University of Alaska Fairbanks PhD Committee Meeting [Slides]

Topography is known to be a strong influence over local (< approx. 10 km) infrasound propagation. Recent work in the geometric acoustics approximation (Blom 2020) has shown topography to influence infrasound propagation over regional distances (100s of km). Previous work in the axisymmetric approximation (deGroot-Hedlin 2017) has shown topography to affect full-wave calculations out to 10s of km.

University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Final Scientific/Technical Report Small Scale Ammonia Synthesis Using Stranded Wind Energy

Ammonia absorber columns offer an alternative separation unit to replace condensation in the Haber-Bosch synthesis loop. Metal halide salts can selectively separate ammonia from the reactor outlet gas mixture and incorporate it into their crystal lattice with remarkably high thermodynamic capacity. While the salts’ working capacity can be limited and unstable when they are in their pure form, the capacity is stable and can be high when using a porous ceramic support. In this project, we found optimal conditions for sorbent fabrication, we demonstrated benchmark levels of uptake and release of ammonia, and we fabricated and demonstrated a prototype at a scale of 1 kg/day ammonia. This task allowed us to assess improvement in the techno-economic prospects for this new separation approach, making viable more distributed production of green ammonia from geographically dispersed renewable energy sources.

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between National Energy Technology Laboratory and The Pennsylvania State University (Final Report)

The goal of this research was to investigate the production of carbon products from methane using carbon allotrope seeds. If successful, this would have eliminated the need for a metal catalyst and separation of said catalyst from the carbon product. There was also interest in alternate energy input technologies that could drive this reaction, in particular microwave irradiation. NETL was to provide the expertise and facilities to investigate the potential of microwave irradiation to aid in the conversion process. Unfortunately, protocols put in place to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic precluded on-site research by PSU scientists and made it impossible to execute the research outlined in this CRADA.

Universal Monte Carlo Event Generator

With the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV physics program underway and plans for the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), the nuclear physics community is entering a new era of exploration of QCD phenomena involving extensive data taking and event-level processing. This brings with it the potential for unprecedented access to multidimensional particle momentum distributions (PMDs) that can be connected to various theoretical frameworks by unfolding the emergent quantum mechanical properties of QCD using the PMDs. In practice, the PMDs are rendered as discretized histograms (typically one- or two-dimensional projections), and detector effects must be taken into account to unfold the pure detector effect-free PMDs that can be connected with theory. One of the challenges in this new era is obtaining faithful reconstructions of the multidimensional PMDs that preserve all of the inherent particle correlations. In this LDRD project we developed a novel approach using machine learning (ML) that solves this challenge, by avoiding entirely the need to use histograms as the main numerical technique to obtain the detector effect-free PMDs. The new approach is, moreover, scalable to higher dimensional PMDs. The central idea involves training neural networks (NNs) to generate synthetic event-level data (momenta 4-vectors of final state particles) to preserve all correlations among the particles. This is achieved by converting the trial synthetic vertex-level events to detector-level events using detector simulators. The NNs are then tuned using a specialized distance metric between the synthetic detector events and the real detector events.

A publication proposal to the University of California

The purpose of this book is to profile, chapter by chapter, each of the 18 Nobel laureates who contributed to the laboratory’s wartime efforts. Through narrative, nonfiction profiles with fascinating historical photos and documents, readers will learn who these scientists were, what they accomplished, and why it mattered. The goal of this book is to educate readers by creating a published chronicle of this important history based on documents and photographs that are a part of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s National Security Research Center. These 18 scientists have two things in common: their wartime work at Los Alamos and their Nobel Prizes. For the first time ever, both are presented as one story.

University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) Design Demonstration Element End Fitting Structural Rigidity Analysis

The primary objective of this work is to assess the extent to which the stiffness (measured by means of maximum displacement) of the end fittings in the DDE contributes to the stiffness of the entire element, and how it compares to the equivalent stiffness of the end fittings in the LEU element. Structural analysis of both the LEU element and the DDE were performed using COMSOL 5.3a finite element software. Supporting combs are used on the leading and trailing edges of fuel plates for both the LEU element and the DDE. Therefore, simulations with and without combs are performed as two bounding boundary conditions on the leading edge of the fuel plates. Three types of loads are analyzed in this work: the hydraulic load due to the channel flow disparity-induced pressure differential, the thermal load due to the thermal expansion of the fuel plates, and a point load equal in magnitude to the LEU element’s weight.

A cross-frontier quest to reveal the origin of the Universe [Slides]

The Standard Model is one of the most well-tested theories in Particle Physics. The particle content was completed by the discovery of the Higgs boson. However, it does not explain the complete picture. This report discusses physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM Physics).

Establishment of an Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) site at Arizona State University (ASU)

In this document we report the overall accomplishments of the IAC site at ASU. The report is organized in three different areas: conduct industrial assessments; provide training, research, and educational opportunities to IAC students; and other activities. The report includes those assessments made between September 2016 to August 2021.
