Development of a systems theoretical procedure for evaluation of the work organization of the cockpit crew of a civil transport airplane

To achieve optimum design for the man machine interface with aircraft, a description of the interaction and work organization of the cockpit crew is needed. The development of system procedure to evaluate the work organization of pilots while structuring the work process is examined. Statistical data are needed to simulate sequences of pilot actions on the computer. Investigations of computer simulation and applicability for evaluation of crew concepts are discussed.

Active control of robot manipulator compliance

Work performed at Catholic University on the research grant entitled Active Control of Robot Manipulator Compliance, supported by NASA/Goddard space Flight Center during the period of May 15th, 1986 to November 15th, 1986 is described. The modelling of the two-degree-of-freedom robot is first presented. Then the complete system including the robot and the hybrid controller is simulated on an IBM-XT Personal Computer. Simulation results showed that proper adjustments of controller gains enable the robot to perform successful operations. Further research should focus on developing a guideline for the controller gain design to achieve system stability.

Estimating short-period dynamics using an extended Kalman filter

An extended Kalman filter is used to estimate the parameters of a low-order model from aircraft transient response data. The low-order model is a state-space model derived from the short-period approximation of the longitudinal aircraft dynamics. The model corresponds to the pitch rate to stick force transfer function currently used in flying qualities analysis. The parameters are estimated from flight data as well as from a 6-DOF nonlinear simulation of the aircraft. These two estimates are then compared, and the discrepancies noted. The low-order model is able to satisfactorily match both flight data and simulation data from a high-order computer simulation.

Numerical propulsion system simulation: An interdisciplinary approach

The tremendous progress being made in computational engineering and the rapid growth in computing power that is resulting from parallel processing now make it feasible to consider the use of computer simulations to gain insights into the complex interactions in aerospace propulsion systems and to evaluate new concepts early in the design process before a commitment to hardware is made. Described here is a NASA initiative to develop a Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) capability.

The use of linked lists in the simulation of controller-structure interaction

An algorithm for the computer simulation of large space structures under active control is considered. Linked lists are used in a matrix data structure to implement the trapezoidal rule on system differential equations. The use of the trapezoidal rule ensures that the numerical stability is equivalent to the system stability, which is essential for this type of simulation. The sparsity of the system matrices is exploited by the linked lists, and the algorithm efficiently steps through the lists in an orderly fashion. Results of simulations on a NASA large space structure experiment are reported.

Initial Development of a Quadcopter Simulation Environment for Auralization

This paper describes a recently created computer simulation of quadcopter flight dynamics for the NASA DELIVER project. The goal of this effort is to produce a simulation that includes a number of physical effects that are not usually found in other dynamics simulations (e.g., those used for flight controller development). These effects will be shown to have a significant impact on the fidelity of auralizations - entirely synthetic time-domain predictions of sound - based on this simulation when compared to a recording. High-fidelity auralizations are an important precursor to human subject tests that seek to understand the impact of vehicle configurations on noise and annoyance.

Space-Based Relay Simulations

This report displays field-of-view studies through computer simulation using the Analytical Graphics, Inc., Systems Tool Kit® (STK®). This task analyzes the potential performance for a variety of circular low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites and some relative to various user-mission orbits communicating with geosynchronous-Earth-orbit (GEO) satellites. We further investigate relative data volumes taking into account the varying satellite distances with an omnidirectional user antenna.

A Brief Review of Equivalent Available Pressure Measurement and Purpose

This presentation is intended as a lead to a workshop on the subject of Equivalent Available Pressure (EAP). EAP is a concept that has been introduced to the Pressure Gain Combustion (PGC) community in recent years. It is a technique for determining an equivalent steady state figure of merit from the fundamentally unsteady PGC process. The workshop is centered on reviewing the efforts by various organizations to implement the EAP technique specifically on rotating detonation engines (RDE's). RDE's are a type of PGC device. This presentation is a very brief (15 minute) review of the EAP technique for both computational simulations and laboratory experiments. The mathematical equations required to compute EAP are shown and an example RDE simulation is presented showing results.

