Computationally efficient algorithm for the dynamics of multi-link mechanisms

A computationally efficient algorithm for the dynamics of multi-rigid-link mechanisms is presented which is applicable to on-board processing for robotic manipulator control systems. A formulation of the equations of motion for such systems is presented which results in a solution algorithm of the order the number of system degrees of freedom. The formulation is presented for tree topology systems, where the chain topology of typical manipulators is a subset. Comparison of this algorithm is made with existing multibody simulation programs to illustrate the increased computational efficiency.

NASA 60 GHz intersatellite communication link definition study. Baseline document

The overall system and component concepts for a 60 GHz intersatellite communications link system (ICLS) are described. The ICLS was designed to augment the capabilities of the current Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), providing a data rate capacity large enough to accommodate the expected rates for user satellites (USAT's) in the post-1995 timeframe. The use of 60 GHz for the anticipated successor to TDRSS, the Tracking and Data Acquisition System (TDAS), was selected because of current technology development that will enable multigigibit data rates. Additionally, the attenuation of the earth's atmosphere at 60 GHz means that there is virtually no possibility of terrestrially generated interference (intentional or accidental) or terrestrially based intercept. The ICLS includes the following functional areas: (1) the ICLS payload package on the GEO TDAS satellite that communicates simultaneously with up to five LEO USAT's; (2) the payload package on the USAT that communicates with the TDAS satellite; and (3) the crosslink payload package on the TDAS satellite that communicates with another TDAS satellite. Two methods of data relay on-board the TDAS spacecraft were addressed. One is a complete baseband system (demod and remod) with a bi-directional 2 Gbps data stream; the other is a channelized system wherein some of the channels are baseband and others are merely frequency translated before re-transmission. Descriptions of the TDAS antenna, transmitter, receiver, and mechanical designs are presented.

NASA 60 GHz intersatellite links definition study. Final Review

Viewgraphs are presented which outline the overall system and component concepts for a 60 GHz intersatellite communications link system (ICLS). The ICLS was designed to augment the capabilities of the current Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), providing a data rate capacity large enough to accommodate the expected rates for user satellites (USAT's) in the post-1995 timeframe. Two methods of data relay on-board the planned TDAS (Tracking and Data Acquisition) satellites are described. One is an all-baseband system with a bi-directional 2 Gbps data stream; the other is a channelized crosslink system wherein some of the channels are baseband and others are merely frequency translated before re-transmission. The general system and technology design drivers are outlined along with the acquisition architecture design. Descriptions of the TDAS antenna, transmitter, receiver, and mechanical hardware are presented.

Dynamical modeling of serial manipulators with flexible links and joints using the method of kinematic influence

A method of formulating the dynamical equations of a flexible, serial manipulator is presented, using the Method of Kinematic Influence. The resulting equations account for rigid body motion, structural motion due to link and joint flexibilities, and the coupling between these two motions. Nonlinear inertial loads are included in the equations. A finite order mode summation method is used to model flexibilities. The structural data may be obtained from experimental, finite element, or analytical methods. Nonlinear flexibilities may be included in the model.

Fiber optic links for microwave/millimeter-wave systems

Recent advances in device technology for microwave/mm-wave (M/MMW) analog fiber-optic communication systems are surveyed, with discussion of system parameters, design optimization methods, and hardware selection and manufacturing considerations. Particular attention is given to 1-km-link systems operating at 21, 30, and 12 GHz for satellite-communication, electronic-warfare, and radar applications. The design and fabrication simplicity of direct modulation is weighed against the wide bandwidth, low distortion, and mm-wave and frequency operation advantages of external modulation. Homodyne or heterodyne coherent detection is shown to improve system S/N by 10-20 dB over conventional detection methods. Diagrams, drawings, photographs, and graphs of typical performance data are included.

He 2-104 - A link between symbiotic stars and planetary nebulae?

