Shape Approximation in Camera Fields of View for Parachute Visibility Applications

The ability to simulate camera line of sight and field of view is a powerful capability for flight mechanics simulations. This paper improves upon an existing camera visibility implementation that leverages geometry to estimate parachute visibility from a singular point by introducing a shape discretization method. The new method approximates a shape as a set of analytical points relative to a target marker within any number of camera fields of view. The method is developed in such a way to be generalized to a myriad of spacecraft applications. This effort focuses on an implementation to simulate parachute canopy visibility within the combined field of view of three cameras but additional applications are discussed. Monte Carlo analysis is used to assess the parachute canopy visibility example and demonstrate its improved performance over the previous method.

Battery Pack Shape Optimization using Transient Heat Conduction Coupled with Cell-Discharge Analysis

Battery electric systems exhibit significant time-dependence, especially when evaluated in the context of an aircraft mission profile with continually changing power demands. Additionally, when evaluating battery-powered aircraft concepts, it is important to accurately compute the temperature of the batteries and properly characterize the thermal response of the system. The temperature of the batteries has a significant impact on cell performance, in addition to safety considerations of maintaining battery temperatures below their operating limit. Because of these considerations, battery models for preliminary design and optimization of aircraft should include the capability to accurately compute the temperature distribution within the battery pack. Furthermore, battery pack designs should be as light-weight as possible to maximize the pack energy density, while also considering battery temperature limits. Here, we demonstrate a simultaneous trajectory and shape optimization of a battery pack concept, using a transient heat transfer finite element model coupled with a time-varying cell-discharge battery model to provide this capability. The transient finite-element analysis is done using TACS, and the cell-discharge battery model uses OpenMDAO and dymos. Including the transient finite element problem in the loop enables accurate temperatures that can be passed back to the cell discharge model, while the cell discharge model can supply the finite element model with time-varying heat boundary conditions, further benefiting the fidelity of the thermal response of the batteries. We first demonstrate the coupling capability between the battery cell-discharge model and the transient finite-element heat transfer through an optimization which computes the optimal current profile for the battery pack while ensuring the battery temperatures remain below their operational limit. We then build on this optimization by adding shape optimization to the problem, which allows us to consider a composite objective function which also minimizes the mass of the battery pack, while also producing an optimal current discharge profile.

Shape Servoing of Deformable Objects Using Model Estimation and Barrier Lyapunov Function

An adaptive shape servoing control method is presented in this article to manipulate a deformable object into a desired shape in 3-D. A finite-point-based representation of the deformable object is used and the deformation Jacobian matrix is approximated using Fourier series basis functions. The unknown parameters of the deformation Jacobian are learned by using the velocity applied to a control point on the object and corresponding change of positions of the points describing the entire object. An integral concurrent learning (ICL)-based parameter update law is designed along with a constrained controller to satisfy the state constraints on the motion of the control point using Barrier Lyapunov function analysis. ICL-based parameter update law uses data history of velocity and corresponding positions of the points along with their current values. An efficient algorithm to update the history stack using singular value maximization is proposed based on the structure of the regressor matrix. Simulations using a physical simulator and experiments using a robot platform are performed to validate the performance of the proposed controller on two different deformable objects.

The column strength of aluminum alloy 75S-T extruded shapes

Because the tensile strength and tensile yield strength of alloy 75S-T are appreciably higher than those of the materials used in the tests leading to the use of the straight-line column curve, it appeared advisable to establish the curve of column strength by test rather than by extrapolation of relations determined empirically in the earlier tests. The object of this investigation was to determine the curve of column strength for extruded aluminum alloy 75S-T. In addition to three extruded shapes, a rolled-and-drawn round rod was included. Specimens of various lengths covering the range of effective slenderness ratios up to about 100 were tested.

Piezoelectric Polymers Actuators for Precise Shape Control of Large Scale Space Antennas

Extremely large, lightweight, in-space deployable active and passive microwave antennas are demanded by future space missions. This paper investigates the development of PVDF based piezopolymer actuators for controlling the surface accuracy of a membrane reflector. Uniaxially stretched PVDF films were poled using an electrodeless method which yielded high quality poled piezofilms required for this application. To further improve the piezoperformance of piezopolymers, several PVDF based copolymers were examined. It was found that one of them exhibits nearly three times improvement in the in-plane piezoresponse compared with PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) piezopolymers. Preliminary experimental results indicate that these flexible actuators are very promising in controlling precisely the shape of the space reflectors.

Fabrication and Characteristics of Free Standing Shaped Pupil Masks for TPF-Coronagraph

Direct imaging and characterization of exo-solar terrestrial planets require coronagraphic instruments capable of suppressing star light to 10-10. Pupil shaping masks have been proposed and designed1 at Princeton University to accomplish such a goal. Based on Princeton designs, free standing (without a substrate) silicon masks have been fabricated with lithographic and deep etching techniques. In this paper, we discuss the fabrication of such masks and present their physical and optical characteristics in relevance to their performance over the visible to near IR bandwidth.
