The rebrightening of a ROSAT -selected tidal disruption event: repeated weak partial disruption flares from a quiescent galaxy?

The ROSAT-selected tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate RX J133157.6-324319.7 (J1331) was detected in 1993 as a bright [0.2–2 keV flux of (1.0 ± 0.1) × 10 -12 erg s -1 cm -2 ], ultra-soft (kT = 0.11 ± 0.03 keV) X-ray flare from a quiescent galaxy (z = 0.051 89). During its fifth all-sky survey (eRASS5) in 2022, Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG)/ eROSITA detected the repeated flaring of J1331, where it had rebrightened to an observed 0.2–2 keV flux of (6.0 ± 0.7) × 10 -13 erg s -1 cm -2 , with spectral properties (kT = 0.115 ± 0.007 keV) consistent with the ROSAT-observed flare ~30 yr earlier. In this work, we report on X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and radio observations of this system. During a pointed XMM observation ~17 d after the eRASS5 detection, J1331 was not detected in the 0.2–2 keV band, constraining the 0.2–2 keV flux to have decayed by a factor of ≳40 over this period. Given the extremely low probability (~5 × 10 -6 ) of observing two independent full TDEs from the same galaxy over a 30 yr period, we consider the variability seen in J1331 to be likely caused by two partial TDEs involving a star on an elliptical orbit around a black hole. J1331-like flares show faster rise and decay time-scales [$\mathcal {O}(\mathrm{d})$] compared to standard TDE candidates, with negligible ongoing accretion at late times post-disruption between outbursts.

Cosmology from weak lensing, galaxy clustering, CMB lensing, and tSZ – I. 10 × 2pt modelling methodology

ABSTRACT The overlap of galaxy surveys and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments presents an ideal opportunity for joint cosmological data set analyses. In this paper we develop a halo model-based method for the first joint analysis combining these two experiments using 10 correlated two-point functions (10 × 2pt) derived from galaxy position, galaxy shear, CMB lensing convergence, and Compton-y fields. We explore this method using the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Simons Observatory (SO) as examples. We find such LSS × CMB joint analyses lead to significant improvement in Figure-of-Merit of Ωm and S8 over the constraints from using LSS-only probes within Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. We identify that the shear–y and y–y correlations are the most valuable additions when thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dolvich (tSZ) is included. We further identify the dominant sources of halo model uncertainties in the small-scale modelling, and investigate the impact of halo self-calibration due to the inclusion of small-scale tSZ information.

Emergence of unconventional spin glass-like state in κ–(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl by introducing weak randomness

Recently, Urai et al. reported that an antiferromagnetic long-range-ordered state in κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl changes into a quantum spin liquid via an unconventional spin glass-like state as randomness is introduced by x-ray irradiation. In this work, we focused on the spin glass-like state and conducted a detailed investigation into it using 13 C-NMR measurements on 150-h x-ray-irradiated κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl. We found that the spin glass-like state is composed of two components: the major component inherits the spin structure of nonirradiated κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl, whereas the minor component differs from that of nonirradiated κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl. We also found that in the spin glass-like state, spin moments fluctuate very slowly around stable directions even at low temperatures, which is very likely related to the Griffiths physics.

Weak itinerant magnetic phases of La 2 Ni 7

La 2 Ni 7 is an intermetallic compound that is thought to have itinerant magnetism with small moment (~0.15 µ B /Ni) ordering below 65 K. A recent study of single crystal samples by Ribeiro et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 105, 014412 (2022)] determined detailed anisotropic H-T phase diagrams and revealed three zero-field magnetic phase transitions at T 1 ~61.0 K, T 2 ~56.5 K, and T 3 ~42 K. In that study only the highest temperature phase is shown to have a clear ferromagnetic component. Here we present a single crystal neutron diffraction study determining the propagation vector and magnetic moment direction of the three magnetically ordered phases, two incommensurate and one commensurate, as a function of temperature. The higher temperature phases have similar, incommensurate propagation vectors, but with different ordered moment directions. At lower temperatures the magnetic order becomes commensurate with magnetic moments along the c direction as part of a first-order magnetic phase transition. In this study, we find that the low-temperature commensurate magnetic order is consistent with a proposal from earlier DFT calculations.

Workhorse minimally empirical dispersion-corrected density functional with tests for weakly bound systems: r 2 SCAN + rVV 10

SCAN+rVV10 has been demonstrated to be a versatile van der Waals (vdW) density functional that delivers good predictions of both energetic and structural properties for many types of bonding. Recently, the r 2 SCAN functional was devised as a revised form of SCAN with improved numerical stability. In this work, we refit the rVV10 functional to optimize the r 2 SCAN+rVV10 vdW density functional and test its performance for molecular interactions and layered materials. Our molecular tests demonstrate that r 2 SCAN+rVV10 outperforms its predecessor SCAN+rVV10 in both efficiency (numerical stability) and accuracy. This good performance is also found in lattice-constant predictions. In comparison with benchmark results from higher-level theories or experiments, r 2 SCAN+rVV10 yields excellent interlayer binding energies and phonon dispersions for layered materials.

