The UTRC wind energy conversion system performance analysis for horizontal axis wind turbines (WECSPER)

The theory for the UTRC Energy Conversion System Performance Analysis (WECSPER) for the prediction of horizontal axis wind turbine performance is presented. Major features of the analysis are the ability to: (1) treat the wind turbine blades as lifting lines with a prescribed wake model; (2) solve for the wake-induced inflow and blade circulation using real nonlinear airfoil data; and (3) iterate internally to obtain a compatible wake transport velocity and blade loading solution. This analysis also provides an approximate treatment of wake distortions due to tower shadow or wind shear profiles. Finally, selected results of internal UTRC application of the analysis to existing wind turbines and correlation with limited test data are described.

Improved operation of magnetic bearings for flywheel energy storage system

Analysis and operation of prototype 500-Wh flywheel at low speeds have shown that many factors affect the correct functioning of the magnetic bearings. An examination is made of a number of these, including magnetic bearing control system nonlinearities and displacement transducer positioning, and their effects upon the successful operation of the suspension system. It is observed that the bearing control system is extremely sensitive to actuator parameters such as coil inductance. As a consequence of the analysis of bearing relaxation oscillations, the bearing actuator design methodology which has previously been used, where coil parameter selection is based upon static considerations, has been revised. Displacement transducer sensors which overcome the collocation problem are discussed.

Improved orbital and physical parameters for the Pluto-Charon system

Analysis of the observations of several Pluto-Charon occultation and transit events in 1985 and 1986 has provided a more detailed knowledge of the system. The sum of the radii of Pluto and Charon is 1786 + or - 19 kilometers, but the individual radii are somewhat more poorly determined; Pluto is 1145 + or - 46 kilometers in radius, and Charon is 642 + or - 34 kilometers in radius. The mean density of the system is 1.84 + or - 0.19 grams/cu cm, implying that more than half of the mass is due to rock. Charon appears to have hemispheres of two different colors, the Pluto-facing side being neutral in color and the opposite hemisphere being a reddish color similar to Pluto.

Total systems design analysis of high performance structures

Designer-control parameters were identified at interdiscipline interfaces to optimize structural systems performance and downstream development and operations with reliability and least life-cycle cost. Interface tasks and iterations are tracked through a matrix of performance disciplines integration versus manufacturing, verification, and operations interactions for a total system design analysis. Performance integration tasks include shapes, sizes, environments, and materials. Integrity integrating tasks are reliability and recurring structural costs. Significant interface designer control parameters were noted as shapes, dimensions, probability range factors, and cost. Structural failure concept is presented, and first-order reliability and deterministic methods, benefits, and limitations are discussed. A deterministic reliability technique combining benefits of both is proposed for static structures which is also timely and economically verifiable. Though launch vehicle environments were primarily considered, the system design process is applicable to any surface system using its own unique filed environments.

A framework for SFC/DC system data analysis

The Shop Floor Control/Data Collection (SFC/DC) system is one of four major modules of the Integrated Work Control System being implemented at the NASA Kennedy Space Center. The SFC/DC system, which has been in operation approximately one and a half years, collects detailed information regarding the duration of tasks as well as work stoppages duration. This information needs to be effectively analyzed, so as be able to manage the shuttle processing activities under the continuous improvement philosophy. We have studied the contents and form of the SFC/DC database, and based on the results of such study, we have designed a Shop floor Modeling, Analysis, and Reporting Tool (SMART). SMART is a collection of compatible tools (off-the-shelf as well as customized C-based tools) that work cohesively to prepare inputs for the analysis models and process the various models. The feasibility of SMART has been demonstrated through an initial prototype.

