Manufacturing of Complex Silicon–Carbon Structures: Exploring Si x C y Materials

This paper reports on the manufacturing of complex three-dimensional Si/C structures via a chemical vapor deposition method. The structure and properties of the grown materials were characterized using various techniques including scanning electron microscopy, aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, confocal Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectroscopy results revealed that the grown materials were composed of micro/nanostructures with various compositions and dimensions. These included two-dimensional silicon carbide (SiC), cubic silicon, and various SiC polytypes. The coexistence of these phases at the nano-level and their interfaces can benefit several Si/C-based applications ranging from ceramics and structural applications to power electronics, aerospace, and high-temperature applications. With an average density of 7 mg/cm 3 , the grown materials can be considered ultralightweight, as they are three orders of magnitude lighter than bulk Si/C materials. This study aims to impact how ceramic materials are manufactured, which may lead to the design of new carbide materials or Si/C-based lightweight structures with additional functionalities and desired properties.

Urban and regional planning proposal no. Y-10-066-001

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. A program has been completed to print out the radiance values for any specified combination of the four MSS bands for a specified sector of an image. A program to map intensities for any band is being written. An investigation of the characteristics of cities in the Brevard County area, as seen by ERTS-1, has been started. Investigation has not been completed, however, results initially obtained are presented. A Digicol viewer was used to determine the relative reflectance of cities (and other developed sectors) in the area. This was done by a combination of two methods: (1) varying the offset control so that the brightest spot appeared first, followed by the second brightest spot; and (2) reading the relative light transmissions at selected positions. A band 5 image was used and the results, in order of maximum reflectance apparent within the sector, are given.

Urban and regional planning proposal no. Y-10-066-001

The author has identified the following significant results. An investigation is underway to determine the applicability of ERTS-1 data to urban and regional planning problems, using data for East Central Florida. Small scale land use mapping is feasible. Urban and commercial areas are sufficiently distinguishable that ERTS-1 appears to be a useful tool for monitoring urban and commercial growth. Development patterns of cities, growth patterns of cities, and distribution and changes in certain sectors within cities can be analyzed effectively. Digital analysis methods are proving useful.

Physical and geological aspects of heiligenschein measurements, part Y

A preliminary attempt was made to evaluate the geological significance of the dispersion in the heiligenschein index. Heiligenschein coordinates were plotted on the 1:5,000,000 geologic map of the near side of the moon. The purpose was to evaluate the specific geologic unit involved in the case of each heiligenschein display. Tentative results that list the mean heiligenschein index and the rms deviation for each geologic map unit are given.

X-Y alphanumeric character generator for oscilloscopes

A method and apparatus is disclosed by which any general purpose external trigger laboratory oscilloscope can be utilized to display alphanumeric characters. Each character to be displayed is composed of a plurality of segments appearing at various segment positions in various segment rows to define a conventional matrix. In between character segments to be displayed, or when no display is desired, the trace is effectively blanked by a vertical clamping voltage so as to position the oscilloscope trace in an off-screen position. The clamping technique of the invention, i.e., biasing the oscilloscope trace to an off-screen position when no character segment is to be displayed; it eliminates the necessity of providing Z-axis modulation to effect blanking.

A B-B-G-K-Y framework for fluid turbulence

A kinetic theory for fluid turbulence is developed from the Liouville equation and the associated BBGKY hierarchy. Real and imaginary parts of Fourier coefficients of fluid variables play the roles of particles. Closure is achieved by the assumption of negligible five-coefficient correlation functions and probability distributions of Fourier coefficients are the basic variables of the theory. An additional approximation leads to a closed-moment description similar to the so-called eddy-damped Markovian approximation. A kinetic equation is derived for which conservation laws and an H-theorem can be rigorously established, the H-theorem implying relaxation of the absolute equilibrium of Kraichnan. The equation can be cast in the Fokker-Planck form, and relaxation times estimated from its friction and diffusion coefficients. An undetermined parameter in the theory is the free decay time for triplet correlations. Some attention is given to the inclusion of viscous damping and external driving forces.
