient harware impelementation of the Ada protocols at the bus interface. This solution is discussed.

Analysis of spatially resolved IUE spectra of 0957+561A,B: A gravitationally lensed double quasar

A study of 18 IUE spectra of the gravitationally lensed quasar, 0957+561A,B was used to search for time delays between light variation in the 2 components. Evidence for substantial, rapid variability in Component A in 1980, followed by a light variation in the other component 20 months later is found. However, it is argued that these variations do not record the same event in the quasar, and so, cannot be used to derive a value for the Hubble constant. The cause of the rapid variation in Component A in 1980 is not understood, but it does not appear to be a microlensing event.

Environmental noise characteristics of the MOD5-B (3.2 MW) wind turbine generator

Both narrow band and broad band acoustic data were obtained for the MOD5-B wind turbine for a range of wind speeds from 5.8 to 14.3 m/s; for a range of power outputs from 300 to 3100 kW; and for various azimuth angles and distances. Comparisons are made with those of other large machines and with predictions by available methods. The highest levels occur at the lower frequencies and generally decrease as the frequency increases. Low frequency rotational noise components were more intense than expected for an upwind machine and are believed to result from localized wind gradients across the rotor disk due to upwind terrain features. Predicted broad band spectra follow the general trends of the data but tend to underestimate the levels in the frequency range where the turbulent boundary layer-trailing edge interaction noise is expected to be significant.

VLBI observations of the gravitational lens system 0957+561 - Structure and relative magnification of the A and B images

Gravitationally lensed images of the quasar 0957+561 have been observed at 13 cm wavelength using a six-antenna VLBI array with nearly milliarcsecond resolution. Models of the observed surface brightness distribution of each of the A and B images provide support of the gravitational lens hypothesis. A value of the magnitude of the relative image magnification A/B of 0.64 + or - 0.03 is obtained.

Radio observations in the fields of COS-B gamma ray sources. IV - First quadrant sources

The field of five COS-B gamma-ray sources in the first galactic quadrant have been mapped using the Effelsberg radio telescope at several frequencies. Candidate objects as potential radio counterparts of gamma-ray sources are discussed in the light of current observations; however, mostly being due to the crowded nature of the radio fields, no clear identification has been possible.

Comparison of Shuttle Imaging Radar-B ocean wave image spectra with linear model predictions based on aircraft measurements

During October 1984, coincident Shuttle Imaging Radar-B synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery and wave measurements from airborne instrumentation were acquired. The two-dimensional wave spectrum was measured by both a radar ocean-wave spectrometer and a surface-contour radar aboard the aircraft. In this paper, two-dimensional SAR image intensity variance spectra are compared with these independent measures of ocean wave spectra to verify previously proposed models of the relationship between such SAR image spectra and ocean wave spectra. The results illustrate both the functional relationship between SAR image spectra and ocean wave spectra and the limitations imposed on the imaging of short-wavelength, azimuth-traveling waves.

Ocean wave directional spectra and wave-current interaction in the Agulhas from the Shuttle Imaging Radar-B synthetic aperture radar

SIR-B synthetic aperture radar ocean-wave spectra for a 200-km pass crossing the Agulhas current off the coast of Africa are analyzed. A significant enhancement of one spectral peak along the northern edge of the current is attributed both to amplification of the waves by refraction-dominated wave-current interaction and to transient specular backscatter contributions spatially correlated to the waves.

The evolution of complex type B Allende inclusion - An ion microprobe trace element study

Results are presented of a detailed trace-element and isotopic analyses of the constituent phases in each of the major textural parts (mantle, core, and islands) of a Type B refractory inclusion, the USNM 5241 inclusion from Allende, first described by El Goresy et al. (1985). The REE data on 5241 were found to be largely consistent with a model in which the mantle and the core of 5241 formed sequentially out of a single melt by fractional crystallization. The numerical models of REE evolution in the 5241 melt, especially that of Eu, require that a significant mass of spinel-free island material was assimilated into the evolving melt during the last half of the solidification history of 5241. The trace element results pbtained thus strongly support the interpretation of El Goresy et al. (1985) that the spinel-free islands in the 5241 are trapped xenoliths.

