Magnetic Bearing Pumps for Molten Salt Fusion Energy Devices

The Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) ARC reactor will employ a novel liquid immersion blanket design that uses a molten lithium salt as both the tritium-breeding material and the vacuum vessel coolant. fluoride lithium beryllium (FLiBe) (a lithium fluoride–beryllium difluoride mixture) is currently the leading salt candidate. Its low-Z components provide good moderation, it has adequate heat transfer properties and low electrical conductivity, and it has good neutron multiplication properties, which further enhance tritium production.

Regional Training Program: Promoting Undergraduate Minority Persistence in Nuclear Physics (RTP: PUMP-NP)

A total of two cohorts of research experience were conducted under this grant. The first year of the program in which a cohort of six students were recruited from three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). These students travelled to Durham, NC in summer to participate in this program. Prior to their arrival, the students participated in an orientation in which they selected from a choice of topics for summer research and were paired up with mentors from Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The participants of the program were integrated with the larger cohort of summer students who had arrived at TUNL as part of other programs, such as the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).

Characterization of Inlet Guide Vane Performance for Discharge Compressor Operation near the Dome of an sCO 2 Pumped Heat Energy Storage

Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) developed and tested a Variable Inlet Guide Vane (IGV herein) assembly on an integrally-geared sCO 2 compressor (IGC) to demonstrate compressor operation at both the compressor design point and near the dome and to define the operating limits of the compressor by monitoring for two-phase flow, flow turbulence from the IGVs, and compressor choke and surge as the CO 2 inlet temperature is varied. Performance testing was conducted on an existing integrally-geared, two-stage main compressor designed for near-critical-point operation with CO 2 . This testing campaign validated the IGV design and operation, as well as improved the understanding and confidence in operating compressors and predicting performance characteristics near the critical point where fluid properties change rapidly with temperature. In addition to improving the robust operating limits of an sCO 2 compressor, the development of an IGV for the IGC system improved off-design compressor efficiency by 12%.

Eliminating the Need for Refrigerants Using New Liquid and Salt-Based Cooling and Heat-Pumping Technology (CRADA Final Report)

Calion Technologies, Inc. project team investigated various embodiments of the ionocaloric cycle. Ionocaloric technology provides a new platform for all heating and cooling that is zero-GWP, non-toxic, non-hazardous, and non-flammable. It is well-poised to replace vapor compression technology which uses high-GWP refrigerants which are on track to account for 25% of our global warming budget. Developing the ionocaloric technology as a drop-in replacement for vapor compression was the primary research thrust under this CRADA.
