Charging infrastructure access and operation to reduce the grid impacts of deep electric vehicle adoption

Electric vehicles will contribute to emissions reductions in the United States, but their charging may challenge electricity grid operations. We present a data-driven, realistic model of charging demand that captures the diverse charging behaviours of future adopters in the US Western Interconnection. We study charging control and infrastructure build-out as critical factors shaping charging load and evaluate grid impact under rapid electric vehicle adoption with a detailed economic dispatch model of 2035 generation. We find that peak net electricity demand increases by up to 25% with forecast adoption and by 50% in a stress test with full electrification. Locally optimized controls and high home charging can strain the grid. Shifting instead to uncontrolled, daytime charging can reduce storage requirements, excess non-fossil fuel generation, ramping and emissions. Our results urge policymakers to reflect generation-level impacts in utility rates and deploy charging infrastructure that promotes a shift from home to daytime charging.

A Flux Balancing Strategy for 10-kV SiC-Based Dual-Active-Bridge Converter

The transformer flux unbalance in dual-active-bridge (DAB) converters is a critical issue due to the electrical parameter and modulation mismatch, and load or control transients. Compared to low voltage DAB converters, the unbalance problem in medium voltage DAB converters may cause more severe problem, and become more difficult to deal with, because of the high operating voltage and insulation requirement. In this paper, a flux balancing strategy for a medium voltage (MV) DAB converter is proposed, including the transformer design with ferrite gap, current harmonic-based unbalance detection, as well as the flux balancing control scheme. With the proposed ferrite gap, nonlinear magnetizing current and its modeling are induced. Then, by analyzing the current harmonics, the flux unbalance level can be detected, and hence controlled. Test results have verified the proposed method in a MV DAB converter.

Charger Requirements for GSE at Each Airport

This dataset contains the required number of chargers for GSE at each airport under six charging scenarios: (1) charging when the battery state of charge is insufficient for the next service using 40-kW chargers (S1); (2) charging when the battery state of charge is insufficient for the next service using 20-kW chargers (S2); (3) charging starts immediately after each GSE completes a service task using 40-kW chargers (S3); (4) charging starts immediately after each GSE completes a service task using 20-kW chargers (S4); (5) charging during off-peak hours using 40-kW chargers (S5); and (6) charging during off-peak hours using 20-kW chargers (S6).
