Technologies and Operations for High Voltage Corona Detection with UAVs

Autonomous UAV transmission line inspection served as a reference mission for NASA demonstration of UAV deployment for economic benefit; this paper reports corona sensing advances in development of that reference mission. Unmanned aerial vehicles can serve as a platform for autonomous sensing and location of high voltage coronal discharge. Simple processing of commercial corona camera imagery can automate discharge localization and documentation. Inexpensive ultraviolet point sensors can sense discharge when carried close to the defect with a UAV. Augmented with a parabolic mirror, point sensor range can be increased to a safe inspection standoff distance, at the cost of a narrowed field of view. Results from a test flight of an augmented UV sensor are described. The imaging approach is superior in sensitivity and acquisition time, while the point sensor approach has superior size, weight, cost and durability advantages.

Demonstration of 4H-SiC JFET Digital ICs Across 1000 °C Temperature Range Without Change to Input Voltages

Operational testing of prototype 4H-SiC JFET ICs across an unrivaled ambient temperature span in excess of 1000 °C, from -190 °C to +812 °C, has been demonstrated without any change/adjustment of input signal levels or power supply voltages. This unique ability is expected to simplify infusion of this IC technology into a broader range of beneficial applications.

Voltage-Controlled Differential Faraday Rotation from FMNWs and Magnetoelastic Silicone-Nickel Composites

Differential Faraday rotation has been observed from strain-Differential Faraday rotation has been observed from strain-modulated magnetoelastic membranes using millimeter-wave polarimetry at 61.25 GHz. The membranes, consisting of aligned chains of nickel micro-particles embedded in silicone rubber, were manufactured using a roll-to-roll electromagnetic processing line, mounted onto piezoelectric ceramic annuli, and immersed in externally-generated static magnetic fields. Experiments were conducted in which the membranes were periodically stretched by operating the piezoelectric crystals close to their radial resonant frequencies—thereby modulating nickel particle density as well as magnetic material properties. A customized quasi-optical apparatus was used to determine the Faraday-rotation difference between the strained and unstrained states of the magnetoelastic membranes. Possible applications that could emerge from this polymer-based technology include nonreciprocal millimeter-wave components with voltage-controlled frequency response and bio-inspired geomagnetic sensors for GPS-denied navigation. Investigations were conducted to estimate the maximum attainable differential Faraday rotation and the minimum detectable static magnetic field.

Power Quality Analysis for a High Voltage Power System for Urban Air Mobility Application

Maturation of electric power technologies has opened the door for deployment of new types of aircraft within urban air mobility (UAM) markets. These new types of aircraft use non-conventional designs, which do not fall within existing regulatory requirements; this is especially true for the design and verification of the high voltage primary power systems which are being proposed for many of these aircraft. The purpose of this paper is to investigate and inform integration requirements, mainly related to power quality, based on a point design of a NASA Lift-plus-Cruise Vehicle Electrical Power System (EPS) and Utilization Equipment (UE). The results will be used to inform normal and abnormal operating performance of the EPS and UE for future standards in regards to Power Quality.

A High Voltage Tethered Power System for Planetary Surface Applications

In the pursuit of human and robotic expansion of theLunar surface and other planetary bodies, power conversionand transmission over long distances has emerged as a distinctneed. The ability to transmit power over kilometers at highefficiency enables human settlement, in-situ resource utilization, and extreme terrain robotic exploration, through the ability toreach previously unreachable places. The critical buildingblocks of such a system are being developed by the TetheredPower System for Lunar Mobility and Power Transmission(TYMPO) project, a NASA project aimed at reaching flightreadiness by 2024. This paper presents an architectural andrequirements overview of the TYMPO project, along withtechnology discussions on the GaN-based multilevel DCXconverters, dual fiber optics and power-line communicationssystem, and high-voltage tether. Finally, a set of proposed futuremissions will be presented, mapping the capabilities of theTYMPO system to missions that may soon explore planetarysurfaces throughout the solar system.

Preliminary Measurements of Partial Discharge Inception Voltage Degradation with Constant Temperature Aging of Magnet Wire Twisted Pairs for Electric Aircraft Motors

Electric aircraft require high reliability electric motors to meet the stringent safety standards of the aviation industry. Motor winding insulation lifetime and reliability models for electric aircraft applications are needed to enable design of high reliability and high-performance electric motors for aviation applications. Three primary stresses effect the lifetime of motor winding insulation: thermochemical, mechanical, and electrical. This paper presents preliminary experiments on twisted pairs of magnet wire targeting understanding the thermo-chemical degradation of motor winding insulation through constant temperature thermal aging. Three types of magnet wire twisted pairs where tested: polyimide insulated magnet wire, epoxy coated polyimide insulated magnet wire, and epoxy potted polyimide magnet wire. The degradation of the samples over time at temperature was tracked using partial discharge inception voltage measurements. These initial experiments were used for development of procedures and expertise in partial discharge testing and thermo-chemical aging to inform future testing. The preliminary nature of these experiments should be noted when viewing the results. Lessons learned from the experiments are documented.

Space Charge Analysis Capabilities for the Evaluation of High Voltage Insulation Materials

Materials development is crucial for the advancement of electric aviation. Current research focusing on novel multifunctional materials is underway to solve the needs for aerospace systems; however, additional testing of these materials to understand their failure modes is equally critical. This project will utilize pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) instrumentation to investigate space charge accumulation of multifunctional composites and other insulation materials critical to robust high power transmission systems. Evaluating the space charge phenomena in dielectric materials will provide unique and fundamentally necessary data to determine the feasibility and lifetime of any high voltage insulation system. When electrical charge is injected into a solid dielectric, charge can accumulate and become trapped, leading to the failure of the insulation via breakdown or arcing events. This study will discuss the pulsed electroacoustic methodology and its use on evaluating various dielectric polymer and composite films.