4 d element induced improvement of structural disorder and development of weakly reentrant spin-glass behavior in NiRuMnSn

The pursuit of efficient spin polarization in quaternary Heusler alloys with the general formula XX'YZ (where X, X', and Y are transition metals and Z is a p-block element) has been a subject of significant scientific interest. While previous studies showed that isoelectronic substitution of a 4d element in place of a 3d element in quaternary Heusler alloys improves the half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics, our research here, on the quaternary Heusler alloy NiRuMnSn, reveals a strikingly different scenario. In this study, we present a detailed structural analysis of the material using x-ray absorption fine structure and neutron diffraction techniques which confirms the formation of a single-phase compound with 50:50 site disorder between Ni and Ru atoms at 4c and 4d sites. Contrary to expectations, our density functional theory calculations suggest a considerable decrease in spin polarization even in the ordered structure. Additionally, we report on the compound's exceptional behavior, displaying a rare reentrant spin-glass property below ~ 60 K, a unique and intriguing feature for quaternary Heusler-type compounds.

Slowly decaying zero mode in a weakly nonintegrable boundary impurity model

The transverse field Ising model (TFIM) on the half-infinite chain possesses an edge zero mode. This work considers an impurity model: TFIM perturbed by a boundary integrability-breaking interaction. For sufficiently large transverse field, but in the ordered phase of the TFIM, the zero mode is observed to decay. The decay is qualitatively different from zero modes where the integrability-breaking interactions are nonzero all along the chain. It is shown that for the impurity model, the zero mode decays by relaxing to a nonlocal quasiconserved operator, the latter being exactly conserved when the opposite edge of the chain has no noncommuting perturbations so as to ensure perfect degeneracy of the spectrum. In the thermodynamic limit, the quasiconserved operator vanishes, and a regime is identified where the decay of the zero mode obeys Fermi's golden rule. Furthermore, a toy model for the decay is constructed in Krylov space and it is highlighted how Fermi's golden rule may be recovered from this toy model.

Weak-coupling theory of neutron scattering as a probe of altermagnetism

Inelastic neutron scattering provides a powerful probe of the magnetic excitations of quantum magnets. Altermagnets have recently emerged as a new class of magnets with vanishing net magnetization characteristic of antiferromagnets and with a spin-split electronic structure typical of ferromagnets. Here we introduce a minimal Hubbard model with two-sublattice orthorhombic anisotropy as a framework to study altermagnetism. Using unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations, we find an altermagnetic state for this model that evolves from a metallic state to an insulating state with increasing Hubbard-U Coulomb repulsion. We then examine the inelastic neutron scattering response in these states using random-phase approximation calculations of the dynamic spin susceptibility χ"(q,ω). We find that the magnetic excitation spectrum depends on its chirality for q along certain directions in reciprocal space, an observation that may be used in inelastic neutron scattering experiments as a probe of altermagnetism.

Weak-coupling theory of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Strong correlations occur in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) when the octet of flat moiré minibands centered on charge neutrality (CN) is partially occupied. The octet consists of a single valence band and a single conduction band for each of four degenerate spin-valley flavors. Motivated by the importance of Hartree electrostatic interactions in determining the filling-factor-dependent band structure, we use a time-dependent Hartree approximation to gain insight into electronic correlations. We find that the electronic compressibility is dominated by Hartree interactions, that paramagnetic states are stable over a range of density near CN, and that the dependence of energy on flavor polarization is strongly overestimated by mean-field theory. Intensity of a weak 519-keV γ ray following β decay of the superallowed emitter 34 Ar determined via the 33 S(p,γ) 34 Cl reaction

The predominant branch in the β decay of 34 Ar is the superallowed 0 + → 0 + transition to the ground state of 34 Cl. To determine its important branching ratio one must first establish the ratios for the competing Gamow-Teller branches based on the measured intensities of γ rays subsequently emitted from the excited states they populate in 34 Cl. The strongest of these branches populates the 1 + state at 666 keV in 34 Cl, which has three possible γ-decay paths. Here, we report here a measurement of the decay of this state, which we populated via resonant proton capture in the reaction 33 S(p,γ) 34 Cl. We find that the intensity of the 519-keV γ-ray path is 1.46(19)% relative to that of the 666-keV path. This result is critical to new precise measurements of the superallowed decay of 34 Ar.
