Optimization of fluid line sizes with pumping power penalty IBM-360 computer program

Computer program has been developed to calculate and total weights for tubing, fluid in tubing, and weight of fuel cell power source necessary to power pump based on flow rate and pressure drop. Program can be used for fluid systems used in any type of aircraft, spacecraft, trucks, ships, refineries, and chemical processing plants.

Thermal-powered reciprocating pump

Waste heat from radioisotope thermal generators in spacecraft is transported to keep instruments warm by two-cylinder reciprocating pump powered by energy from warm heat exchange fluid. Each cylinder has thermally nonconductive piston, heat exchange coil, and heat sink surface.

Shock and vibration tests of a SNAP-8 NaK pump

The pump used for reactor cooling in the SNAP 8 space power system was subjected to the expected vehicle launch vibration, and shock loading in accordance with the SNAP 8 environmental specification. Subsequent disassembly revealed damage to the thrust bearing pins, which should be redesigned and strengthened. The unit was operational, however, when run in a test loop after reassembly.

Aerodynamic static stability characteristics of the MSFC 33-foot pump fed booster at high angles of attack

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in the 14-inch trisonic wind tunnel during early February 1972 on a 0.00340 scale model of the 33-foot diameter space shuttle pump fed booster configuration. The basic configuration tested was a 40-deg cone/cylinder. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded over a Mach number range from 0.6 to 5.0, angles-of-attack from 50 to 90 deg at 0 deg sideslip and over a sideslip range from -10 to +10 deg at 60 and 80 deg angles-of-attack. Primary configuration variables were fin area and body cutout size.