Ultraviolet, optical and infrared observations of He 2-104 are presented, and estimates for some of the physical properties of the nebular shell are made. It is argued that He 2-104 is in transition between the D-type symbiotic star and bipolar planetary nebula phases and, as such, represents a link between subclasses of these two types of objects. The model includes a binary system with a Mira variable and a hot, evolved star. Previous mass loss has resulted in the formation of a disk of gas and dust around the whole system, while the hot star has an accretion disk which produces the observed highly ionized emission line spectrum. Emission lines from cooler, lower density gas is also observed to come from the nebula. In addition, matter is flowing out of the system in a direction perpendicular to the disk with a high velocity and is impacting upon the previously-ejected red giant wind and/or the ambient interstellar medium.

On-line frequency domain information for control of a flexible-link robot with varying payload

Experimental results are given for the endpoint position control of a single-link, very flexible robot arm carrying an unknown, varying payload. The control objective is to maintain endpoint position accuracy in the presence of flexure effects after rapid movement due to a rigid body slew-angle commanded position. Fast, simple, and efficient frequency-domain schemes are used for online controller gain adjustment within an effective scheduling framework. Only endpoint acceleration and motor shaft angle measurements are utilized in relatively simple control laws where the appropriate gains have been scheduled as correlated to modal frequency information corresponding to a varying, unknown payload.

Nonlinear analysis of compressively loaded linked-plate structures

A method is presented for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of the equilibrium behavior of a general class of compressively loaded, prismatic, linked-plate structures. The semi-analytical method accounts for geometric shape imperfections, and allows the use of laminated composite plate properties. Buckling eigenfunctions are used as displacement shape functions, and the associated second-order displacement fields are incorporated. The nonlinear plate equilibrium equations are expressed in terms of the assumed displacement form, and the Galerkin method is used to obtain a set of algebraic equations which are nonlinear in the modal amplitudes and the load parameter. Buckling eigensolutions for the class of structures under consideration can be obtained from the VIPASA computer code; thus, subject to some additional restrictions in loading and plate anisotropy, structural configurations which can be analyzed with regard to buckling response by VIPASA can be analyzed with regard to geometrically nonlinear response using the new method.

NASA/GSFC program in direct detection optical communications for intersatellite links

NASA-Goddard has undertaken the development of direct-detection optical communications for space applications at the Gbps data rate channel capability level. The primary challenges to optical communications designers lie in the development of reliable optical power sources, as well as of high performance pointing/acquisition/tracking systems required by the narrow widths of the transmitted optical beams. GaAlAs diodes and their arrays are currently the most attractive technology for optical transmitters; pioneering work has also been conducted on dichroic and grating techniques for combining the power of several laser diodes. Attention is given to the performance obtained for an optical link acquisition and submicroradian tracking/pointing system.

Performance testing of a high frequency link converter for Space Station power distribution system

The testing of a brassboard version of a 20-kHz high-frequency ac voltage link prototype converter dynamics for Space Station application is presented. The converter is based on a three-phase six-pulse bridge concept. The testing includes details of the operation of the converter when it is driving an induction machine source/load. By adapting a field orientation controller (FOC) to the converter, four-quadrant operation of the induction machine from the converter has been achieved. Circuit modifications carried out to improve the performance of the converter are described. The performance of two 400-Hz induction machines powered by the converter with simple V/f regulation mode is reported. The testing and performance results for the converter utilizing the FOC, which provides the capability for rapid torque changes, speed reversal, and four-quadrant operation, are reported.

Linking consistency with object/thread semantics - An approach to robust computation

This paper presents an object/thread based paradigm that links data consistency with object/thread semantics. The paradigm can be used to achieve a wide range of consistency semantics from strict atomic transactions to standard process semantics. The paradigm supports three types of data consistency. Object programmers indicate the type of consistency desired on a per-operation basis and the system performs automatic concurrency control and recovery management to ensure that those consistency requirements are met. This allows programmers to customize consistency and recovery on a per-application basis without having to supply complicated, custom recovery management schemes. The paradigm allows robust and nonrobust computation to operate concurrently on the same data in a well defined manner. The operating system needs to support only one vehicle of computation - the thread.

