System and method embodiments for modifying gas content in printable compositions for additive manufacturing

Disclosed herein are embodiments of a system for use in additive manufacturing methods. The system can comprise a first container, and a first fluid and a second fluid forming a fluid-fluid interface within the first container. The first fluid is between the fluid-fluid interface and the transparent portion of the first container and configured to remove oxygen from the second fluid at the fluid-fluid interface to facilitate polymerization of a monomeric component in the second fluid. The system can also comprise a circulation system configured to circulate the first fluid through the first container such that the first fluid flows between the fluid-fluid interface and the inner surface of the transparent portion of the first container.

Ultrathin layer photocatalysts

A transparent ceramic substrate is covered by a photocatalyst layer, at least partially. The photocatalyst layer includes a semiconductor material that, upon exposure to electromagnetic radiation, forms a plurality of electrons and a plurality of holes that remain confined to the photocatalyst layer. The transparent ceramic substrate has a diameter that is larger than the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation for light trapping.

Systems and methods for organic semiconductor devices with sputtered contact layers

Systems and methods for organic semiconductor devices with sputtered contact layers are provided. In one embodiment, an organic semiconductor device comprises: a first contact layer comprising a first sputter-deposited transparent conducting oxide; an electron transport layer interfacing with the first contact layer; a second contact layer comprising a second sputter-deposited transparent conducting oxide; a hole transport layer interfacing with the second contact layer; and an organic semiconductor active layer having a first side facing the electron transport layer and an opposing second side facing the hole transport layer; wherein either the electron transport layer or the hole transport layer comprises a buffering transport layer.

Mesoporous optically clear heat insulators for sustainable building envelopes

Mesoporous materials exhibit highly controlled nanoscale structures, often templated by liquid crystalline assemblies of surfactants, with emergent and often designable physical properties. However, scaling their fabrication to be suitable for uses like envelopes of buildings is challenging. Here we describe fabrication of flexible square-meter-sized films and multi-centimeter-thick slabs made of three-dimensional spatial graphs of mesopore tubes having all structural features under 50 nanometers. Solution-based kinetic fabrication process templates growing networks of cylindrical surfactant micelles with thin tubes of polysiloxane forming gel networks and, upon replacing surfactants and solvents with air, yields lightweight materials with >99% visible-range optical transparency and ~10 mW K-1m-1 thermal conductivity. Such predesigned metamaterials enable transparent thermal barriers for wall-grade insulated glass units, square-meter window retrofits and unconcentrated solar thermal energy harnessing.

Best practices: Organizational execution

This article, the fourth and final installment in the DOE–IDEA series, focuses on organizational execution and how strong management practices, teamwork, and preparedness contribute to successful district energy systems. It highlights case studies from Ashley Energy and Cornell University to illustrate effective operational strategies. Ashley Energy demonstrates the importance of emergency preparedness and rapid response. After a major flood disrupted its plant, the organization restored service in under 72 hours by relying on pre-established plans, vendor relationships, and trained staff. The case emphasizes proactive contingency planning, understanding insurance processes, and empowering skilled personnel to improvise during crises. Cornell University’s example highlights the role of collaboration and transparency in long-term success. Its district energy system benefits from strong data sharing, real-time energy monitoring, and active involvement of faculty and students in system planning and innovation. This culture of teamwork and data-driven decision-making supports sustainability goals and continuous system improvement. Overall, the article shows that effective organizational execution—through preparedness, collaboration, and data transparency—is essential for maintaining reliable, efficient, and sustainable district energy systems.

Collaborative R&D with REEL Solar Inc (REEL) to Understand and Overcome Performance Limitations in CdTe Solar Cells: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

This CRADA will focus on processing, advanced characterization, and testing of photovoltaic materials and devices to understand and improve REEL CdTe solar technology. This will include examining process variations and different buffer, absorber, and contact layers from REEL and NLR to maximize performance. The unique and diverse advanced characterization tools at NLR, such as time-resolved photoluminescence, capacitance-voltage measurements, electron beam scattered diffraction, cathodoluminescence, electron microscopy, TOF-SIMS, and other measurements will be applied to characterize REEL processing to improve understanding and guide experimental directions. Accelerated stability and potential induced degradation tests will be used to analyze metastability, short-and-long term degradation, and improve bankability. A second and major thrust this period will be joint development of Si/CdTe tandem solar cells to overcome industry wide terrestrial solar efficiency limits with the two lowest cost and manufacturable solar materials today. This will include developing novel transparent back contacts that can be incorporated into tandem structures and other novel solar applications, detailed analysis of designs and configurations for CdTe/Si tandem modules, and prototyping REEL CdTe Technology with Si bottom cells in tandem structures.