Characterization of Thermal Protection Systems: An Analysis of Optical & Thermal Properties

Thermal Protection System Materials & thermal control coatings were characterized by a variety of methodologies including heat flow meter method (HFM), dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Ultra-Violet & Visible light spectroscopy (UV-VIS). Physical properties were measured to aid in the construction of thermal response models for a number a projects including MEDLI and MEDLI2. Comparing pre-flight predictions with actual flight data can allow for a reduction of margins and improve designs. The models enable design of TPS for flight missions and analysis of flight data to understand aerothermal environments experienced on the mission. This presentation reveals critical information: heat capacity (cp vs T), thermal conductivity ( vs T), and emissivity (E vs T) for Super Lightweight Ablative (SLA), Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablative (PICA-D), & Heatshield for Extreme Entry Environment Technology (HEEET). These properties were also measured for various thermal control coatings manufactured by AZ Technology. A portion of this work is incomplete and highlights questions to investigate in the future.

Precipitation Recycling in the NASA GEOS Data Assimilation System

Analysis of precipitation recycling can improve the understanding of regional hydrologic anomalies, especially their evolution and maintenance. Diagnostic models of the recycling of precipitation and are applied to 15 years of the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) Data Assimilation System (DAS). Recycled precipitation is defined as the fraction of precipitation within a given region that originated as surface evaporation from the same region. The focus of the present work is on the interannual variability of the central United States hydrologic cycle and precipitation recycling. The extreme years of 1988 (drought) and 1993 (flood) are compared with the 15 year base period mean annual cycle. The results indicate that recycling ratio (the amount of precipitation with a local source relative to the total precipitation) is greater in 1988 than both the base period mean and the 1993 season (with 1993 recycling ratio less than the mean). On the other hand, both the summers of 1988 and 1993 show less total recycled precipitation than the mean. The results also show that precipitation recycling may have been more important in the spring of 1993, when the region was primed for flooding, than the summer, when the sever flooding occurred. The diagnostic approaches to precipitation recycling suffer from some weaknesses. Numerical simulations and assimilation using passive tracers have the potential to provide more accurate calculations of precipitation recycling and the remote sources of water. This ability is being incorporated into the latest GEOS data assimilation system, and some preliminary results will be presented.

Energy efficient engine flight propulsion system preliminary analysis and design report

A flight propulsion system preliminary design was established that meets the program goals of at least a 12 percent reduction in thrust specific fuel consumption, at least a five percent reduction in direct operating cost, and one-half the performance deterioration rate of the most efficient current commercial engines. The engine provides a high probability of meeting the 1978 noise rule goal. Smoke and gaseous emissions defined by the EPA proposed standards for engines newly certified after 1 January 1981 are met with the exception of NOx, despite incorporation of all known NOx reduction technology.

A rule-based system for real-time analysis of control systems

An approach to automate the real-time analysis of flight critical health monitoring and system status is being developed and evaluated at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility. A software package was developed in-house and installed as part of the extended aircraft interrogation and display system. This design features a knowledge-base structure in the form of rules to formulate interpretation and decision logic of real-time data. This technique has been applied for ground verification and validation testing and flight testing monitoring where quick, real-time, safety-of-flight decisions can be very critical. In many cases post processing and manual analysis of flight system data are not required. The processing is described of real-time data for analysis along with the output format which features a message stack display. The development, construction, and testing of the rule-driven knowledge base, along with an application using the X-31A flight test program, are presented.

Comparing direct and iterative equation solvers in a large structural analysis software system

Two direct Choleski equation solvers and two iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) equation solvers used in a large structural analysis software system are described. The two direct solvers are implementations of the Choleski method for variable-band matrix storage and sparse matrix storage. The two iterative PCG solvers include the Jacobi conjugate gradient method and an incomplete Choleski conjugate gradient method. The performance of the direct and iterative solvers is compared by solving several representative structural analysis problems. Some key factors affecting the performance of the iterative solvers relative to the direct solvers are identified.

Aerodynamic preliminary analysis

Computerization of aerodynamic theory has progressed to state where analysis of complete aircraft configurations can be performed in single program. Aerodynamic Preliminary Analysis System, APAS, is comprehensive aerodynamic analysis system, based on linearized potential theory. Three-dimensional configurations (with or without jet flaps) having multiple nonplanar surfaces of arbitrary planform and open or closed slender bodies of noncircular contour may be analyzed with APAS. As preliminary design aid, APAS allows designer to survey systematically large number of alternative configurations and component geometries economically.
