Intense Equatorial Electrojet and Counter Electrojet caused by the 15 January 2022 Tonga Volcanic Eruption: Space and Ground-based Observations

Abstract Text: We present space and ground-based multi-instrument observations demonstrating the impact of the 2022 Tonga volcanic eruption on dayside equatorial electrodynamics. A strong counter electrojet (CEJ) was observed by Swarm and ground-based magnetometers on 15 January after the Tonga eruption and during the recovery phase of a moderate geomagnetic storm. Swarm also observed an enhanced equatorial electrojet (EEJ) preceding the CEJ in the previous orbit. The observed EEJ and CEJ exhibited complex spatiotemporal variations. We combine them with the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) neutral wind measurements to disentangle the potential mechanisms. Our analysis indicates that the geomagnetic storm had minimal impact; instead, a large-scale atmospheric disturbance propagating eastward from the Tonga eruption site was the most likely driver for the observed intensification and directional reversal of the equatorial electrojet. The CEJ was associated with strong eastward zonal winds in the E-region ionosphere, as a direct response to the lower atmosphere forcing. Plain-Language Summary: The Earth's E-region ionosphere (~100-150 km altitude) consists of both ionized and neutral gasses, and the two components are coupled through ion-neutral collisions. The state of this region is closely influenced by neutral atmospheric activities from the lower atmosphere and the variability of the solar drivers. On 15 January 2022, the Tonga volcano had a massive eruption and injected an enormous amount of mass and energy into the atmosphere causing disturbances in the E-region ionosphere or even higher. There was also a moderate geomagnetic storm that started one day before the eruption and ended days after. These conditions offer a unique opportunity to understand the different roles they play in controlling the ionosphere. Coordinated observations including the atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere were made from both space and on the ground during this event. We analyzed the magnetic field and neutral wind data and found that a large-scale atmospheric disturbance generated by the volcano eruption was responsible for the observed directional reversal of the dayside equatorial electric field and electric current.

Stress-Activated Positive Holes (O− in a Matrix of O2–) Cause DNA Damage in Surface-Dwelling Organisms: Unveiling Mutation-Induced Secrets of Nature

Peroxy defects consist of pairs of tightly bonded oxygen anions in the –1 valence state such as in O3X/OO\YO3 with X, Y = Si4+, Al3+ etc. They commonly occur in igneous, metamorphic and many sedimentary rocks. When such rocks are stressed by tectonic forces, peroxy defects break up, releasing highly mobile electronic charge carriers: defect electrons in the O2– sublattice, i.e. unbound O–, known as “positive holes”, h•. The h• can flow out of stressed rock volumes, spreading far and wide, causing electric currents and electrochemical reactions. This study explores how the h• impact the electron flow in the electron transport chain (ETC) of organisms on the surface of rocks such as gabbro and granite. We found that, by forming hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anions, the h• disrupt the in vivo coordination of reduction-oxidation reactions that are essential for the timing of the redox cycle. Our observations show that stress activation of h• delays the sprouting of certain plant seeds and impedes the growth of yeast cultures, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The h• induce mutations and affect plant development as evidenced by reduced stem length and leaf size. At the same time, the h• serve as a source of abiotic oxidation, capable of forming various organic compounds in situ. Through the generation of radical species that create new carbon-carbon bonds the h• facilitate the abiotic synthesis of hydrocarbons and other organic molecules essential to life, including porphyrins. Our findings highlight the intricate interplay between positive holes, redox timing, and biological processes, revealing their significant role in influencing the growth and development of organisms in tectonically stressed crustal environments. Understanding these effects enhances our broader comprehension of redox biology and the influence of environmental factors on cellular development in natural settings.

Electrocatalysts, and fuel cells containing them

Provided are electrocatalysts, fuel cells, methods of making fuel cells, and methods of generating an electric current, each featuring a platinum (Pt)-containing substrate in contact with an aqueous solution comprising Pb2+. Electrocatalysts of the invention are formed via underpotential deposition (UPD) when a trace amount of Pb2+ is present in the electrolyte of a half anodic cell for oxidizing formic acid using Pt as the anode. Surprisingly, the UPD process dramatically enhances the activity of formic acid oxidation, at least as much as 10-fold compared with palladium (Pd) black. In an embodiment, the electrocatalyst comprises a Pt-containing substrate, a submonolayer of lead (Pb) adsorbed onto the Pt-containing substrate, and an aqueous solution comprising Pb2+, wherein the concentration of Pb2+ in the aqueous solution is 10 to 500 μm.

Interdigitated power connector

An electrical connector carries large amounts of electrical current between two circuit boards with low resistance and low self-inductance by means of an interdigitated anode and cathode, thereby providing low dynamic voltage loss. The connector also may include, near where power will be consumed, an interposer board with on-board capacitance to provide even lower dynamic voltage loss. The connector has application to delivering low-voltage, high-current power from a power supply on a first board to electronics on a second board: the low resistance provides low voltage drop for a load current that is constant, while the low inductance and the capacitors provide low voltage fluctuation for a load current that changes. These issues are of great importance, for example, in designing high-performance computers.

Thermoelectric coatings for waste heat recovery and photo-thermal power

An energy harvesting system for collecting energy from sources of thermal energy that exist in the environment and convert the energy to electricity. The system has N-P junctions mounted on the outer surface of a conduit, pipe or flue. A hot medium flows through the conduit, pipe or flue. The p-n junctions operate as thermoelectric power generators. Heat absorbed at the p-n junctions increases the kinetic energy of charge carriers causing migration of the charge carriers. This thermally-driven migration of charge carriers is used to drive an electrical current in an external circuit.

Characterization of Interconnects

Combined-accelerated stress testing (C-AST) simultaneously combines stress factors of the natural environment (including UV radiation, temperature, humidity, electrical current, and external mechanical force) into a single test that requires fewer modules, fewer chambers, and makes it possible to discover weaknesses in new designs that are not known a-priori. C-AST reduces risk, accelerates time to market, and improves bankability by reducing costly overdesign using test levels not exceeding those seen in the natural environment. This project seeks to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of modern cell interconnect designs with combined-accelerated stress testing (C-AST) to screen multiple climates along with finite element and failure analysis to determine the potential for a 50-year life. Supporting this, we seek to develop methods of characterization to assess the degradation of interconnects, enable predictive rate models with material forensics and FEA and show C-AST's ability to find interconnect failures and benchmark it relative to other accelerated stress test methods like temperature cycling and cyclic dynamic mechanical loading. Examples of modern interconnect designs covered are Canadian Solar Hetero Technology ribbon enabling closer cell interconnections, SmartWire (eg. Meyer-Berger technology), and shingled cells with new interconnect materials.