Electrical Switching of Nematic Plasmonic Nanocolloids for Infrared Solar Gain Control

Controlling solar gain is essential to reduce the energy consumption by residential and commercial buildings, which are responsible for ≈40% of all energy generated globally. However, the dynamic control of solar gain in the near-infrared that corresponds to ≈50% of the overall Sun's energy at the Earth's surface, separately from the visible spectral range has been a challenge, albeit commercial coatings provide passive control while retaining highly visible transmission. To address this problem, in this paper switchable silver colloids (SSCs) are demonstrated, colloidal analogs of the common silver coatings used for solar gain control. When dispersed in a nematic liquid crystal, orientations of such plasmonic silver nanoplates are controlled by ≈1 V low-voltage electric fields, allowing for sub-second switching of the near-infrared-based solar gain. Installed and retrofit products made from thin films of such nanoplate dispersions confined between glass and plastic substrates, respectively, exhibit electrically controlled infrared-based solar gain while retaining high visible-range transparency, low haze, and high color rendering index. Furthermore, this study's findings reveal a great potential of soft-matter systems in addressing energy-related problems.

Oxide Two‐Dimensional Electron Gas with High Mobility at Room‐Temperature

Abstract The prospect of 2‐dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) possessing high mobility at room temperature in wide‐bandgap perovskite stannates is enticing for oxide electronics, particularly to realize transparent and high‐electron mobility transistors. Nonetheless only a small number of studies to date report 2DEGs in BaSnO 3 ‐based heterostructures. Here, 2DEG formation at the LaScO 3 /BaSnO 3 (LSO/BSO) interface with a room‐temperature mobility of 60 cm 2 V −1 s −1 at a carrier concentration of 1.7 × 10 13 cm –2 is reported. This is an order of magnitude higher mobility at room temperature than achieved in SrTiO 3 ‐based 2DEGs. This is achieved by combining a thick BSO buffer layer with an ex situ high‐temperature treatment, which not only reduces the dislocation density but also produces a SnO 2 ‐terminated atomically flat surface, followed by the growth of an overlying BSO/LSO interface. Using weak beam dark‐field transmission electron microscopy imaging and in‐line electron holography technique, a reduction of the threading dislocation density is revealed, and direct evidence for the spatial confinement of a 2DEG at the BSO/LSO interface is provided. This work opens a new pathway to explore the exciting physics of stannate‐based 2DEGs at application‐relevant temperatures for oxide nanoelectronics.

Device Performance of Emerging Photovoltaic Materials (Version 1)

Abstract Emerging photovoltaics (PVs) focus on a variety of applications complementing large scale electricity generation. Organic, dye‐sensitized, and some perovskite solar cells are considered in building integration, greenhouses, wearable, and indoor applications, thereby motivating research on flexible, transparent, semitransparent, and multi‐junction PVs. Nevertheless, it can be very time consuming to find or develop an up‐to‐date overview of the state‐of‐the‐art performance for these systems and applications. Two important resources for recording research cells efficiencies are the National Renewable Energy Laboratory chart and the efficiency tables compiled biannually by Martin Green and colleagues. Both publications provide an effective coverage over the established technologies, bridging research and industry. An alternative approach is proposed here summarizing the best reports in the diverse research subjects for emerging PVs. Best performance parameters are provided as a function of the photovoltaic bandgap energy for each technology and application, and are put into perspective using, e.g., the Shockley–Queisser limit. In all cases, the reported data correspond to published and/or properly described certified results, with enough details provided for prospective data reproduction. Additionally, the stability test energy yield is included as an analysis parameter among state‐of‐the‐art emerging PVs.

BRE‐X Emissions Database for End‐of‐Life Scenarios of Selective Building Construction Materials to Enable Circular Economy in Construction

In the United States, construction and demolition debris predominately end up in landfills with minimal end‐of‐life Re‐X (recover, recycle, reuse, etc.) scenarios, resulting in large environmental impacts and lost opportunities for material recovery. Except for concrete and metals, which seem to have a few well‐defined end‐of‐life pathways, there seems to be a lack of well‐documented end‐of‐life scenarios for other construction materials, let alone their emissions data. Hence, there is a need for documented end‐of‐life Re‐X scenarios and end‐of‐life data of more building materials to motivate widespread use of Re‐X strategies in building design. This paper outlines the efforts of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Carbon Leadership Forum, Building Transparency, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to (a) create an open‐access BRE‐X (Building Re‐X) end‐of‐life emissions database consisting of greenhouse gas emissions data associated with various end‐of‐life scenarios for a select list of high‐impact building construction materials, and (b) integrate the BRE‐X end‐of‐life emissions database with CAD/BIM/LCA tools for evaluating various end‐of‐life scenarios. The paper also presents a few existing life cycle inventory databases that contain sparse amounts of end‐of‐life data for a few construction materials and their limitations in terms of scaling and data consolidation. Finally, a sample of how the collected data can be ingested into whole‐building LCA tools using open data formats and a public access link to the BRE‐X end‐of‐life emissions database is also included.