Theoretical magnetograms based on quantitative simulation of a magnetospheric substorm

Substorm currents derived from the Rice University computer simulation of the September 19, 1976 substorm event are used to compute theoretical magnetograms as a function of universal time for various stations, integrating the Biot-Savart law over a maze of about 2700 wires and bands that carry the ring, Birkeland and horizontal ionospheric currents. A comparison of theoretical results with corresponding observations leads to a claim of general agreement, especially for stations at high and middle magnetic latitudes. Model results suggest that the ground magnetic field perturbations arise from complicated combinations of different kinds of currents, and that magnetic field disturbances due to different but related currents cancel each other out despite the inapplicability of Fukushima's (1973) theorem. It is also found that the dawn-dusk asymmetry in the horizontal magnetic field disturbance component at low latitudes is due to a net downward Birkeland current at noon, a net upward current at midnight, and, generally, antisunward-flowing electrojets.

Advanced ETC/LSS computerized analytical models, CO2 concentration. Volume 1: Summary document

Computer simulations have been prepared for the concepts of C02 concentration which have the potential for maintaining a C02 partial pressure of 3.0 mmHg, or less, in a spacecraft environment. The simulations were performed using the G-189A Generalized Environmental Control computer program. In preparing the simulations, new subroutines to model the principal functional components for each concept were prepared and integrated into the existing program. Sample problems were run to demonstrate the methods of simulation and performance characteristics of the individual concepts. Comparison runs for each concept can be made for parametric values of cabin pressure, crew size, cabin air dry and wet bulb temperatures, and mission duration.

Dynamic modeling and simulation of planetary rovers

This paper documents a preliminary study into the dynamic modeling and computer simulation of wheeled surface vehicles. The research centered on the feasibility of using commercially available multibody dynamics codes running on engineering workstations to perform the analysis. The results indicated that physically representative vehicle mechanics can be modeled and simulated in state-of-the-art Computer Aided Engineering environments, but at excessive cost in modeling and computation time. The results lead to the recommendation for the development of an efficient rover mobility-specific software system. This system would be used for vehicle design and simulation in planetary environments; controls prototyping, design, and testing; as well as local navigation simulation and expectation planning.

Numerical propulsion system simulation

The cost of implementing new technology in aerospace propulsion systems is becoming prohibitively expensive. One of the major contributors to the high cost is the need to perform many large scale system tests. Extensive testing is used to capture the complex interactions among the multiple disciplines and the multiple components inherent in complex systems. The objective of the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) is to provide insight into these complex interactions through computational simulations. This will allow for comprehensive evaluation of new concepts early in the design phase before a commitment to hardware is made. It will also allow for rapid assessment of field-related problems, particularly in cases where operational problems were encountered during conditions that would be difficult to simulate experimentally. The tremendous progress taking place in computational engineering and the rapid increase in computing power expected through parallel processing make this concept feasible within the near future. However it is critical that the framework for such simulations be put in place now to serve as a focal point for the continued developments in computational engineering and computing hardware and software. The NPSS concept which is described below will provide that framework.

An Unipolar Terminal-Attractor Based Neural Associative Memory with Adaptive Threshold and Perfect Convergence

For the first time, a unipolar terminal-attractor based neural associative memory (TABAM)system with adaptive threshold and perfect convergence is presented. By adaptively setting thethreshold values for the dynamic iteration for the unipolar binary neuron states with terminal-attractors and inner-product approach, we demonstrate via computer simulation the achievement ofperfect convergence and correct retrieval. The simulation is completed with a small number of storedstates (M) and a small number of neurons (N) but a large M/N ratio. An experiment with exclusive-or logic operation using LCTV SLMs is used to show feasibility of the optoelectronic implementationof the models.
