Paintable Reflective Coatings (CRADA Final Report)

As part of the Cyclotron Road LEEP, the Cypris Materials project team conducted research on the viability of a new reflective coating technology based on a novel advanced materials platform. Building off of nearly a decade of academic research spanning multiple institutions, research efforts were designed to tackle the familiar problem of maturing a project into a minimum viable product. Fundamental technologies spawned from academic research are fraught with both scientific and technical risk, as the barriers to a successful peer reviewed publication are much lower than a commercial product with a paying customer base. It is common, especially when maturing chemical or material innovations, to encounter a number of critical assumptions or features that support the performance of the technology in an unsustainable fashion. At the outset of the project, the platform technology of Cypris Materials was no different. Specific research thrusts regarding scale-up, process optimization, technoeconomic modeling, market specific weathering performance, and market specific optical performance were tackled during the CRADA project.

Functional Surface Coating to Enhance the Stability of LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2

Parasitic reactions are responsible for continuous performance loss during the normal operation and storage of lithium-ion batteries, particularly for those using nickel-rich cathode materials. Among many contributors, residual Li 2 CO 3 on the surface of nickel-rich cathodes plays a detrimental role in promoting parasitic reactions, and hence accelerates the performance loss of those cathode materials. In this work, a wet impregnation process was utilized to convert the detrimental Li 2 CO 3 and LiOH impurities into a beneficial functional surface coating comprising phosphates. Specifically, hydro-phosphates were used as the functional surface modification agents to mitigate the detrimental effect of surface residuals. The best electrochemical performance was achieved by modifying LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 with a diluted dihydro-phosphate solution (pKa = 7.2), while the metal cation had a negligible impact on the electrochemical performance. This work provides a cheap and simple method for enabling the high performance of nickel-rich cathodes.

Stability of Polyethylene Glycol-Coated Copper Nanoparticles and Their Optical Properties

Oxidation is a corrosion reaction where the corroded metal forms an oxide. Prevention of oxidation at the nanoscale is critically important to retain the physicochemical properties of metal nanoparticles. In this work, we studied the stability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated copper nanoparticles (PEGylated CuNPs) against oxidation. The freshly-prepared PEGylated CuNPs mainly consist of metallic Cu which are quite stable in air although their surfaces are typically covered with a few monolayers of cuprous oxide. However, they are quickly oxidized in water due to the presence of protons that facilitate oxidation of the cuprous oxide to cupric oxide. PEG with carboxylic acid terminus could slightly delay the oxidation process compared to that with thiol terminus. It was found that a solvent with reducing power such as ethanol could greatly enhance the stability of PEGylated CuNPs by preventing further oxidation of the cuprous oxide to cupric oxide and thus retain the optical properties of CuNPs. The reducing environment also assists the galvanic replacement of these PEGylated CuNPs to form hollow nanoshells; however, they consist of ultra-small particle assemblies due to the co-reduction of gold precursor during the replacement reaction. As a result, these nanoshells do not exhibit strong optical properties in the near-infrared region. This study highlights the importance of solvent effects on PEGylated nonprecious metal nanoparticles against oxidation corrosion and its applications in preserving physicochemical properties of metallic nanostructures.

Development of Gelatin-Coated Hydrogel Microspheres for Novel Bioink Design: A Crosslinker Study

The development of vascularized tissue is a substantial challenge within the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Studies have shown that positively-charged microspheres exhibit dual-functions: (1) facilitation of vascularization and (2) controlled release of bioactive compounds. In this study, gelatin-coated microspheres were produced and processed with either EDC or transglutaminase, two crosslinkers. The results indicated that the processing stages did not significantly impact the size of the microspheres. EDC and transglutaminase had different effects on surface morphology and microsphere stability in a simulated colonic environment. Incorporation of EGM and TGM into bioink did not negatively impact bioprintability (as indicated by density and kinematic viscosity), and the microspheres had a uniform distribution within the scaffold. These microspheres show great potential for tissue engineering applications.