Identifying Suitable Front Contacts for High‐Efficiency Cd(Se,Te) Solar Cells on Space‐Qualified Cover Glass

Deployment of photovoltaics in space requires devices that combine high-efficiency, low areal mass, and resilience to harsh environments. Historically, high-efficiency multijunction III–V materials have dominated space power systems; however, their high cost and limited manufacturing throughput motivate the exploration of scalable alternatives. While CdTe-based thin-film photovoltaics offer an attractive option, their performance on non-conventional substrates can suffer from front contact instability under higher-temperature processing. Here, the role of front contact chemistry in limiting cell performance is investigated using CdTe-based devices fabricated on 150 μm thick Ceria-doped space-qualified 0214 Corning glass. A matrix of four transparent conducting oxides (TCOs: CTO, AZO, ITO, IZO) combined with two n-type emitters (MZO, IGO) reveals chemical stability at the front interface—rather than absorber composition alone—governs recombination losses, voltage deficits, and device reproducibility. Chemically stable front contact combinations suppress elemental diffusion and interfacial degradation, resulting in significantly improved carrier lifetimes and junction quality. These insights are validated through record-certified Cd(Se,Te) cell efficiencies of 18.4% under AM1.5G and 16.2% under AM0 illumination on ultra-thin glass. Beyond CdTe, this work provides a general framework for the rational selection of TCO/emitter interfaces in superstrate thin-film photovoltaics, including emerging technologies like metal halide perovskites, while enabling high-efficiency, lightweight photovoltaics for space applications.

Four–Terminal Perovskite–CdSeTe Tandem Solar Cells: From 25% toward 30% Power Conversion Efficiency and Beyond

Thin-film tandem photovoltaic (PV) technology has emerged as a promising avenue to enhance power conversion efficiency beyond the radiative efficiency limit of single-junction devices. Combining a tunable wide-bandgap perovskite cell with a commercially established narrow-bandgap cadmium selenium telluride (CdSeTe) cell in a comparatively easy-to-fabricate four-terminal (4-T) arrangement is a great step in that direction. Herein, the impact of the transparent back contact and the perovskite absorber bandgap on the performance of 4-T perovskite–CdSeTe tandem solar cells is investigated. 4-T perovskite–CdSeTe tandem device architecture with ≈25% efficiency is demonstrated and a feasible pathway is shown to improve the tandem efficiency to more than 30%. Furthermore, the results show that the integration of CdSeTe with perovskite in 4-T tandem PV configurations represents a significant advancement toward achieving higher efficiency and low-cost tandem PVs.

Benchmark microgravity experiments and computations for 3D dendritic-array stability in directional solidification

In this study, we present a comprehensive quantitative analysis of stability bands for dendritic arrays during directional solidification of a transparent succinonitrile-0.46 wt % camphor alloy, spanning a broad range of pulling velocities. Taking advantage of the microgravity environment aboard the International Space Station where most convection effects are suppressed, we obtain unique measurements that quantify the stable primary spacing range of spatially extended three-dimensional dendritic array structures under purely diffusive growth conditions. Through carefully designed velocity jump experiments and detailed examination of sub-grain boundary dynamics, we characterize key instabilities, including elimination and tertiary branching, shedding new light on the mechanisms governing dynamic dendritic spacing selection in extended 3D arrays. Phase field simulations are performed to characterize the stability limits of dendritic array structures for quantitative comparison with the flight experiments. Although the simulations capture general trends, significant deviations are noted at the upper stability boundary, indicating the influence of additional, unexplored factors. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of dendritic growth dynamics and offer valuable benchmark data that could aid in refining predictive models and improving control of dendritic microstructures in metallurgical applications.

Tin sensitization and silver activation on indium tin oxide surfaces

Adhesion of electrical contacts on electronic and optoelectronic devices is important for reliable device operation. Sn-sensitization is a widely used process that improves uniformity and adhesion of plated metals to glass and polymer surfaces. Electrically conductive substrates can significantly benefit from improved uniformity, adhesion, and contact resistance to metallic contact layers. In this study, we investigate the process of Sn-sensitization and Ag-activation on indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces—a dominant transparent conducting oxide used in optoelectronic devices. Here, our results show that ITO films exposed to Sn-sensitization solutions with HCl concentrations below 10 mM effectively modify the surface termination through the process of Sn-sensitization (Sn-bonding at the surface hydroxide sites) without etching the ITO film. However, the subsequent Ag-activation on an ITO surface does not seem to follow the typical response on a glass substrate, suggesting that Ag-activation of an ITO surface is likely limited by the Ag ion size relative to the area density of surface hydroxide sensitization sites.

