Dual-domain column experiment data for aquifer sediments from Riverton, WY, 2018, examining groundwater mobility and speciation of arsenic

This dataset is a compilation of the data that supported the publication of Kumar et al. (2020) in ES&T, http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.9b06502. The data is from a dual domain column experiment examining the impact of redox interfaces on arsenic speciation and mobility in natural groundwater sediments that were collected at the Riverton, WY, US Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management field site. The abstract for the associated publication reads:Groundwater contamination by As from natural and anthropogenic sources is a world-wide concern. Redox heterogeneities over space and time are common and can influence the molecular-level speciation of As, and thus As release/retention, but are largely unexplored. Here we present results from a dual-domain column experiment, with natural organic-rich, fine-grained, and sulfidic sediments embedded as lenses (referred to as ‘reducing lenses’) within natural aquifer sand. We show that redox interfaces in sulfur-rich, alkaline aquifers may release concerning levels of As, even when sediment As concentration is low (<2 mg/kg), due to the formation of mobile thioarsenates at aqueous sulfide:Fe molar ratios <1. In our experiments, this behavior occurred in the aquifer sand between reducing lenses and was attributed to the spreading of sulfidic conditions and subsequent Fe reductive dissolution. In contrast, inside reducing lenses (and some locations in the aquifer) the aqueous sulfide:Fe molar ratios exceeded 1 and aqueous sulfide:As molar ratios exceeded 100, which partitioned As(III)-S to the solid phase (associated with organics or as realgar (As4S4)). These results highlight the importance of thioarsenates in natural sediments and indicate that redox interfaces and sediment heterogeneities could locally degrade groundwater quality, even in aquifers with unconcerning solid phase As concentrations.

ESS-DIVE Reporting Format for Comma-separated Values (CSV) File Structure

The ESS-DIVE reporting format for Comma-separated Values (CSV) file structure is based on a combination of existing guidelines and recommendations including some found within the Earth Science Community with valuable input from the Environmental Systems Science (ESS) Community. The CSV reporting format is designed to promote interoperability and machine-readability of CSV data files while also facilitating the collection of some file-level metadata content. Tabular data in the form of rows and columns should be archived in its simplest form, and we recommend submitting these tabular data following the ESS-DIVE reporting format for generic comma-separated values (CSV) text format files. In general, the CSV file format is more likely accessible by future systems when compared to a proprietary format and CSV files are preferred because this format is easier to exchange between different programs increasing the interoperability of a data file. By defining the reporting format and providing guidelines for how to structure CSV files and some field content within, this can increase the machine-readability of the data file for extracting, compiling, and comparing the data across files and systems.Data package files are in .csv, .png, and .md. Open the .csv with e.g. Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice, or Google Sheets. Open the .md files by downloading and using a text editor (e.g., notepad or TextEdit). Open the .png in e.g. a web browser, photo viewer/editor, or Google Drive.

Carbon Organisms Rhizosphere and Protection in Soil Environment model script and input data for soil moisture-respiration responses in tropical forests

Objectives: Climatic drying is predicted for many tropical forests, yet models remain poorly parameterized for tropical forests, hampering predictions of forest-climate feedbacks. We applied an integrated model–experiment approach, parameterizing an ecosystem model Carbon Organisms Rhizosphere and Protection in the Soil Environment (CORPSE) with tropical forest observational data, and comparing model predictions with a field drying manipulation. We hypothesized that drying would suppress soil CO2 fluxes (i.e., respiration) in already-drier tropical forests, but increases CO2 fluxes in wetter tropical forests by alleviating anaerobiosis. We measured soil CO2 fluxes, soil moisture, soil temperature, and forest floor biomass during wet-dry cycles (2015 – 2022) in four Panamanian forests that vary in rainfall and soil fertility. We used the field data to parameterize and run tests in the model. Results: Measured CO2 fluxes declined in the dry season and peaked in the early wet season ahead of peak soil moisture, resulting in a lower soil moisture optimum for respiration than previously modeled. We used this data to parameterize the model, which then predicted increased soil CO2 fluxes in wetter and fertile forests with drying, and decreased fluxes in drier, infertile forests. In contrast to model predictions, a chronic throughfall exclusion experiment in the forests initially suppressed soil CO2 fluxes across forests, with sustained suppression after four years in the wettest forest only (-28 ± 4% during the dry season), but elevated soil CO2 fluxes in a fertile forest after four years (+75 ± 28% during the late wet season), as predicted by the model. The unexpected negative drying effect in the wettest, most infertile forest could have resulted from reduced vertical flushing of nutrients into soils. Including hydro-nutrient interactions in ecosystem models could improve predictions of tropical forest-climate feedbacks (results presented in Cusack et al. 2023). Data and scripts associated with a manuscript on a meta-analysis synthesizing stream biogeochemical response to wildfires across space and time (v2)

This data package is associated with the publication “Catchment characteristics modulate the influence of wildfires on nitrate and dissolved organic carbon in lotic systems across space and time: A meta-analysis” submitted to Global Biogeochemical Cycles (Cavaiani et al. 2025). This study uses meta-analytical techniques to evaluate the effect of wildfire on in-stream responses in burned and unburned watersheds. The study aims to provide additional insight into the range of responses and net influences that wildfires have on hydro-biogeochemistry across broad spatial scales, burn extents, and the persistence of water-quality change. This study compiles data and metadata from 18 total publications that includes 1) surface water geochemistry data (dissolved organic carbon; nitrate), 2) climate classifications, 3) year of the wildfire, 4) the time lag between when the fire occurred and when the sampling occurred, and 5) study design of the publication. In total, this meta-analysis draws data that spans 8 climate guilds, 3 biomes, 62 watersheds, and 20 unique wildfires. See Sites_meta_data.csv for citations of the papers used in this meta-analysis. All R scripts and the associated data can also be found on GitHub at This data package was originally published in March 2024. It was updated in April 2025 (v2; new and modified files).
