Applying Anodic Stripping Voltammetry to Complex Wastewater Streams for Rapid Metal Detection (Final Report)

The overall objective of this project is the development of a lab-on-a-chip (LOC) electrochemical sensor capable of accurately measuring heavy metal (lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As)) concentrations in complex aqueous streams such as wastewater. The specific goals include: i) identify how heavy metal speciate and transform during the different stages of the wastewater treatment train, and explore pre-treatment methods that will de-complex heavy metals, making them available to ASV, ii) develop appropriate electrodes for ASV using organic/inorganic nanomaterials, and iii) integrate pre-treatment steps and specialized electrodes into an LOC sensor device capable of autonomously determining heavy metal concentrations in complex wastewater streams.

Research on high power, doped titanium-niobium oxide anodes

The main objective of this project is to synthesize titanium niobium oxide (TNO) that has a nanoporous structure with porous channels for rapid lithium diffusion, enabling extreme fast charging (XFC). The focus of this project is to improve the electronic conductivity and ion diffusion coefficient in TNO to achieve high capacities under extreme fast charge conditions. In addition, electrolytes with additives will be formulated to promote stable interphase formation on the NMC cathode surface to improve long cycling stability.

CalTestBed - OnTo Technology - Characterization of Recycled Cathode and Anode Particles as a Function of Process Step (Final Report)

Onto Technology carries out advanced Li-ion battery recycling for industry and. has the only patented technology to produce manufacturing quality electrode materials from recycled batteries. The technology can resolve ongoing cost problems for the industry in life-cycle and conservation of critical materials. Under the Cal TestBed program, Onto Technology teamed with principal investigators at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, who performed tests to evaluate the electrochemical performance of refurbished electrode materials. Other tests to determine structure and morphology of the refurbished materials carried out at LBNL included X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