Recent progress in in-situ visualization of electrochemical reactions in electrochemical energy devices

A growing body of evidence indicates that bubble dynamics are crucial performance-limiting factors on electrochemical reactions and energy conversion efficiencies in both half-cell and full cell device levels. This review aims to summarize the recent progress in in-situ visualization characterizations of electrochemical reactions and reactant/product transport in electrochemical energy systems. The latest achievements of various new electrodes, transparent cell designs, and development for simultaneous visualization of reactions at both electrodes and electrolyte/electrode interface are highlighted. The new insights into the influence of bubbles on reaction sites and associated electrochemical performances are discussed. Lastly, some perspectives on potential strategies for mitigating the bubble-induced energy losses are proposed for future research directions and opportunities in water electrolysis and other electrochemical energy systems.

Comparative study on the overall energy performance between photovoltaic and Low-E insulated glass units

In this report a novel semi-transparent building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) laminate was developed and introduced in this paper. It was produced by cutting standard mono-crystalline silicon solar cells into small strips and then making electrical connections between each strip before laminating the cells between two layers of glass. The overall energy performance and energy saving potential of the BIPV insulated glass unit (IGU) under real world conditions were identified through a side by side comparative study. Compared to the reference IGU, the BIPV IGU had lower solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) but much higher U-factor. The average HVAC electricity saving of the BIPV IGU was about 10% relative to the reference IGU. Daylighting measurement and analysis were carried out to evaluate the trade-offs associated with the BIPV IGU between daylight, glare, and lighting energy use. The results indicated that the BIPV IGU is better than the reference IGU in reducing discomfort glare. However, if the most conservative viewpoint near the window is used for the assessment, a lower transmittance BIPV IGU is required to bring the overall discomfort levels below the perceptible level. Lastly, the net energy saving potential associated with the novel BIPV IGU was identified based on the power, thermal and daylighting performance. On average, the BIPV IGU saved 16.8% of the total electricity use of the room. Further studies and improvement on the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells, the optimal transmittance as well as the thermal properties would make this technology more energy-efficient and affordable.

Sputtered indium tin oxide as a recombination layer formed on the tunnel oxide/poly-Si passivating contact enabling the potential of efficient monolithic perovskite/Si tandem solar cells

We focus on utilizing sputtered indium tin oxide (ITO) as a recombination layer, having low junction damage to an n-type silicon solar cell with a front-side tunnel oxide passivating electron contact, thereby enabling the development of a high efficiency monolithic perovskite/Si tandem device. High transparency and low resistivity ITO films are deposited via low power DC magnetron sputtering at room temperature onto a front-side thin SiO x /n + poly-Si contact in a complete Cz n-Si cell with a back-side Al 2 O 3 /SiN x passivating boron-diffused p + -emitter on a random pyramid textured surface. We report the cell characteristics before and after ITO sputtering, and we find a cure at 250 °C in air is highly effective at mitigating any sputtering induced damage. Our ITO coated sample resulted in an implied open-circuit voltage (iV oc ) of 684.7 ± 11.3 mV with the total saturation current density of 49.2 ± 14.8 fA/cm 2 , an implied fill factor (iFF) of 81.9 ± 0.8%, and a contact resistivity in the range of 60 mΩ-cm 2 to 90 mΩ-cm 2 . After formation of a local Ag contact to the rear emitter and sputtered ITO film as the front-side contact without grid fingers, the pseudo-efficiency of 20.2 ± 0.5% was obtained with the V oc of 670.4 ± 7 mV and pseudo FF of 77.3 ± 1.3% under simulated one sun with the calculated short-circuit current density of 30.9 mA/cm 2 from the measured external quantum efficiency. Furthermore, our modelling result shows that efficiency exceeding 25% under one sun is practically achievable in perovskite/Si tandem configuration using the ITO recombination layer connecting a perovskite top cell and a poly-Si bottom cell.

Heteroatom substitution for the development of near-IR lumiphores

Near-IR (NIR) lumiphores are advantageous for biological applications as their emission falls within the tissue-transparent region. Furthermore, these dyes suffer from low quantum yields as a consequence of their low transition energy. Heteroatom substitution has recently been successfully used to bathochromically shift emission in various dye scaffolds while maintaining bright emission.