Electrodes with Electrodeposited Water-excluding Polymer Coating Enable High-Voltage Aqueous Supercapacitors

Aqueous supercapacitors are powerful energy sources, but they are limited by energy density that is much lower than lithium-ion batteries. Since raising the voltage beyond the thermodynamic potential for water splitting (1.23 V) can boost the energy density, there has been much effort on water-stabilizing salvation additives such as Li 2 SO 4 that can provide an aqueous electrolyte capable of withstanding ~1.8 V. Guided by the first-principles calculations that reveal water can promote hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, here, we pursue a new strategy of covering the electrode with a dense electroplated polymerized polyacrylic acid, which is an electron insulator but a proton conductor and proton reservoir. The combined effect of salvation and coating expands the electrochemical window throughout pH 3 to pH 10 to 2.4 V for both fast and slow proton-mediated redox reactions. This allows activated carbon to quadruple the energy density, a kilogram of nitrogen-doped graphene to provide 127 Watt-hour, and both to have improved endurance because of suppression of water-mediated corrosion. Therefore, aqueous supercapacitors can now achieve energy densities quite comparable to that of a lithium-ion battery, but at 100 times the charging/discharging speed and cycle durability.

Electron Microscopic Examination of an Irradiated TRISO Coated Particle of AGR-2 Experiment: AGR2-222-RS019

The transmission electron microscopic (TEM) examination of an irradiated tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particle from advanced gas reactor (AGR) 2 fuel Compact 2-2-2 is presented in this report. Compact 2-2-2 refers to the compact in Capsule 2 at Level 2 of Stack 2. The examination on AGR2 222 RS019 is focused on the interface between the silicon carbide (SiC) to inner pyrolytic carbon (IPyC) layer, central part of SiC, and the interface between SiC and outer pyrolytic carbon layer. The SiC grain boundary distribution and associated fission product precipitates were characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and precession electron diffraction (PED) in the transmission electron microscope. Two separate locations on SiC layer were selected for on the basis of the intact of the buffer layer in the irradiated TRISO particle. The key observation in this particle is that the compositional nature of grain boundary precipitates is more complex near IPyC/SiC layer where Pd, Pd-Ag, Pd-U containing precipitates can be observed. However, the compositions of precipitate towards outer most region of SiC mainly contain Pd. Ag has been observed in the IPyC/SiC layer in one of the two locations. Comparison of the results to previously irradiated and analyzed, Variant 3, safety tested AGR-1 TRISO particles (AGR1-433-001 and AGR1 222-RS004) showed the grain boundary distributions have some noticeable differences. The differences in coincident site lattice grain boundary and misorientation angles are possibly inherent to the fabrication process. Neutron irradiation induced void distribution has been found to be nonuniform. A high concentration of smaller voids is found at stacking faults compared to those in the SiC matrix. Larger void sizes are observed in the SiC location that is near to the broken buffer layer. This void size variation with integrity of buffer layer can potentially affect the fission product retention. However, the average void size continuously decreases along the radius of SiC in both locations.

Pt Catalysts Modified with Manganese Oxide through Atomic Layer Deposition for CO Oxidation: Establishing a Coating Layer above or below Pt

The effect of atomic layer deposition (ALD) of manganese oxide on CO oxidation over Pt/Al2O3 is investigated. Two types of catalysts with a thin MnOx layer coated on or under the Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared, and a pristine Pt/Al2O3 catalyst is used as a reference sample. The addition of the ALD layers improves the catalyst durability and both catalysts with MnOx exhibit greater stability after thermal aging at 1073-K. Besides, MnOx promotes CO oxidation through active Pt-MnOx interfacial sites, showing a reaction rate up to 35-fold faster than that of unmodified Pt. Interestingly, the CO adsorption ability of the Pt catalysts with MnOx overcoats is greatly suppressed after the high-temperature calcination; however, the reaction rate of CO oxidation is still excellent. This phenomenon is because the uniformly covered MnOx with two atomic layers diminishes the exposed Pt surface, but the reaction near the Pt-MnOx interfacial site still occurs. Our results guide the effective use of ALD, which is actively applied to heterogeneous catalysis, and provide a novel direction to control metal-assisted interactions.
