Limiting Rotation Rate of Neutron Stars from Crust Breaking and Gravitational Waves

Abstract Neutron stars are not observed to spin faster than about half their breakup rate. This limiting rotational frequency may be related to the strength of their crusts. As a star spins up from accretion, centrifugal forces stress the crust. We perform finite-element simulations of rotating neutron stars and find that the crust fails at rotation rates about half the breakup rate. Given uncertainties in microphysics, we have not determined the crust configuration after this failure. Instead, we argue that the crust may fail in an asymmetric way and could produce a configuration with a significant ellipticity (fractional difference in moments of inertia). If the ellipticity is large, a rotating star will radiate gravitational waves that may limit further spin-up. These stars may be promising sources for LIGO/VIRGO and next-generation gravitational-wave detectors.

T-handle wrench has torque-limiting action

T-handle wrench can be preset to release when a certain torque value is exceeded by means of a spring-loaded roller and groove torque-limiting mechanism contained in the handle of the wrench. The wrench is also equipped with a push button in the handle that permits the operator to lock the handle to the spindle shaft, thus eliminating the torque-limiting function.

Combustion Limits and Efficiency of Turbojet Engines

Combustion must be maintained in the turbojet-engine combustor over a wide range of operating conditions resulting from variations in required engine thrust, flight altitude, and flight speed. Furthermore, combustion must be efficient in order to provide the maximum aircraft range. Thus, two major performance criteria of the turbojet-engine combustor are (1) operatable range, or combustion limits, and (2) combustion efficiency. Several fundamental requirements for efficient, high-speed combustion are evident from the discussions presented in chapters III to V. The fuel-air ratio and pressure in the burning zone must lie within specific limits of flammability (fig. 111-16(b)) in order to have the mixture ignite and burn satisfactorily. Increases in mixture temperature will favor the flammability characteristics (ch. III). A second requirement in maintaining a stable flame -is that low local flow velocities exist in the combustion zone (ch. VI). Finally, even with these requirements satisfied, a flame needs a certain minimum space in which to release a desired amount of heat, the necessary space increasing with a decrease in pressure (ref. 1). It is apparent, then, that combustor design and operation must provide for (1) proper control of vapor fuel-air ratios in the combustion zone at or near stoichiometric, (2) mixture pressures above the minimum flammability pressures, (3) low flow velocities in the combustion zone, and (4) adequate space for the flame.

Circuitry selectively limits data storage in general purpose computer

Circuitry limits storage in the memory of a stored program general purpose digital computer by permitting storage or writing to certain, specified areas of memory. The limit register used in the computer is easily set under program control, and the memory block size and position is readily changed to suit each specific program.

Hydraulic actuator motion limiter ensures operator safety

Device regulates action of hydraulic linkage to control column to minimize hazard to operator. Primary components of device are flow rate control valve, limiter accumulator, and shutoff valve. Limiter may be incorporated into other hydraulic systems to prevent undue wear on hydraulic actuators and associated components.

Effect of several porous casing treatments on stall limit and on overall performance of an axial flow compressor rotor

Several geometrically different porous casings were tested with an axial-flow compressor rotor to determine their effects upon the rotor stall-limit line and overall performance. The tests were conducted using both uniform and nonuniform inlet-flow conditions. The rotor performance with the various casing treatments is compared with that obtained with a solid casing. The ability of the various casing treatments to displace the rotor stall-limit line to lower weight flows was observed. Significant stall-margin increases were obtained with several of the porous casings. Peak efficiencies with two of the porous casings were as high as or slightly higher than that obtained with solid casing.

Fundamental limitations on V/STOL terminal guidance due to aircraft characteristics

A review is given of limitations on approach flight paths of V/STOL aircraft, including limits on descent angle due to maximum drag/lift ratio. A method of calculating maximum drag/lift ratio of tilt-wing and deflected slipstream aircraft is presented. Derivatives and transfer functions for the CL-84 tilt-wing and X-22A tilt-duct aircraft are presented. For the unaugmented CL-84 in steep descents the transfer function relating descent angle to thrust contains a right-half plane zero. Using optimal control theory, it is shown that this zero causes a serious degradation in the accuracy with which steep flight paths can be followed in the presence of gusts.
