Damaged elastomeric diaphragms within pneumatic controllers used in the oil and gas industry lead to an unintended release of methane. Self-healing microvascular materials capable of healing various types of damage have been fabricated. These microvascular materials are designed to replace currently available commercial diaphragms found in pneumatic controllers and provide a solution to reduce unintended methane leaks. This project demonstrated the ability of these materials to reduce methane release by more than 80% in lab and pilot settings. Additionally, ML approaches successfully identified leaking systems based on training using synthetic and real data.

As a part of the DOE NE High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is performing destructive examinations (DEs) of high burnup (HBU) (>45 GWD/MTU) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) rods from the North Anna Nuclear Power Station operated by Dominion Energy. The SNF rods, called the sister rods or sibling rods, are all HBU and include four different kinds of fuel rod cladding: standard Zircaloy-4 (Zirc-4), low-tin (LT) Zirc-4, ZIRLO, and M5. The DEs are being conducted to obtain a baseline of the HBU rod’s condition before dry storage and are focused on understanding overall SNF rod strength and durability. Both fuel rods and empty cladding will be tested to derive material properties. Although the data generated can be used for multiple purposes, one primary goal for obtaining the postirradiation examination data and the associated measured mechanical properties is to support SNF dry storage licensing and relicensing activities by (1) addressing identified knowledge gaps and (2) enhancing the technical basis for post-storage transportation, handling, and consolidation activities. This appendix documents the status of the ORNL Phase 1 DE activities related to rod internal pressure and void volume measurement techniques, fission gas stack flow measurements applied to selected sister rods, and fission gas release calculations in Phase 1 of the sister rod test program.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility deploys specialized Aerosol Observing Systems (AOSs; Figure 1) for ground-based, in situ measurements of properties of atmospheric aerosols in climatically important regions of the world.

Motivation: Determine the length and opening of two lab-grown cracks, designated as LT-14 and LT-28, representative of stress corrosion cracks in spent nuclear fuel dry storage casks to supplement future testing of gas and aerosol transport. Problem: The extreme aspect ratio of the crack length to opening requires that imaging occurs in stages with the results merged before final analysis. Method: High magnification (1500x) optical images of both sides of the two plates were acquired. 20x stitched images with LSCM were acquired, fully stitched along the length, and leveled with newly developed PLATES Method in MATLAB®. Conclusion for LT-14: Side 1 is 47.25 mm long and has 366 separate crack features with an average length of 23.50 µm and an average opening of 8.27 µm. Side 2 is 69.44 mm long and has 550 separate crack features with an average length of 81.63 µm and an average opening of 67.70 µm. Conclusion for LT-28: Side 1 is 71.95 mm long and has 1,127 separate crack features with an average length of 42.27 µm and an average opening of 10.31 µm. Side 2 is 74.88 mm long and has 520 separate crack features with an average length of 98.13 µm and an average opening of 14.99 µm. The adjacent crack on side 1 is 18.95 mm long and has 37 separate crack features with an average length of 17.46 µm and an average opening of 10.42 µm. The adjacent crack on side 2 is 26.40 mm long and has 55 separate crack features with an average length of 87.26 µm and an average opening of 48.29 µm. Each adjacent crack is approximately 26 mm from the main crack.
The work focused on finalizing the window design for the DarkNESS Critical Design Review (CDR) and analyzing X-ray data to determine detector noise and gain.
