Investigation and Demonstration of Reliability Target Allocation to Support Reliability and Integrity Management Program

Nuclear energy is the most reliable and environmentally sustainable energy source available today. In the United States (U.S.), nuclear-generated power accounts for approximately 20% of total electricity and over 55% of clean energy. New advanced reactors have enormous potential to help further decarbonize the energy market, enhance grid resiliency, create new jobs, and build a stronger economy. More than 50 new reactors are being developed in the U.S., and the federal government realizes an urgent need to deploy nuclear technologies to meet the country’s energy, environmental, and national security goals. As such, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched multiple programs to support advanced reactor deployment. The research described in this report explores implementation strategies for the Reliability and Integrity Management Program that directly supports the DOE goal to enable the near-term deployment of the advanced reactor technologies. The project is conducted under the Regulatory Development Program for advanced reactors sponsored by the DOE.

Recommended Functionalities for Improving Cybersecurity of Distributed Energy Resources: Preprint

The legacy electric grid is transitioning into a 'present' modern grid due to increasing penetration of intermittent renewable generation at the distribution side, also known as distributed energy resources (DERs). Monitoring and control of such DERs requires extensive data-exchange and bidirectional communication networks. This bidirectional communication paves the way to cyber vulnerabilities and risks for new kinds of cyber-attacks that may have destructive impacts on power system operations. Since IEEE Std. 1547-2018 does not discuss cybersecurity measures for DERs, cybersecurity controls should be developed for securing DER systems at all three levels: device level, communications level, and applications level. This paper discusses the current industry's best practices related to DER cybersecurity and proposes recommended functionalities for improving the cybersecurity posture of DERs. These practical recommended functionalities have been discussed and verified with the industry through a DER cybersecurity working group and are meant to improve the device level security of DERs.

A Transactive Approach for Service Restoration Utilizing Customer Load Flexibility and Grid-Edge Resources

This paper develops a transactive energy system model to restore electricity to customers in an isolated distribution system after an outage. The model is developed to engage a variety of customer types - prosumers, flexible loads, critical/noncritical customers, and distributed generators - as active participants in the restoration process. Unlike many existing transactive approaches, the proposed model is developed for service restoration and accounts for various customer types and their autonomy and privacy through an iterative approach to determine the optimal market price, while maintaining systemlevel power flow and voltage constraints. The advantages of the proposed approach are numerically validated on a modified IEEE 123-bus test system.

Importance of nonuniform Brillouin zone sampling for ab initio Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations of exciton binding energies in crystalline solids

Excitons are prevalent in semiconductors and insulators, and their binding energies are critical for optoelectronic applications. The state-of-the-art method for first-principles calculations of excitons in extended systems is the ab initio GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach, which can require a fine sampling of reciprocal space to accurately resolve solid-state exciton properties. Here, in this study, we show, for a range of semiconductors and insulators, that the commonly employed approach of uniformly sampling the Brillouin zone can lead to underconverged exciton binding energies, as impractical grid sizes are required to achieve adequate convergence. We further show that nonuniform sampling of the Brillouin zone, focused on the region of reciprocal space where the exciton wave function resides, enables efficient rapid numerical convergence of exciton binding energies at a given level of theory. We propose a well-defined convergence procedure, which can be carried out at relatively low computational cost and which in some cases leads to a correction of previous best theoretical estimates by almost a factor of 2, qualitatively changing the predicted exciton physics. These results call for the adoption of nonuniform sampling methods for ab initio GW-BSE calculations and for revisiting previously computed values for exciton binding energies of many systems.

Expanding Solar Research and Generation for a Bright Energy Future (Final Technical Report)

This project supported the construction of an outdoor solar research facility for the primary purpose of characterizing panel and system lifetimes in the northern New England climate which features cold winters and warm, humid summers. The facility is designed to be integrated into future efforts to explore the impacts of the New England climate on energy storage and grid integration, as well as methods to mitigate factors like snow and dust coverage in the industrial and agricultural environment of the Intervale farming community and the McNeil wood-fired power generating station. It will provide year-round renewable energy research opportunities for faculty and students. As renewable energy generation and storage have become research priorities for UVM, for the state of Vermont, and for the United States as a whole, this facility will benefit the public on a broad range of scales.

Building and grid system benefits of demand flexibility and energy efficiency

The global electricity system is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Technology advancements in clean energy generation (e.g., solar photovoltaics and wind) and electrified demand (e.g., transportation and building heating) are providing a cost-competitive pathway to mitigate the urgent and severe consequences associated with a changing climate. In addition, as extreme events continue to increase in frequency and magnitude, solutions are needed for adapting to the current climate. Through energy efficiency and demand flexibility, buildings play a prominent role in meeting these challenges; recently in Joule, a paper by Langevin et al. provides clear insight into the magnitude of buildings’ technical potential.

LDES-Sizing-and-siting-model (Power grid test cases for long-duration energy storage (LDES) siting) [SWR-25-75]

This repository contains code and data for performing a siting analysis of long-duration energy storage (LDES) in the 5-bus and RTS systems using the Sienna suite developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for production cost modeling (PCM). This analysis involves moving the LDES component to different buses in the system, running a simulation, and considering the production cost of the simulation. Different system configurations are also analyzed with these scripts (such as moving load or renewable dispatch generators to different buses) to observe the impacts the system configuration has on optimal siting. This repository contains three sub directories discussed below. Both the 5-bus and RTS systems have two different initial configurations for the renewable energy components in them, one that is predominantly PV-driven and one that is predominantly wind-driven. Sienna suite can be found here: https://github.com/NREL-Sienna

Utilities' Role in Major Grid Disruptions [Slides]

The Energy to Communities (E2C) peer-learning cohort program provides technical assistance to groups of 15 community entities around a common energy topic over the course of 6 months. Every month, participants join a virtual meeting where they hear from experts and exchange strategies and best practices with their peers. This cohort, "Planning for Major Energy Disruptions in the Southeast" focuses on strategies for entities in the Southeast to quickly recover from impacts to energy infrastructure caused by extreme events, such as severe weather and natural disasters. This presentation focuses on the role of utilities in preparing for and responding to major energy disruptions. The workshop is on April 23, 2026.