Modification of Altitude Wind Tunnel for Icing and Propulsion Research Study, Part B

This report describes the results of an engineering study conducted for NASA-Lewis Research Center on Modifications to the Altitude Wind Tunnel (AWT) for Icing and Propulsion Research by DSW Engineering Corporation, Orlando, Florida and DSMA International Inc., Toronto, Canada. The engineering study referred to as study 'Part B' has been carried out under authorization of NASA Contract NAS 3-22933 (Ref. 1). The scope of work defined in the Statement of Work 3-169855 (Ref. 2) Revised 2/20/81 was discussed in detail with NASA on October 2, 1981 and covers the following areas: - Fan and Fan Housing. This includes assessment of circuit loss analyses, fan aerodynamics and mechanical conceptual design of variable and fixed pitch fans considering fixed and variable inlet guide vanes. - Fan Drive Systems - considering fixed and variable speed drives with continuous rating of 30,000 HP with overload capability of 45,000. The drive shaft between the motor and fan is to be considered and also the existing foundations for the main drive motor. - 20 ft.Test Section Arrangement - having slotted wall configurations suitable for testing at transonic velocities, with various model support systems required for the anticipated models and tests. A model handling concept aimed for high productivity testing and means for quick access to the model in the test section between test runs. - 45 ft. Test Section - feasible and practical approach for model installation and removal.

Application of fracture mechanics and half-cycle method to the prediction of fatigue life of B-52 aircraft pylon components

Stress intensity levels at various parts of the NASA B-52 carrier aircraft pylon were examined for the case when the pylon store was the space shuttle solid rocket booster drop test vehicle. Eight critical stress points were selected for the pylon fatigue analysis. Using fracture mechanics and the half-cycle theory (directly or indirectly) for the calculations of fatigue-crack growth ,the remaining fatigue life (number of flights left) was estimated for each critical part. It was found that the two rear hooks had relatively short fatigue life and that the front hook had the shortest fatigue life of all the parts analyzed. The rest of the pylon parts were found to be noncritical because of their extremely long fatigue life associated with the low operational stress levels.

COS-B gamma ray sources beyond the predicted diffuse emission

COS-B data were reanalyzed using for background subtraction the modeled galactic diffuse gamma-ray emission based on HI- and CO-line surveys and the gamma-ray data itself. A methodology was developed for this purpose with the following three features: automatic generation of source catalogs using correlation analysis, simulation of trials to derive significance thresholds for source detection, and bootstrap sampling to drive error boxes and confidence intervals for source parameters. The analysis shows that about half of the 2CG sources are explained by concentrations in the distribution of molecular hydrogen. Indication for a few weak new sources is also obtained.

Medium-resolution studies of extreme ultraviolet emission from N2 by electron impact - Vibrational perturbations and cross sections of the c4-prime 1Sigma(+)u and b-prime 1Sigma(+)u states

In a crossed-beam experiment the electron-impact-induced fluorescence spectrum of N2 in the extreme ultraviolet is studied at a spectral resolution of up to 0.03 nm. The optically thin experiment obtained the highest-resolution electron-impact emission spectrum of the Rydberg and valence states of N2. The spectral measurements provide the emission cross sections of each of the vibrational transitions of the Carroll-Yoshino and the Birge-Hopfield-II band systems. Laboratory vibrational-excitation cross sections arising from the mutual perturbation of the c4-prime 1Sigma(+)u and b-prime 1Sigma(+)u states by homogeneous configuration interactions are measured from 10 to 400 eV, and a modified Born approximation analytic model is given for them. The analysis leads to accurate band-system oscillator strengths. The relative emission and excitation cross sections each of the vibrational levels are compared. In addition, low-resolution measurements of the cross section of the atomic dissociation fragments (NI, NII, NIII) from 40 to 102 nm are made, and medium-resolution measurements are made of the emission cross section of the c4 1Pi(u), c5-prime 1Sigma(+)u, c5 1Pi(u), and c6-prime 1Sigma(+)u to X 1Sigma(+)g (0,0) transitions.

Response of gravity level fluctuations on the Gravity Probe-B spacecraft propellant system

Time-dependent computations have been performed to investigate the dynamical behaviors of fluid under a microgravity environment. A computer algorithm is introduced which can be used to simulate the fluid behavior in that environment, in particular the excitation of sloshing waves due to different gravity environments and rotation speeds. A suggestion on the proper handling and managing of cryogenic fluid propellant to be used in the Gravity Probe-B spacecraft propulsion is made.
