Evaluation of the Prompt Fission Gamma Properties for Neutron Induced Fission of 235,238 U and 239 Pu

Herein we present details of the prompt fission gamma property evaluations included in the released ENDF/B-VIII.0 files. The average prompt gamma multiplicity, the average prompt gamma spectrum, the average total prompt gamma energy released and the prompt gamma multiplicity distributions, included in the ENDF/B-VIII.0 files, are presented for 235 U(n,f), 238 U(n,f), and 239 Pu(n,f) reactions, as a function of incident neutron energy up to 30 MeV. The evaluation is based on available experimental data and model calculations. Notable data include recent measurements by experimental groups at Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, at Geel and Budapest, at CEA labs, as well as seminal historical gamma production measurements by Drake at Los Alamos.

Systems Analysis Approach to Polyethylene Terephthalate and Olefin Plastics Supply Chains in the Circular Economy: A Review of Data Sets and Models

The environmental and economic impacts of implementing a circular economy in plastic waste supply chains are not well understood. The proposed systems analysis framework assesses environmental, social, and economic impacts of plastic waste supply chains in a circular economy. The first objective of this article is to identify datasets, models and knowledge gaps associated with waste plastic supply chain processes, mainly in the U.S. Our literature review indicated that the best datasets exist for virgin plastic resin production, mechanical recycling, landfilling, and incineration, with materials recovery facility being intermediate, and with chemical recycling the lowest. The second objective of this article is to develop an illustrative application of the framework by conducting a preliminary systems analysis of PET bottles with closed-loop recycling. Here, the preliminary systems analysis of PET bottles utilized a linear programming optimization method. Our optimization model indicated that both chemical and mechanical recycling processes are needed to achieve a true circular economy of PET bottles with the least greenhouse gas emissions, specifically reductions of 24% when compared with the linear economy. Good quality and standardized life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis studies are needed to better understand the environmental, economic, and social impacts of advanced sorting and chemical recycling technologies.

Improving future travel demand projections: a pathway with an open science interdisciplinary approach

Transport accounts for 24% of global CO 2 emissions from fossil fuels. Governments face challenges in developing feasible and equitable mitigation strategies to reduce energy consumption and manage the transition to low-carbon transport systems. To meet the local and global transport emission reduction targets, policymakers need more realistic/sophisticated future projections of transport demand to better understand the speed and depth of the actions required to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In this paper, we argue that the lack of access to high-quality data on the current and historical travel demand and interdisciplinary research hinders transport planning and sustainable transitions toward low-carbon transport futures. We call for a greater interdisciplinary collaboration agenda across open data, data science, behaviour modelling, and policy analysis. These advancemets can reduce some of the major uncertainties and contribute to evidence-based solutions toward improving the sustainability performance of future transport systems. The paper also points to some needed efforts and directions to provide robust insights to policymakers. We provide examples of how these efforts could benefit from the International Transport Energy Modeling Open Data project and open science interdisciplinary collaborations.

Grid Parameters and Voltage Estimation Approach Integrating Data-Driven Converter Model

With Measurements of grid voltage and current are essential for the optimal operation of the grid protection and control (P&C) systems. Grid parameters vary through time during the faults and especially in the converter interfaced resources (CIRs) rich power grid, and thus accurate estimation is critical to avoid the mis-operation of the P&C systems. In this paper, a moving horizon estimation (MHE) as an observer is devised and applied to estimate the grid line parameters and grid voltages for protection enhancement. Due to the proprietary and confidentiality of CIRs, the proposed approach uses the black-box model to represent their dynamics. Leveraging the easily accessible measurements of output current from the black-box model of CIR and voltage at the point of common coupling, the proposed method estimates the grid impedance and grid voltage during normal and faulty operating conditions. The performance shows that the optimization-based observer was able to closely observe the accurate states and parameters, which can be utilized by the P&C systems.

On-Line Prediction of Resistant Force During Soil–Tool Interaction

For off-road vehicles such as excavators and wheel loaders, a large portion of energy is consumed to overcome the soil resistant force in the digging process. For optimal control of the digging tool, a high-fidelity model of the soil–tool interaction force is important to reduce energy consumption. Here, in this paper, an on-line soil resistant force prediction method is proposed. In this method, a hybrid model, which combines a physical model and a data-driven model, is used for the force prediction. In addition, the parameters of the hybrid model can be updated on-line based on real-time data. Comparisons with experimental data demonstrate that the proposed prediction method has an average error of around 12.7%.

Data Science Infrastructure SOFTWARE

LANL science workflows generate complex data sets and ensembles of data requiring significant compute and storage resources. The Data Science Infrastructure (DSI) project focuses on data-driven approaches to make data more readily available to LANL projects. DSI workflows leverage metadata stored in data-agnostic databases, supported by an abstraction layer API to simplify searching and accessing data across simulation runs, experimental runs, filesystems and environments. The abstraction layer API allows the user to query a range of data types: raw output, processed data, configuration data, machine learning models, performance data, etc. In addition to the abstraction backend API, the DSI project is developing client-driven query APIs and UIs to support specific user workflows.

Uncertainty Quantification in High Explosives Equations of State [Slides]

In order to fit models to data, we need a way to simulate the data given a model. Our projects involved simulators for the Manganin gauge experiment and for cylinder tests, which we use to calibrate models to experiments. We call the parameters we seek to optimize the degrees of freedom (DOF). We use a Bayesian approach with its associated UQ benefits.