Ku-band interferences for the Space Station multiple access link

The multiple access (MA) system, an essential part of the United States Space Station, will be used to provide simultaneous communication services, voice and command, telemetry and video, between the Space Station and all the different coorbiting user vehicles. The system is designed to operate in the Ku-band frequencies between 14 GHz and 14.89 GHz. Within this band, there are other users that could pose serious interference potential. The extent of the interference and its impact on the system operations are analyzed using a Monte Carlo simulation. Worst-case analysis indicated that certain links are very susceptible to interference. Mitigation techniques involving both hardware changes and operation constraints are presented. With the modification of some of the design and implementation of some of the mitigation techniques, the interference levels were found to be only a few percent and to occur in a burst manner.

Diplex Fiber-Optic Link For Frequency And Time Signals

Diplex fiber-optic link part of Goldstone Deep Space Communications complex. Relatively inexpensive equipment delivers signals of high quality. At central station, signal combiner adds 5-MHz reference-frequency signal and 36-bit time-code signal, forming composite signal, which modulates light transmitted along optical fiber. At remote station, fiber-optic receiver detects composite signal and provides input to diplexer, which separates frequency reference signal from time-code signal. Signals then amplified to desired levels.

Exact and explicit optimal solutions for trajectory planning and control of single-link flexible-joint manipulators

An optimal trajectory planning problem for a single-link, flexible joint manipulator is studied. A global feedback-linearization is first applied to formulate the nonlinear inequality-constrained optimization problem in a suitable way. Then, an exact and explicit structural formula for the optimal solution of the problem is derived and the solution is shown to be unique. It turns out that the optimal trajectory planning and control can be done off-line, so that the proposed method is applicable to both theoretical analysis and real time tele-robotics control engineering.

Space Communications Artificial Intelligence for Link Evaluation Terminal (SCAILET)

A software application to assis end-users of the Link Evaluation Terminal (LET) for satellite communication is being developed. This software application incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and will be deployed as an interface to LET. The high burst rate (HBR) LET provides 30 GHz transmitting/20 GHz receiving, 220/110 Mbps capability for wideband communications technology experiments with the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). The HBR LET and ACTS are being developed at the NASA Lewis Research Center. The HBR LET can monitor and evaluate the integrity of the HBR communications uplink and downlink to the ACTS satellite. The uplink HBR transmission is performed by bursting the bit-pattern as a modulated signal to the satellite. By comparing the transmitted bit pattern with the received bit pattern, HBR LET can determine the bit error rate BER) under various atmospheric conditions. An algorithm for power augmentation is applied to enhance the system's BER performance at reduced signal strength caused by adverse conditions. Programming scripts, defined by the design engineer, set up the HBR LET terminal by programming subsystem devices through IEEE488 interfaces. However, the scripts are difficult to use, require a steep learning curve, are cryptic, and are hard to maintain. The combination of the learning curve and the complexities involved with editing the script files may discourage end-users from utilizing the full capabilities of the HBR LET system. An intelligent assistant component of SCAILET that addresses critical end-user needs in the programming of the HBR LET system as anticipated by its developers is described. A close look is taken at the various steps involved in writing ECM software for a C&P, computer and at how the intelligent assistant improves the HBR LET system and enhances the end-user's ability to perform the experiments.

Compositions of large metal nodules in mesosiderites - Links to iron meteorite group IIIAB and the origin of mesosiderite subgroups

The compositions of large metal nodules in 12 mesosiderites, ranging from 3 mm to 4 cm in minimum dimensions and from 10 to 200 mg/g in silicate content, were analyzed by neutron activation; also analyzed were two additional samples (Pennyweight Point and Murchison Downs) which were originally designated iron meteorites but were later classified as Mes nodules. It was found that mesosiderites subgroups classified on the basis of metal composition are virtually the same as those based on silicate composition. The general covariation of the silicate and the metal compositional characteristics suggests that these features were established in the same process or in linked processes. A mesosiderite formation model is proposed.
